faulty memory controller or faulty memory module???

hello i recently bought a broken gtx 1070 hybrid ftw card to try and fix it and i tried running mats and mods on it and it gave a weird results or at least a new result to me because am a beginner at using mats and mods i noticed that

FBIOB0 and FBIOB1 had the same exact number of errors and FBIOC0 and FBIOD1 had a concerningly similar amount of errors too and before i lose all hope i just want to know the problem that its having as i believe that if its fixable then i could probably try fixing and if not i can use the chips on it to fix other gpus so its a win win but id really love to fix this one because its water+air cooled and i really like its design i really hope someone can figure this out and help me

I don't think you will get many replies here on such fault. In most cases it's memory fault, not the controller. It maybe a good idea to have a full reballing stencil kit for all sorts of memory type as it seems you do many repairs. (It's very cheap). ..You then have a choice to replace or re-ball/replace.

i do not really do repairs at all infact am just getting into this and i really love it so ive actually ordering a full soldering station with a reballing stencil kit so i can learn on cheap/old/broken PCBs and when i have enough experience ill replace 1 new memory module instead of 1 of the broken ones on the gpu to see if its still corrupted and if it is then its most likely a faulty memory control chip but if its fixed then ill replace the rest of the faulty memory modules if not then too bad

You don't know if it's a faulty memory chip, it could be a cracked solder joint, this is why I recommend a re-balling kit. Most user change the chip, but don't check confirm the old chip was faulty. They change it & clear the fault, but never confirm the old chip was faulty. Crack solder joint could be a piece of solder has broken off completely & lodged itself in-between two contact points. If you are just getting into this, then I strongly recommend practicing on "Dead PCB" first. You need to master de-solder/re-ball/re-solder on the same pads repetitively to understand at what point will i lift solder pads.. If you can do this more than 10+ times without lifting a single solder pad, then you are ready.

You also need solder balls, they very cheap too. I recommend getting a small bottle containing 25,000+ balls or more. Solder ball size is normally written on the stencil.

When carrying out this kind of work for the first time, you may get it wrong first few times, but keep at it, you will soon get it right.


EDIT: When buying the stencil make sure it comes with the "stencil holder", otherwise you will not be able to re-ball without it.

EDIT2: Have you tried updating the BIOS before even thinking about hardware changes. This is what I would try first. .....Check that the BIOS is not corrupted. Try updating this first before you do any hardware changes.

When flashing any hardware that has faulty memory it's strongly recommended to use an external programmer, I hope that's what you have. External programmer is easy to use after familiarize yourself with the software.

Last word of warning, get lots of practice in on dead PCB you do not care about.

hello just a couple of minutes i got bored of waiting for the things i ordered to come so i decided to open the card to visually inspect if there are any damaged smds and after looking for a while using my phone zoom as a magnifying glass i found this next to one of the broken memory modules this was the only thing that looked out of place on the whole gpu so im guessing the problem is caused from it but now i have to figure out what i should do next if you do know please let me know. thanks alot
