The AM5 motherboard prices that cropped up over the weekend do indeed appear to be placeholders or early cash grab pricing, as MSI has revealed its official pricing for four of its upcoming motherboards in a live stream. Although the pricing is still very high, it's not as insanely high as the early listing suggested. Starting at the bottom with the Pro X670-P WiFi, we're looking at a US MSRP of US$329 excluding tax and an EU MSRP of €395 including VAT. Next up we have the MPG X670E Carbon WiFi for US$499/€599, which is a steep jump in the eurozone, but it's actually less than what the current exchange rate from US dollar to Euro is, if you add 20 percent VAT.

This is followed by the MEG X670E ACE for US$799/€969, which doesn't look like a particularly attractive option. Finally we have the MEG X670E Godlike, which retails for US$1299/€1599, but with early listings in Europe showing it at €2399. It puts the Godlike more in line with the previous Godlike board from MSI, but it's likely to be one of the most expensive X670E boards on the market. It's mentioned in the live stream that prices are expected to come down sometime after the initial launch and this is something we've also heard from other motherboard vendors. MSI aren't mincing any words about their pricing, but that's not going to help anyone interested in getting onboard AMD's AM5 platform. The live stream is linked below for those that are interested in more details about these boards from MSI.

Entry point of £395 (assuming parity) is horrendous. It's a shame the DIY pc industry has gone down this route. Genuinely thinking when I need to finally upgrade, I'll go console instead.

I wish MSI and AMD the best of luck on their Zen 4/AM5 launch. It's looking a little bumpy starting off. $800 to get into the MEG product line is nuts. :kookoo:

(This from an admitted MSI fan)
Intel won't be far behind. It's not going to be a nice few months for anyone looking at upgrading their PC.
Let's just hope that people dont' accept the "new normal" in terms of pricing, but I guess that's highly unlikely.

Completely agree. Until this announcement, Intel boards were the worst. I'm sure there's going to still be a market for components at these prices, but it's going to be impossible for this to be a viable hobby except for those with large amounts of disposable income.

My last few years have basically been bucket-list spending on computer parts, but even I couldn't imagine $329 for a bottom tier board. (I know, B650E/B650 is coming, but I'm sure they won't be half the price). :(

asrock 6800 xt $529, ASrock steel legend am4 mobo is $115, and Ryzen 5600 non-x variant is $149, 2x16gb ram at 3200 is $99 for 32 gigs. I can probably (hopefully) overclock to 3600 and 1800 IF.

basically, I think this is what I am going to do since I will be CPU bound anyway at 3440x1440. i honestly was wanting to do a new build with the next gen stuff, but its just out of hand now. stupid. and honestly a 6800 xt can do mostly what I want to do anyway. the prices right now for the old gen are just fantastic. just going to do it, and fuck this next gen basically. sadly. the industry is forcing my hand though.

B650 was (past tense here) supposed to start at US$129. With the kind of price hikes I've seen, we're most likely looking at $179 now.
Some B650E boards will cost more than some X670 boards.

As I was expecting these prices are ridiculous. I'll be holding of my PC upgrade for the time being. AMD lost the price/value king they developed during the previous Zen architecture. We'll see what B650 brings but I'm afraid I'll jump ship and move to Alder Lake.

Also actually LOL'ed at the livestream where the guy is basically saying "We know it's more expensive that you anticipated but for those who want to upgrade on a budget we have motherboards on the AM4 platform available now." LOL that's some Don Mattrick level PR trainwreck memories when he said back then on the Xbox One reveal: "fortunately, we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity, it's called Xbox 360."

im assuming the PRO variant is complete and utter trash and the entry point for a decent x670 board is $500 in the US (those across the pond have it even worse).

I was referring to the high-end z690 compared to high-end x570. The Z690 Ace is $549, and the X570s Ace is $359.

im assuming the PRO variant is complete and utter trash and the entry point for a decent x670 board is $500 in the US (those across the pond have it even worse).

The previous PRO (B550, Z490, Z690) boards haven't been bad at all. I consider them entry level for a board I'd actually use. The X670 PRO is only X670, not X670E though.

I think if you're into gaming better go for the 5800X3D, or some 12th gen before they get a price increase. Save to get a GPU instead maybe RDNA3 will be overpriced and not stupidly so.

400+ EUR (and you know it's gonna be using that PLUS sign) as the lowest price is just obscene... Sure, these are not low end boards, but they also not at the top.
Ridiculous. Oh well, I guess we can wait 1-2 months more...

Man, insane pricing, insane power draw. It almost seems like they're doing everything they can to kill off the pc building hobby and direct people to consoles, prebuilts, or things like GFE/Stadia. If you're looking to build now, might as well grab one of the numerous cheap X570 boards and a 5800X3D.

400€ for the basic "pro" board is pretty bad... damn zen4 is up for a rough start...

Intel won't be far behind. It's not going to be a nice few months for anyone looking at upgrading their PC.
Let's just hope that people dont' accept the "new normal" in terms of pricing, but I guess that's highly unlikely.

But Intel has the advantage of older boards at least, zen4/am5 doesn't. Got to hope for more reasonable prices when B650 hits
