I know that idle temps depend on a lot of of variables like ambient temperature, cpu voltage offset, cpu cooler, case airflow, cpu thermal compound etc.
My Ryzen 9 7900x idles at 50°C at 21°C ambient with NZXT Kraken X63 mounted on it inside a Lian Li O11 dynamic EVO.

I have a Ryzen 5 3600 running at stock settings, with a Deepcool GAMMAXX 400 V2 64.5 CFM CPU cooler, it idles at around 37-40°C. At normal (non stress test) usage, it tops out at like 62°C. Pretty cool, I'd say.

Hi,
Yeah in general you should idle about 4c higher than room temperature 9940x/ 10900k/ 5930k

Idling at 50c I'd say your system wasn't really idling, as in doing nothing

Or cooler is shit.

At stock settings the cpu generally prefers to stay at or near the boost of 5.6 GHz which contributes greatly to the high heat generation even while just sitting on desktop with just Chrome and vlc running. The tropical temperatures here also don't help.
Cooler is working fine I guess. It's a NZXT Kraken X63.

Hi,
Maybe stock setting for performance mode power plan set at minimum cpu state at 100% just like max cpu state is.
Which can be lowered to 5% just like a balanced power plan.

But you're not idling if you were nothing would be running.

The 5950x is an insanely efficient cpu. Even at all core full load I have rarely seen it hitting 80C plus. Despite being built on TSMC 5nm the 7000 series runs at its thermal maximum partly due it's insane high frequencies and increased ppt limits.

Ryzens tend to have increased (average) idle frequencies, voltage, power consumption and temp when compared to Intel CPUs. They are made jumpy to even the slightest background load.
Windows power plan configuration can make big difference, also when more than 1 monitoring tools are running.
Even if 1 monitoring tool is running when it’s polling time is too short(less than 1000ms) or it’s polling method is keeping the CPU awake can cause increased speed/power/temp metrics.

wattage, so high idle temperatures continue to plague AMD users.
Not at all. A lot of coolers are not tuned for Ryzen and because of that users complain of temp spikes and all that. If you have a cooler or coolers that are tuned for Ryzen then you won’t have any spikes and have really good temps.

My CPU idles about 13C above the temp in my room. It depends on the CPU cooler's fan speed setup. And mine is at 50% from down low with the case fans at 800rpm.

1st image wasn't focused on the PC monitor that shows 35C on my CPU. Later on I screenshotted Core temp and as you can see on the right screenshot it fell to 34C.

Desktop Ryzen CPUs have an indecent idle wattage, so high idle temperatures continue to plague AMD users.

AFAIK Ryzen 7000 is even worse than previous gen CPUs in this regard. E.g my Ryzen 3700X idled around 12W, my Ryzen 5800X idles around 20W and from what I've seen Ryzen 7000 may consume as much as 51W in idle which looks kinda insane for me.
Not necessarily. My 7700X idles at 20 W with EXPO on at 6000 MHz, but at 10-12 W with RAM at 4800 MHz, EXPO disabled. It's connected to SoC voltage which jumps to the sky when the RAM is overclocked.

Edit: To OP: 35 °C with EXPO disabled, and around 38-39 °C with EXPO enabled. That's with a 280 mm AIO (be quiet! Silent Loop 2 280).
Edit 2: The room is at 23-24 °C.

Hi,
Only time I see frequency at 100% at idle is when I change bios settings and use the performance power plan which peg minimum cpu state at 100%

If amd is doing this at bios optimized defaults and using balanced power plan there is simply a amd/ windows incompatibility bug doing this.
So best to report it to both amd and ms.

I've not mentioned "temperature spikes" even once in my post. Not sure what you're talking about.
No that is true, but that was one of the bigger complaints from users, I was just wrapping it in with the cooler tuning thing.
I was talking about completely idle temperatures and desktop Ryzen CPUs suck in this regard.

And even still, I have to disagree.. I don't have any fans on my FC140 right now because I am waiting for the glue to dry on my rubber pads and TY-143 :D But its sitting at 33c as I type this post. I am tempted to run some OCCT

As for wattage, showing 29w..

Is it bad that my idle temps are just a hair fraction lower (45C) than my load (gaming 63C) temps? :) Fans barely move past 1000rpm

This is twice as high as 13900K which must be OK if you run AMD products. I get it. No matter what you say AMD fans will find a way to justify AMD faults which they haven't been able to fix for five generations now. God, this is pathetic. Admitting AMD could have done better is never an option.
I'm not comparing it to the 13900K. I switched from an 11700 non-K, which consumed the same when idle. So for me, it's fine.

The other thing is, 6 W or 12 W, this is not something that you feel in your power bill or your cooling needs, and certainly not something worth arguing about.

And I'm not an AMD fan.

The hell the IO die/chip is always active and devours energy like there's no tomorrow is outside of my understanding.
That's a different story. I'd also like to know the answer. My guess is that you need more power to connect different chips than to communicate across different parts of the same chip.

And AMD touts multi-chip designs like it's something crazy good which in reality can suck hard.
If it "sucked hard", it wouldn't be such a success, would it? Imo, chiplets are all about cost-saving on AMD's side. Without them, they wouldn't have managed to deliver up to 16-core consumer CPUs.

Absolute most desktop systems are idle at most times and Intel respects this while AMD seemingly doesn't give a damn.
Yeah, 12 W idle CPU power is so enormous that nobody can pay the bill after that.

Are we really having this conversation? :wtf:

It's not 12W on average as most desktop AMD CPUs idle above 20W and, multiplied by millions of systems, it's a very significant number coupled with the necessity of a discrete GPU until the very latest generation (I remember about desktop APUs/G but those have been quite unpopular).
Ah! I only have one Ryzen-based PC at the moment, so I guess I'm fine. ;)

If I was interested in every single global issue, my head would blow off. But even then, a 6 W difference in CPU idle power wouldn't be on the top of my list.

Edit: To idle above 20 W, you need some serious memory OC with through-the-roof SoC voltage.

Using what software? Or through BIOS?

Not the OP, but my preferred CPU temps monitoring tool is Core Temp. Can see current CPU temps from the taskbar even.
