Not that I care about the name, but Vermeer S is new to me, is it the official name? Just wondering if it indicates some kind of change, or if I've just been fed too many rumors.. :D

A lot of these rumors have so much BS that I just ignore everything till you can actually buy them!
Well one thing is for sure, AMD knows how keep a secret these days.

Fair enough, as I said no one person's idea of right is right for all though is it.

I wasn't pulling apart Intel's upgrade paths, though it may have looked it, I was tearing up ARFs, dead end platform comment for the rubbish it is.

I'm more of the gradual upgrade plan , given the chance, and to me using this old am4 platform for something, is better than fully swapping everything every two years.

And if I got Vermeer S on this crosshair impact I would not be that far away from the performance of any Intel part for another year, which sounds perfect for letting ddr5 mature.

My old parts tend to live on for at least four years somewhere.

I'm currently on a 3900XT that i got at boxing day because I couldn't get a ref priced 5900X. I also purchased 64gigs of ram 3200mhz. The last couple of years i got excited with AMD making big gains every génération. I was looking to get s 5900X as soon as the prices normalized ans now I'm glad i didn't. I'll grab the 5900X V cache cpu and ride off into the sunset with my platform at least for another 2-3 years. I hope AM5 has at least 3 generations in it as well. Intel needs to learn this , it's partially the reason 12th gen has slow sales.

Entry-level SKUs are really hard to find so this makes sense, AMD knows they'll have a market for whatever harvested SKU they can make. Just for comparison last year I built a rig based on an Athlon 3000G and it cost ~45€. Basically the cheapest SKU money could buy. This year the same processor is impossible to find for less than twice that price.

A random thought: why can't we get the 5300G instead of all this iGPU-free waste?

Because they're probably going directly in low(er) end notebooks.

Better margins & higher marketshare.

The 5300G is a desktop CPU for prebuilt machines.

It would cost AMD zero in terms of R&D to release it as a standalone DIY product. As far as I know, there is no explanation to why it hasn't happened, but we're gonna get some iGPU-free Ryzen 3, apparently.

They use the same chip for notebooks IIRC. Goes as Ryzen 3 5400U though I'm not sure if they're getting a lot of defective dies for the lower end APU's ~ the 5600G & lower are cut down 5700G parts.

Same for notebooks. Cut down 59xx chips there.

That might be the reason, but it's still sad. Also, the 5300G would be a great HTPC part while the 5600G and 5700G are both overpriced and overpowered for such purposes.

I'm not sure how big of a market the HTPC segment is, though.

VR HMD Samsung Oddyssey, not that I'd plug it into this though....

Benchmark Scores I once clocked a Celeron-300A to 564MHz on an Abit BE6 and it scored over 9000.

I'm sure I'm not in the minority in creating an HTPC from older parts after a main PC upgrade. New parts are only purchased for HTPCs if there's a specific need to do so to meet some other criteria like a specific form-factor or whatever.

Because HTPCs compute requirements are so low, there's rarely any need to invest in new hardware and the HTPC "new purchase" market is (I believe) mostly in cases/cooling that allow people to repurpose older hardware, or completely standalone HTPC-specific all-in-ones like a NUC or Zotac Zbox.

That's true. My HTPC is actually a repurposed Ryzen 3 3100 that I had lying around as spare parts around an A520 motherboard. It would have been nice to swap the CPU with an APU equivalent (if there ever existed one) instead of buying a GT 1030 just to support the newest video codecs, but I'm sure I'm in the minority with that wish. :ohwell:

Edit: The advantage of a HTPC made out of new parts instead of ones reused from an old gaming rig is the reduced power consumption, heat output and noise.

System Name M3401 notebook
Processor 5600H
Motherboard NA
Memory 16GB
Video Card(s) 3050
Storage 500GB SSD
Display(s) 14" OLED screen of the laptop
Software Windows 10
Benchmark Scores 3050 scores good 15-20% lower than average, despite ASUS's claims that it has uber cooling.
Ok, guys, so ASUS has 1000 Euro Vivobook that wields:

14" OLED 2880k screen (!!!)
5600x
3050 (!!!)
16GB RAM
512GB HDD
Very impressive sound.
I get about 3-5 hours of battery life on 60% charge.
Model: M3401

Try to find it here: geizhals.de.
Nope, nothing.
But there is 1300 Euro "roughly the same thing" with Intel inside.
Where is M3401? Hidden on Asus.com (yes, you can still buy it):

So ASUS is both selling and NOT selling it.
As if "special relationships with Intel" (c) Dell are back in town... =/

@ARF
glad you think you are the benchmark for what ppl can/cant do with their hw, or what they should/shouldnt buy.
Still chuckle every time i read "now isnt a good time to buy.."
why? cause you say so? i guess you know the price changes in every country for every day and all parts..

I had do build a xmas gift for a friend taking it home ( so build had to be finished in a week), but because little price difference between "value<>perf" parts,
i decided to get the faster stuff (than planned) and upgrade his and my machine as well,
so neither ram/cpu/m2 cost more than similar stuff i bought in the past 2y, Corsair 3600C14 and Corsair 650RM 100$ each, 5600x 270$, Crucial gen4 500GB 95$,
i now have upgraded from 3600x (3800x had no stock) to 3800XT, to 5800x, and probably sell it when i can get what fits AM$ one more time,
so yeah, coplete waste of time what amd is doing :D

The problem with Vermeer S is that it's a dead end and the next generation Raphael will be launched fairly soon..

AMD has no problem in losing the "performance crown" because it's not important at all, unless you are willing to wave your willie...

The price of the products is the deciding factor.
Fairly soon? Per AMD's latest roadmap, Raphael is planned for the 2nd Half of 2022, that isn't "soon". A Zen3+ refresh isn't bad to compete with intel until the 2nd half of 2022....
