Prices of the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) entertainment system are on the boil globally. The Verge tabulated prices across 7 key regions for the console, and found that they've been adjusted by anywhere between 3% to 24%, with the worst hikes hitting SCE's home market of Japan. The PS5 is available in two variants—the standard one with a Blu-ray drive, and a Digital Edition variant that lacks it, and relies on the Internet to download and play new games. The latter is significantly cheaper.

Canada sees the mildest price hikes, ranging between +3% for the standard version, and +4% for the Digital-only version. Australia, Mexico, and the United Kingdom are next, with price-hikes ranging between 7% to 9%, depending on the model. China and Europe (the Eurozone) see exactly 10% to 12% hikes. The worst hit, as we mentioned, is Japan, with 21% to 24% hikes. The specific MSRPs for the two variants are tabulated below. Interestingly, Interestingly, SCE hasn't finalized a price-hike for the US, but you can bet that they're coming.

If I could walk into a store and buy one at MSRP, I would have by now.

Anyone else think Sony is completely braindead by not raising the price to begin with?

What the hell Sony is thinking, 21% in its home market. I believe Microsoft is already with this Sony made it even easier.

I joined the direct Sony que over a year ago, and I got in around March/April, so I got mine direct from Sony website at MSRP. It was similar to EVGA's Nvidia gpu que they did for awhile, but of course you had to have a in-use PSN account I think to join the que. My PSN account is like from PS3 days, so I don't know if that helped my odds in the que or not. Really glad I got mine though, looking forward to God of War Ragnarok on November 9th, I got it pre-ordered. @WhiteNoise thanks for getting me back into this series btw!

There is one for 635€ on sale right now. It's still laughable that nearly 2 years after release, you only can get scalper PS5's from eBay.
Out of 64 offerings there are only 16 not from eBay. And they aren't sold out because of ripoff pricing.

What the hell Sony is thinking, 21% in its home market. I believe Microsoft is already with this Sony made it even easier.

Over here the Xbox Series X goes for around 150€ less over the table. ;) And yet the PS5 keeps outselling the xBox.

But they are way down compared to the last gen sale numbers, lol.

Oh, they can shove those prices, Im waiting the PRO on N5 TSMC and 50% more performance that would be able to hold 1440/120

People are weird.
Sales I believe the Series are outselling the PS5s, probably the Series S that's making the difference.

In eurozone it was expected considering that the euro is under the dollar after so many years. Even if there wasn't an official price hike, the price would have gone up anyway because of Euro's fall.

Had to read thru this a couple times to understand this is all about raising the MSRP, not that etailers were raising prices

No, they've always worked this way after the ps3 cluster-fuck

PS4 was such a low price, they were perpetually out-of-stock on sites like Amazon; ps5 is looking to continue that tradition, thanks to the complete lack of killer apps from MS!

I wanted a Series X last year, followed some restock alert accounts on twitter and bought one at MSRP from Best Buy a couple of days later. You have to be in front of a computer during an availability window that's only going to last a minute or so, but that's not too hard if you already work at a computer all day anyway, and there's no markup whatsoever.

Got mine in March 2021 on an amazon restock kinda shocked they are still so ridiculously hard to get.

Odd the united states isn't getting an increase in price feel bad for people in other countries still trying to get one.

Probably something about Japanese buying their domestic product because, well, it's domestic. Of course in this case they get ripped off, but hey, humans.

Yeah, they should have done a $549.99 MSRP in USA imo. inflation is inflation. I'd rather see Sony do well

Most likely because the Xbox consoles do well in North America. In japan the Xbox could be 200 cheaper and it still wouldn't matter... In Europe it would probably have to be a 100 usd gap.

Right now with basically both high end console offerings selling out almost instantly it probably doesn't matter though.

110 yen = 1 USD. Now almost 140 yen = 1 USD. Japan has problems, that's why the PS5 has the massive price increase.

Someone gets it. This is what happens when the US dollar is strong. This Ukrainian war has flipped the markets in the US' favor. This is great for US citizens to travel abroad, but it sucks ass for the rest of the world. I'm a little salty that I'm no longer in Germany to buy stuff wholesale.

A lot of it is "pandemic recovery" or really pandemic ignorance on the US's part in favor of keeping the economy going. Either way, Sony loves money... and for a console that doesn't even support 1440p, yet.

Slow decline of Playstation has began then. Now Sony has to raise price to remain competitive. Wonder why that happened!(Like releasing your exclusive game on competitor's platform!)

A slow death of Playstation is inevitable if current plans continues.
