I'm under the impression that for AMD, the "low end" is just old gen. Zen 2 is not EOL.

Correct. Have they adjusted the prices accordingly, so people can really understand that the pricing is "low end", too?

In conclusion, are they doing good or are they doing bad?

Not as wrong as you might think. Given that the nodes are new, people who know the exact costs are bound by NDAs. However, there have been some estimates. According to SemiAnalysis,

Another article claims that 5nm mask sets cost around $10-15 million. For a 6 core chiplet which will share a lot of its design costs with the bigger chiplet, the costs are likely to be much lower than you might think.
"Handel Jones, CEO of International Business Strategy Corporation (IBS), said: "The average cost of designing a 28nm chip is US$40 million. By comparison, the cost of designing a 7nm chip is US$217 million and the cost of designing a 5nm device is US$416 million. , 3nm design will cost up to 590 million US dollars."

Yes, and that's why they report record profits each and every quarter, so they can and will pay the bill..

That's the cost for a de novo chip, and they don't mention their assumptions. For a chip derived from another chip, as a 6 core chiplet would be, the costs would be much lower.

Addendum: The design cost for a Zen 4 or RDNA 3 is probably higher than the cost estimate from the article you quoted as these are more complex than your average ASIC. However, the additional cost for a derivative chip is much lower.

well, there's the 4500...zen2, but probably slower than the 3600x, and you can get the 5500 zen 3 for nearly the same price in some shops. On the desktop AMD just seems lost starting from the midrange. The 7600x doesn't make any sense in 2022, and things will not get better when intel will release the i5 13400. They need to rethink their strategy

You'll notice something interesting if you look at Milan: yes, they are using single core chiplets with Epyc. Some SKUs are also using 2 or 4 cores chiplets. So AMD is already making lower core count chiplets, they just decided to not use them with Ryzen.

No, all the chiplets are the same ,there isn't a six or quad part, some Epic chips are aimed at pciex bandwidth some are for core based compute.
They're just 8 core does with core's disabled, like a consumer 6/12 core.

Good job misleading people.
3600X does indeed start at 139.90.

From ebay. I never buy from ebay because the risk is very high. Fake people, fake products, no guarantee.. etc criminal content.

From ebay.
It's from a PRIVATE SHOP on ebay.
But in any case, it's a bizzarre EOL CPU with respectively bizarre pricing.
There is no sane reason to buy that dated shit for 333, when 5600x costs 185 and 5800X3D costs 370.

They cost so but they are not "low end". Show us something that costs from 55 to 85 and we can label it "low end" ;)

Ah. So 5600X that costs 185 is not "low end", however, 3600X that costs 330 is.

Mind boggling.

Here you go 5500 for $122, on the price of the cheapestintel i3 3th gen, 10 years ago. WIth the inflation for 10 years this is on the price of pentium

The cheapest Intel Core i3-12100F goes for:

But its performance compared with the Ryzen 5 5500 is more like a meh.
19474 PassMark - AMD Ryzen 5 5500 - Price performance comparison (cpubenchmark.net)

The thing is that the dollar is extremely expensive and if you convert to another currency, this $122 is not entry/low-end, no matter inflation and all other nonsense. The salaries haven't increased and we are in a deep recession with negative/worsening trend.

Very much this! And it doesn't mean that we should expect the 3600X to drop to 80€. It means that the Zen 3 and Zen 2 will be reused again for new designs. Why not, given proper tuning. It could be that AMD's older architectures can scale down better than Zen 4 in terms of power, core count, area and manufacturing cost.

Actually 5500 can be purchased for $99. On top of that, a new am4 board is much cheaper than new lga1700 board. With the today's prices of the hardware this is for me the true low end.
I even can find ryzen 5500 box edition for $95 in my country in Europe. The cheapest 12100f is $117for box and $100 for tray and this prices are not second hand parts. They are brand new from retailers

With or without tax? It's ambiguous if you tell a price in Europe (where retail prices include tax) in dollars (as US list prices are w/o tax).

Without any extra taxes. But this is only in single store that have huge discount now, but there are other stores with price around $105
