After seeing this video, on how to connect a PS2 to a PC monitor, I am going to buy one,It would be off eBay
i have orded the Composite converter.
I have just seen another way to do this to use it on my PC.
I will give that a go later on ,that is a bit more involved ,i will leave that for a later date.
Has anyone tried the second option to use it on the PC.?

If it's cheap, try it? Send it back otherwise if it doesn't work?

Yes, the fat PS2's are the originals but there are a few variants of it too.
I don't know how old yours is but it's a good idea to check and have a spare laser handy, although mine lasted about 20 years not too long ago I finally had to replace it. The new laser solved a host of problems from disc "No reads"/"No disc detected", skipping/stuttering issues and so on. Cleaning the lens does help at times but it eventually gets to a point even that no longer works and that's why I finally got one and did the fix.
If you have to replace it, it's not that hard to do - Just pay attention to what you are doing, take your time and it will be fine.

It's not hard to do, biggest problem you may run into is what I described from the laser getting weak over time.
It starts off with it not being able to always read discs of a certain color, If I recall correctly I think the silver PS2 discs are what you'll notice it having problems with at first and it gradually progresses to other disc types.
Cleaning does help at first but over time it just gets worse and worse and that's when you'll know it's time for a new one.

I'll also suggest if you can, get two instead of just one replacement laser - That's what I'd do (And did in my case). One for now, one for later if it's ever needed and parts for these will become harder to find as time passes - It's inevitable you know.

I suggest using a Zess lens wipe whenever you have to do the cleaning for best results.

Looks like on the inside it's a single-chip board, basically a microcontroller that they're using as the analogue-digital converter:

1663413349342.png

The MS1858S is a single chip for analog CVBS/S-Video to HDMI, which integrated with 9-bit ADC of video and advanced HDMI 1.3 transmitter.
MS1858S consists of 3D video decode, high performance OSD, DMC, video scalar and high speed analog switch. It also provides frame rate conversion and progressive scan conversion with de-interlace.

I'm not too knowledgeable about TV-related stuff but the 27MHz frequency (external oscillator) is common in the world of digital TV. So the chip is timed accordingly to generate the compatible digital signals.

Should i go for this one?£38
He does say the battery has died does it take a normal PC one ,and is it easy to get in the machine to do it?From the video it looks like a big job to get in it to change the battery :(
Before i saw this video i wondered why the seller had not done it, but after seeing this video i can see why he sis not do it.I will give that a miss, and ask the seller of the other one if the battery is keeping time.

That's cheap, and will work, but it is not a quality converter/upscaler at all. Imagine plugging your composite cables directly into an older model HDTV that still carried them. It's not much different from that. You want something like a Retrotink that will not only do a better job upscaling, but lets you start with a quality source such as component, or RGB SCART. Beware of cheap SCART cables, though. All of the no-name cheap RGB SCART cables aren't RGB at all... they only carry composite, so they're no better than your regular red, white and yellow cables.

you'd be better off buying an old crt, it's been done to death but it's true, it looks so much better then in a recent monitor. And the higher end, newer, the worst it looks.

These video upscaler devices do convert old video sources to something that looks halfway decent on modern flat panel displays. I have no specific product recommendations though.

If you buy the PS2, beware that there may be other issues beyond the laser and the image quality. Remember that an optical drive is a mechanical device and there are other points of failure. One optical drive I owned stopped working when the rubber band that connected the motor to the disk spindle broke. The motors themselves don't last forever.

Recently I've watched some people play games on vintage consoles (on Twitch, YouTube) and seen them suffer through malfunctioning hardware. One Japanese streamer was cooling an old console with a handheld fan while he was gaming. He'd run through part of the game and at a convenient moment, he'd pause and cool down his device.

For sure, these people are also using some sort of video converter device to input the console's audio/video into their computer for streaming.

While you may not experience all these hardware failures at the same time, you should be keenly aware that these are all commonplace failings for older console hardware. Even if it works the day it arrives on your doorstep, there's a good chance it will have problems later down the line.

I got a couple of these. Standard RCA to hdmi for og xbox and older systems and a component to HDMI for a 360 and other devices.

Works great.

If you like these old consoles you should get a CRT as well, a 34" specifically if you can find one. Games will look great on it, better than in an LCD/LED due to the grille.

The best option for playing PS2 games natively on a modern TV is by using a backwards compatible PlayStation 3, preferably models CECHAxx or CECHBxx.

The CECHC04 (European launch model) and CECHExx series have only the GS processor inside and thus suffer from some inaccuracies as the EE is emulated, you essentially want a Japanese or American model A (60GB, chrome trim) or B (20GB, black trim) console.

The catch is that units in good condition have begun to seriously increase in price as only the earliest consoles have this capability, and Sony stopped making them circa 2007. No one cared about the removal of BC from the PS3 because at time one would still find PS2s, accessories and CRT TVs fairly easily... but time went on.

However you might still find one on eBay or classifieds if you keep a keen eye.

My CECHA01 has been one of the best purchases I've made in the past few years, though getting an original DualShock 3 controller has been a challenge lately...

I'm not sure if the 5x-pro is necessary. The 2x-pro or 2x-mini (though it is out of stock atm) should be fine.

Must disagree - Even though a PS3 can play those games well, the problem is a PS3 that's backwards compatable with PS2 games doesn't support all PS2 games - Alot of them in fact.

I have an "CECHA01" PS3 and ran into these issues with it.
I even checked and there is a list of games that's compatable with a PS3 but there are some that's not on this list so the PS3 will not play them.

Best bet for a PS2 game is a PS2 console to guarantee you can play whatever you've got.

I have to agree with this as well. For running PS2 games, nothing beats a fat PS2 with a hard drive and Free MCBoot...

Short of a few niche accessories, most games should be fully supported. What game have you been unable to play? I'm quite curious.
