Samsung has been caught doing the exact same shady dealings as all the other manufacturers, and has been caught doing this garbage for years (remember their TV capacitor issues?). They have no trus tor standing to be raising prices, and I hope it backfires on them.
it wasn't the "exact same" thing and you should know it. Anyway i don't own any samsung products besides one ssd (it's my 3rd one no complaints, long lasting, speeds exactly as advertised), but it seems people hate samsung here with real intensity :D

In terms of reliability, you're giving a win to Samsung? Really? Their electronics, from TVs to washers to fridges, are well known for failing right outside of warranty. A pillar of quality they are not.

Same with phones. If I get a call from someone saying their phone is out of storage, 99% of the time it's a samsung that has filled its filesystem with crap. Never have I seen an LG, motorola, HTC, pixel, or apple phone do this.

Samsung is a flaming pile of garbage right now.
I don’t care about giving Samsung a win, but still think LG is worse. They can’t even make a reliable heat pump, which is considered to be a top of the top product and 10 times the price of an A/C. Now about phones I hope we are talking about similarly priced devices.

Good old GREED. Anyways, Samsung has been caught multiple times in fixing prices, bribery and idk what else. It's a shady company run by scumbags and i don't support scumbags.

+1 from me. I usually try to avoid the “Samsung tax”, but when it comes to the system ssd at the office, Samsung remains the first choice, WD and maybe Crucial the alternatives.

Swapping out the controller is something ALL manufacturers hav ebeen dinged for. Same with shrinking write cache.

The onyl thing samsung hasnt dont that other shave is swap TLC for QLC, although its a matter of time. Samsung was the last caught doing the controller swap, wouldnt surprise me if theywere the last caught doing the QLC swap too.

It seems someone wants to defend samsung no matter how many point out their dealings. "hate" is a strong, and wildly overused word. Shady company is getting shade for shady dealings is not "hate", its an appropriate reaction. Hate is irrational anger, avoiding a company caught repeatedly cheaping out on products or refusing to fix issues isn't irrational to most people.
Now about phones I hope we are talking about similarly priced devices.
Depends, do you consider a $200 samsung A series to be on the same level as $150 lg stylus phones and $100 motorolas? Are $650 samsung galaxy S series phones the same tier as HTC or pixel phones? Because they are to me.

It's a software issue that samsung has had for years (and never fixed). Much like their UI performance degregation that was a major complaint for nearly a decade before they finally enlisted google's help in fixing it.

Don't worry, no one has to buy Samsung SSDs. They are not dominant. Just don't buy their products. There's nothing special about them anymore. They are not the best in SSDs (that would be WD and Sandisk). They are not the best at TVs (that would be LG). They are not the best for phones (Chinese stuff plus Apple). Don't buy. Problem solved.
In terms of SSD's yes. Others have cought up in terms of performance and reliability. But that was not always the case. Back when SSD's were new Samsung was generally the gold standard where others were dropping (dying) like flies. Case in point OCZ and Intel mostly but i've had many Crucial ones fail too. The only major Samsung SSD snafu i can remember was the 840 old files read speed issue that was fixed with firmware.

They were never best in TV's imho. Back when CRT's were a thing Sony was the top dog. With a move to LCD LG started dominating thanks to their IPS technology and later OLED.

In phones i have to disagree tho. Atleast in Android phones Samsung is still the best when it comes to offering 3 major android versions and not only on their high end phones. Also unlike some others they are not strictly enforing rules like no bootloader unlocking or custom ROM flashing. In terms of pricing they are not the best because it's hard to compete with chinese slave labour but in terms of software support and default UI they are the best in Android camp. Chinese knockoffs with their mediatek chipsets and no updates and bloated UI's dont even come close.
The only other manufacturer who is as good in supporting their phones is Sony but they seem to have pivoted to niche high end devices with very low sales volume.

I got a WD Blue 2TB on sale around black friday for $200 CAD. Now I refuse to pay anything more than that.

As for the bait n switch, swapping out TLC for QLC is low, pretty much unforgivable if they don't put a big giant sticker on it notifying the buyer of the changes.

edit - is there a software tool that can determine the NAND chips without pulling apart the SSD??

I've exclusively been buying Samsung SSD for several years now, usually on sale. I've seen almost every other brand fail in the wild. The only failure I've seen with a Samsung SSD was SATA connector break off. Samsung covered it under warranty. That being said, there is only so much of a premium I'm willing to pay for that. If everyone else lowers prices by 10% and they raise them by 10%, that may be the tipping point for me. I will gladly pay extra for superior customer service, and even what I personally perceive to be superior quality, but there definitely are limits.

No. He meant the Sn570, not SN750.

The SN570 is a recent release (mid-2021) that was meant to be a replacement to the SN550 which was caught in the TLC-QLC scandal. Specs and performance are somewhat similar to the 'old' TLC SN550 before they did the bait and switch to QLC

WD swapped out higher performance TLC for lower performance TLC in the SN550. No QLC switch there, that was Crucial.

What customer support? I'm pretty sure most of them let huge call centers in India or Philippines handle all of the customer support calls. Its a ball ache no matter which company you deal with. I swear, they make people not want to call them for support with the way some of them set up their menus and making you listen to long narrative lists...

Samsung sells their SSDs through newegg in Canada and then denies warranty coverage. Scummy company. The love the "this should only be sold in the US" approach to warranty coverage. They do the same thing with TVs. They control all pricing now. They were a top company 5+ years ago but now their SoC in their phones is 3 years behind Apple, they refused to release good quality TVs at quality prices and got squashed by LG OLED (NEO is a joke, why pay more for a Samsung LCD than an OLED?), and their SSDs went from the best (3D cache) to overpriced and not the best.

Good timing on the SK Hynix P41 announcement then. I only bought a 970 EVO Plus due to a huge discount earlier this year, being available as 2TB and solid performance numbers, but going forward I doubt I'll buy Samsung again. 980 showed me Samsung are no longer the top dog.

SK hynix is a good Samsung SSD replacement.

My SK hynix Gold S31 feels quite snappy...:).

It's much cheaper too.

What customer support? I'm pretty sure most of them let huge call centers in India or Philippines handle all of the customer support calls. Its a ball ache no matter which company you deal with. I swear, they make people not want to call them for support with the way some of them set up their menus and making you listen to long narrative lists...
Sorry if you've had trouble, but Samsung support was amazing for me to deal with. I talked to someone who spoke perfect English, and they were extremely helpful. Like I said before, they RMAed a SATA SSD that was already very well-used that I broke the SATA connector on accidentally myself. It probably shouldn't have broke but they covered it 100%, no shipping charges or anything. I had a new drive in a few days.

Sorry to hear that, my experience has only been with US Samsung service. It sounds more like Newegg or one of the resellers was doing something they were not supposed to do. It still sucks if you are stuck in the middle. You are right to be unhappy about it.

Well the only mainstream (one that isnt purchased for NUC or temp usage) SSD I own (MX500) that isn't Samsung branded happens to have a horrible firmware bug for write amplification, I was probably extremely unfortunate to buy a buggy revision out of many good products across alternative vendors, but at least for the time being I will value the Samsung brand for SSD products.

Luckily I dont buy SSD's often the price per gig ratio is horrific and looks like it wont be good any time soon, so SSD's for me still remain only for the moments I need i/o performance which for the most part is boot drive, games and video editing.

what's really needed is a widely published up to date spreadsheet of good drives clearly marked in green and the degraded ones + QLC trash highlighted in bright red, and then reference / link to / quote the hell out of it on every Amazon / Newegg, review / ordinary Joe website.
