Samsung RDNA2 Xclipse 920 GPU 25% Faster Than Adreno 730 in Vulkan Benchmarks

The upcoming Samsung Exynos 2200 mobile processor that is set to feature in the S22 series of phones features an RDNA2 Xclipse 920 GPU designed in collaboration with AMD. This new GPU has surfaced in various Geekbench scores where it handily outperforms the Adreno 730 found in the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The Exynos 2200 achieved an OpenCL Geekbench score of 9,143 points which is 50.7% higher than the OnePlus 10 Pro sporting a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. The processor also performed impressively in the Vulkan benchmarks scoring an average of 8,556 points which places it between 17 - 25% faster. These synthetic benchmarks aren't always entirely reflective of actual performance and we have yet to see power and heat figures so we will need to wait until Samsung officially releases the S22 lineup on February 9th to determine if this will be the new mobile champion.

Exactly this. Heat and power matter a lot more than speed. What good is it to break benchmark records if your phone overheats when you open a new tab in Chrome and lasts only half a day on battery?

I suppose it depends what you want your phone to be good at. Maybe for a "gaming" phone the Samsung 2200 will be better. For me now, my phone is a phone, I don't give a flip how good the GPU is or how quick the CPU is, does not really matter any more, unless opening the phone app 1.2 seconds faster is that important.

I couldn't agree more. The speed of your phone mattered 10 years ago, when cheap phones came with slow, single-core CPUs, some basic RAM and not enough storage. Nowadays, when even the most basic phone has an 8-core CPU and 2 GB RAM, the "power consumption vs battery capacity" ratio is what wins me over. Funny enough, cheap phones tend to be a lot better in this regard. That's why I love my Galaxy A20e.

This. A gaming phone... Hihi. I don't know but every time I see it, gaming on phones beyond some simple point and click, I just can't help but feel sorry for the user/gamer. Are you seriously playing a shooter? Meanwhile the guy was still moving on-screen as they take their thumbs off due to the massive latency hit.

Given the gradual obsolescence of the Note lineage in favor of the increasingly larger S+ variants, I wonder if the Galaxy Note line will become the "gamer" oriented phone line with the RDNA GPU (and maybe the Fold as well). That said, I'm more interested in a possible Galaxy tablet with the new GPU.

I have a couple of simple shitter games, games i play on the shitter, but otherwise don't bother any more. Got fed up of charging it twice a day. Also heavy game use on a phone destroys the battery. The number second hand high end phones around with battery capacity ruined from heavy use is high, and new battery fitting for these high end phones is not cheap. If you want mobile gaming then get a switch or good android tablet etc and use your phone for what it is, a phone

The advantage of such a product isn't in raw performance only, but on driver quality.
SoC vendors produce the worst trash they dare to call OpenGL ES and Vulkan drivers, an actual RDNA2 with AMD drivers is miles ahead of what the competition can come up with.
To give you an idea, the Vulkan spec is being actively limited to allow SoC vendors to continue to produce limited products.

We all know that Samsung can't design good silicon but the Mali GPUs they've used until now have worked just fine, the issue has been that Samsung has coupled them to their shitty Exynos CPUs. So all they're doing is replacing Mali with RDNA2... which isn't going to make the CPU side any less shit.

Obviously it benefits AMD because they're trying to shove RDNA2 in literally everywhere except where it would be most useful (which is Ryzen iGPUs), but my guess would be this is just another stupid marketing ploy from Samsung to prop up Exynos, that will fail like everything else Exynos-related because Samsung can't design good silicon.
