If you're strictly looking for a PC for gaming, the 5800X3D might be the way to go. If you have other uses for your computer and want something better and still solid with gaming almost any other current CPU will handling practical applications just as good as 5800X3D or better and still provide solid gaming performance.
In my situation I have days where I'm putting a lot of stuff on my Plex server and the speed and effectiveness of the 5900x is awesome for my needs. Otherwise I use it for gaming. I'd rather have a 5900x that excels at encoding work by upwards of 40% over the 5800X/X3D (I'd even be happy with a 12700K that's right there with the 5900X at encoding) and is a solid CPU for gaming over just having the top CPU for gaming - be it the 5800X3D or 12900KS.
I find it hilarious that so many people are crying Intel best! AMD best! and how they argue back and forth about a miniscule thing such as "gaming king".
I don't care what side holds the "gaming king" crown. What I can admit to is that I'm impressed with the 5800X3D as it comes in lower clocked than the 5800X and in gaming it surpasses what the 5800X can do and comes within spitting distance (sometimes surpasses) what the 12900KS does. It's a cool feat to see from AMD. Anyone unwilling to see this and admit it, they are a fool or a moron.
I for one like to take the reviews done by W1zzard and other sites such as Techspot. Use that information to base my opinion on what would be best for my needs. Everyone else should do that, too, and stop trying to convince the other side of the spectrum that your way is right and they're wrong. It's hard to talk someone down when they don't want to be.
In the end:
Strictly gaming and don't do much else? Go for that 5800X3D build if you want to save some money over a 12900K build.
Lots of media encoding? Go for the 12700k or 12900k from Intel or 5900x or 5950x from AMD.
Maybe you want that bragging rights for overall fastest and/or most expensive? The 12900KS is what you're looking for.
You don't plan on gaming? Then who cares what CPU you pick, find one that meets your needs.
Build your computer for your needs, enjoy what it does and enjoy the new hardware that keeps coming out in the reviews.
