Netgear Launches Two Unmanaged Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Switches

A pretty modern home will probably have a couple of desktops, a file server/NAS, a printer, probably a TV and a streaming box or HTPC, perhaps a gaming console, and up to several laptops (which needs wired connection for work or school work, plus any gaming).
I think most users would plink almost half if not 3/4s of that list on wifi.

They probably would, but that's beside the point, as the people you are describing wouldn't have the know-how to even buy a 2.5G switch, or even know what a switch is.

As homes get more and more mobile devices, "smart" appliances, "smart" lighting, baby monitoring, etc., wireless are becoming more and more "useless" for the demanding use cases, like home office/video conferencing, school work, gaming, TV/streaming, etc. Getting everything that is stationary on Ethernet is also the most important step to improve the experience for the remaining wireless devices. But you should know all this.

I wouldn't go that far as I probably would plink at least half that list on wifi.

But you should know all this.
Considering most if the devices you describe have limited to nearly no traffic, no, we shouldn't.
