Minisforum Neptune HX90G Mini PC Goes on Sale at Introductory Discount Prices

The Minisforum Neptune HX90G all-AMD high-performance mini-PC went on sale at introductory prices. The lunchbox-sized mini-PC packs some serious kit, which includes an AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX "Zen 3" 8-core/16-thread processor, Radeon RX 6600M RDNA2 graphics with 8 GB VRAM, memory options that include dual-channel DDR4 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB; and storage options that include a M.2 NVMe Gen 4 SSD with up to 512 GB capacity. You can also buy it as a barebones, and drop in your own SSD and DDR4 SO-DIMM memory.

What's new here are the introductory prices. The barebones (which gives you the processor and GPU, but not memory or SSD), is priced at $799, down from its $940 regular price. The model with 2x 8 GB memory and 512 GB SSD, is priced at $909, compared to its $1,069 regular price. The 2x 16 GB memory + 512 GB SSD model is going for $969, compared to $1,129 regular price. The top model with 2x 32 GB RAM + 512 GB SSD, can be had at $1,079, compared to its $1,269 regular price.

I suppose the most important question here is: who is this intended for?

I like the idea of a Mini-ITX system with respectable graphics. The 16 cores 32 threads is a little overkill if this was intended for gaming; I just bought my RX 6800 and Sniper Elite 5 uses 15.7GB of dedicated video memory at 1440p. Besides that all of the other games I've tested use less than 8GB.

5900HX is a 8C16T mobile CPU not 16C32T desktop CPU.

A nice looking little box, with a cool design & features (the 4 video outputs & 2.5G network port being real important IMHO), but the barebones model is a tad overpriced...make it $599 & I'm in for at least 2, possibly even 116.45, hehehe

As for the intended buyer, I would think it would be suitable for just about anyone who plays average games as well as almost all office/home apps....except maybe for the most demanding stuff like CAD/data mining/pro-level video/image processing...

Given similar products in this form factor, mainly from Intel or Apple now, this is definitely much better VFM. Of course when you put stuff together yourself it will generally be cheaper!

I'm slightly weirded out by the fact that they use GPU-style fans instead of just one larger 120mm or 140mm fan that could be conventionally replaced.

Yeah, using custom parts where you could use standard, user-replaceable ones, always a head-scratcher. Not.

I know they just released one that has the stupid Intel NUC skull (do people seriously think that thing looks cool?) But is packing a rtx 3070M in it.

They just gotta price these things a bit better. I'm not sure what their overhead cost though is.

There is a whole world of computer uses beyond playing games. Many of them benefit from a reasonably fast CPU and don't depend on a GPU at all.

What am I missing here? If I am going to have mobile graphics why would I get this instead of a laptop?

Power brick on last picture, bottom left. And me personally have very bad experience with such type 4 pin power connectors, they have tendency to loose.
