Ubisoft Announces Plan to Shut Down Servers for 15 Games

No... they verify you own the game, because you have a serial key and that check is installed in the base level version of the game on CD (however you bought it, that initial check for valid serials is included internally. DLC gets added later, and verified externally)

Some are added entirely with the same key (complete editions and stuff like that). This is a problem of Ubisoft simply being bad, Steam for example uses the same key system for games or dlc or whatever you buy on the platform (or outside stores)

Again, you do not own the game or the DLC. You simply license the rights to access the publisher's property. Licenses can be revoked.

Well, guess I'll shamelessly pirate whatever they ever decide to revoke.

Often times, what is installed on your machine isn't even playable. Loot tables and such are kept on the server "to prevent cheating", that's how you end up with stupid always-online requirements for single player games.
That's how diablo 3 worked, to make sure people got exact percentages of items and they stayed nice and rare

Well, guess I'll shamelessly pirate whatever they ever decide to revoke.
Well, that might not even work - not everything CAN be pirated.

Good luck if the DLC was multiplayer maps or content, because unless the game had dedicated servers or LAN hosting, you'll never see it again.

And while that's understandable from a certain point of view, what's the point of holding people playing on their own to the same scarcity. That basically locks single players out of high-end content. With a side of lag while playing on your own.

I never said i agree with it - i hate the practice. But it's how they run modern gambling to keep demand high and artificially inflate prices - remember that D3 had real-money trading, so they had a financially incentive to do that.

They see these DLC as something they can charge you for, and when sales stop coming in they just abandon it like it never was. I love my retro gaming so while I may blandly state why they do what they do, i sure as hell don't like it.

Next year or two they be trying to resell it all HAHA,
I chuckled at your post initially, but seriously...watch. Within the next several years it wouldn't shock me even the slightest bit to see some "Ultimate Edition" for these earlier AC games (as an example) get released that has all the DLC that they just took away from people, re-included that people now have to buy...again.
I'm just going to grab cracked copies that have all the DLC in them already. Fk Ubisoft and their anti consumer behavior.

Oh, don't worry, it's even worse than that. Games actually manipulate these rates to reel you in and make you spend money. For example, when they see you're a returning player, your chance of getting good/great items goes up, because if you find something noteworthy on your return, there's a good chance you'll stick around more. Besides that, World of Tanks was shown to increase your bounce rate in time, to make you want to spend on a better tank.
Sure, not all games are like that, but when online connectivity is used like that (even sporadically), that's an extra reason to give those games the finger. At least for me.

Not that AC (the early ones at least) had a lot of expansions but they actually already did just that, the Ezio Collection includes the second, third and fourth games (the ones following Ezio Auditore da Firenze) all in a neat package. There's also AC 3 Remastered and AC 4 black flag had a couple different "complete" versions as well (that one had a ton of DLCs that were total crap, but also a very noteworthy expansion) - no remaster yet though.

?t=207 for relevant time stamp. They do a good and interesting tear on Ubisoft. Interesting detail they point out is that you'll still be able to play multiplayer on consoles... because the multiplayer is handled by consoles... because Ubisoft is garbage! :D

That is almost guaranteed thanks to consoles.
New console? Time to re-release all the old games with minor upgrades!
