Alphacool today announces the first active backplate for GeForce RTX 3080/3090 graphics cards from Alphacool. The Eisblock Aurora GPX-N Acrylic Active Backplate is the perfect upgrade for Alphacool's Eisblock Aurora Acrylic/Acetal GPX-N GPU custom water coolers as well as Alphacool's Eiswolf 2 GPU All-in-One solutions. With the help of the backplate, the graphics memory on the back of GeForce RTX 3090 graphics cards can now also be actively water-cooled. With the help of 7 W/mk thermal pads, the active backplate has direct contact with the graphics memory to be cooled and can cool it more efficiently. This results in a significant increase in cooling performance.

Like all products from Alphacool's Eisblock Aurora GPX acrylic product line, the active backplate also features brilliant illumination. Six addressable digital RGB LEDs are embedded directly within the cooler. The effect is an illumination that encompasses the entire cooling block and creates unique lighting effects. The digital aRGB LED lighting is connected via a JST 3-pin connector and can be controlled with a digital RGB controller or a digital RGB-capable mainboard.

This really makes me wonder how much power these cards actually draw? That is 2 blocks on 1 GPU? Wow.

The 8GB GDDR6X on 3070Ti is drawing like 80 watts more compared to a normal 3070.

SO a passive 12GB of 100's watts just sitting on the back is a fire hazard to begin with.

It's more the memory itself than the whole card. The ICs on the back of the card draw more power than is reasonably handled by a thin, flat aluminum backplate.

The 3070 Ti has more CUDA cores and higher clocks too, which account for most of that 80 W. The ICs on the back of the 3080 Ti and 3090 are putting out a few tens of watts, not hundreds.

This is for existing Waterblocks.

Put on a skimpy pin fin and make it passive cooling. That is if you leave it outside and let nature help

I guess adding active backplate on 3080 is purely cosmetic? There are no memory modules on back, so everything is cooled properly by front block.

I have Alphacool Eisblock Aurora Acetal GPX-N on a reference 3080, GPU is usually around 40 degrees, VRAM under 60, junction temperature under 70, so I don't think I'd gain anything except less flow due to added block and fittings.

I think the main will be 3090s. I wonder what kind of performance increase you would see with your entire GPU around 40 C?
