Hello everyone. It has been a while since I posted here. I feel it is the time to upgrade my 6 years old 1080, but I do not want to upgrade the whole system. So as the title says, how well do the new 4xxx nvidia GPUs perform in an old system like mine? My system lacks resizable bar and other bells and whistles of the new CPUs.
This is not something anyone can ever answer since the GPU isnt the limit in many titles

If you simply run current games at 720p on low, you'll get a good idea what FPS the rest of your system can achieve (And older PCI-E gens dont slow the 4090 down much)

I'd be interested in seeing in how a GPU upgrade would benefit an X99 system or a z390 system (what I have) for that matter. Before and after benchmarks would be worth seeing.

The performance differences between my 5820 @ 4.45 Ghz. and my z390 @ 5.1 Ghz. were negligible with the same videocard (1080ti).
Hi,
Indeed the real pity is people missing the fact upgrading has to start somewhere
Start with a gpu first ? sure why not, now days gpu's are a major expense and no matter what people say a 30-40 series gpu will still work just fine on a x99 system

It is disingenuous to state otherwise and insist on replacing a entire build for a freaking new gpu just because blah blah.... it only costs another +-800.us for a new board/... lol :kookoo:

And once again 40 series is bad from a price point only not a compatibility point.

I didn't recommend a 6950X, I said a 5960X was the best choice to upgrade OP's existing system. Where are you paying $200 for them? They're on Ebay far cheaper. Here's one for $60 USD and free shipping. Intel Core i7-5960X 8-Core 3.0GHz LGA2011-v3 SR20Q | Fast Ship, US Seller! | eBay

OP stated: "I feel it is the time to upgrade my 6 years old 1080, but I do not want to upgrade the whole system." All factors considered the least expensive upgrade is a cheap 5960X. With all shipping and other charges involved it'd be well under $100. He stated he didn't want to build a new system at this point in time. End of discussion.

Here's the Passmark score of my 5960X @ 4.7GHz:

I don't know how your obsolete version of PassMark affects scores, but that CPU is scoring less than half of what my 5950X does...

What makes me depressed is that my filled to the brim WD SN350 with 7 GB of free space (single-die QLC budget drive) is still 82nd percentile on this thing. This isn't even a particularly tweaked result, it's just my PC as it is currently (and quite neglected I might add, I haven't done maintenance on it for some time).

Based on my experience with my Xeon E5-4669 v3, each individual core on my 5950X (plus its frequency advantage) is approximately 5 times faster, this reflects on almost every benchmark you can run from Cinebench to Prime to anything else, really.

Work? Yes. Perform? No. It doesn't keep up, thus making the purchase of a GPU that costs almost two thousand dollars completely irrelevant and an utter waste of resources. In this case, it's more than reasonable to advise for the complete replacement of the system, they aren't looking for a reasonable upgrade on a budget, they're looking for the ultimate upgrade - and this system just doesn't handle any of the Ada Lovelace or high end Ampere cards.

In fact? If OP used the same money to buy an i5-13600K, a Z790 DDR4 motherboard and an RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX, they'd have a FAR SUPERIOR experience than just installing a 4090 on this relic of the past no matter the CPU you install on it (and this includes the i7-6950X).

That version wasn't obsolete when the benchmark was done, it was the most recent one at that time. How many folks here would be willing to donate money or parts to OP so he can build a current state of the art rig? This entire thread has gone far off the rails from the original post. I have two Alder Lake rigs and they have 6800 XT and 6900 XT GPU's in them for a reason: Their price was what I was willing to pay when I built them. My 12700K may get a 13600K if Micro Center drops their price enough in the next few months. I won't put anything more than a 1080 ti in an old X99 PC.

Hey hey I want a donation to afford a 4090 to begin with... being a PC enthusiast is getting too expensive for me, bless AMD for still selling their flagship for a price mortals can pay... on credit

Yep, I have to agree with some of your arguments mate.

A GPU upgrade will give him more FPS than a CPU upgrade especially at 4K. He can always take his new card out and place it in a new platform when the time comes.

This is the part of the conversation everyone chooses to ignore in their haste to shove their opinions down each others throats. Whilst also ignoring that the OP isn't interested in a new rig. The latter having had been repeated over and over doesn't seem to matter for some reason.

When has the OP last posted? Why would he? Can't say that I blame him. The thread has devolved into a pissing match.

I am reading all the comments and I am really grateful for everyone's input. It made me lean towards saving more to upgrade my mobo/CPU. Being me, I do not think I will settle for less than a 13700K/KF. Now I am looking for a decent DDR 4 Z690 mobo (preferably ASUS) so that I do not have to upgrade RAM too. Let's hope by the time I save enough money, GPU prices will come down a bit.

This is pretty good overall.

Z790 has better RAM support than Z690, and doesn't require BIOS updates to use 13th gen Intel.

It's a good idea to get the K model, having integrated graphics is good for backup, and it's also helpful in certain software where the quicksync encoder is used.

Hi,
Yep waiting for gpu prices to fall has always been best thing to do atm
At least 6-10 months on newest gpu's and if you possibly can wait for releases and buy prior series.
Mining messed up the prior markets pretty badly it's mostly dead now and hopefully stays that way.

The TUF Gaming Z790-PLUS motherboard you linked to supports DDR4 speeds up to 5133Mhz. Has anyone ever managed to overclock DDR4 to those frequencies without resorting to exotic cooling solutions? Are there any DDR4 kits rated to go to 5000+ Mhz.?

Im beginning to be too interested in the back and forth here. I know what will happen, yet im still curious
You would do me a favor if you run benchmark in real games.

Those were just an example ;)

Here is a big list:

Seems to be only 8GB kits...

Not surprised it's only 8 GB sticks, digging a bit deeper you will find that they all use similar especially screened ICs from the same manufacturers as well. High density deteriorates maximum attainable frequency and affects the timings that the module can manage.

Honestly, you'd be quite surprised at the fight these old systems can put up. X99 was a great platform and I believe that will show for you. What impressed me the most was Apex Legends that runs on my Xeon at practically the same frame rates I get on my 5950X, other games such as GTA or Red Dead aren't as fortunate.

If the bottleneck is that bad that I can't get at least 144Hz or the refresh rate, Im moving to 5960X or 6900K first on the same socket 2011-3, for some reason. I like what 14nm can offer.
The cost of a new Combo is so insanely preposterous that I'd rather save for the next socket or the one after. I can only imagine some competitive players caring about frames above that.
New games tend to get heavier over time, the textures and shading code can take care of any currently untapped excess of GPU power, unless you play the regular esports titles that is.

6900k or better yet 6950x. Overclock em, no bottleneck. And good quality fast ram

So basically you want to play modern AAA games on it... yeap, I don't recommend it. Especially not Red Dead or the raytraced games there.

Hi,
Yeah looked at a few and recommended 1080 spec's AC-V looked the worst cpu wise with 4790k 4.4 turbo
Other couple were 4770k whopping 3.9 lol think 5820k can do that
But yeah cpu/ cache oc you should be fine with RT off.

Wild that someone has the same question.

I do 4k gaming on a LG CX 120FPS on:
EVGA 3090 FTW3
X99 + 5930k @ 4.4ghz
32GB G.Skill DDR4

I was under the impression that I am mainly GPU bound on a lot of applications. I tend to always go for the best Mobo / Chip when the time arrives and almost bought a 5960X today.

I personally can grab a 4090 and haven't pulled the trigger as I dont want to spend the money if it is not going to help much.

Am I right after reading this that a 5960X + 4090 would be a good go between until I find a better chipset / CPu under $600? I thought spending $1600 on the GPU would do more for me coming from a 3090 than a CPU / Chipset / Memory upgrade. I personally do games like:
Apex, SKyrim, Witcher, Overwatch all games that are not super intensive and already hit 120FPS. With the new Witcher upgrade, I finally got a bump down in performance. Love to hear your thoughts on this!
There are a handful of used 5960X's on Ebay for under $70 at the moment. There was a fully functional 6950X on there yesterday for $158 that's gone now. There are some for $200. Cooling an OC'd 5960X or 6950X could be problematic, especially a 6950X. I've been adventuring with X99 since it first came out and have built several rigs for A/V production. Counting the build I currently have in progress I have 6 X99 PC's of my own. Three are in use, two are stashed away for parts and one is about half completed (I do have everything on hand to finish it).

For the $$$ a 5960X will give the highest overclock speeds and eight cores. Memory limit is 64GB. Under load they run warm. My experiences with 6950X's have proven them to be not worth the money over a 5960X, all things considered. While you do get two more cores and the ability to run 128GB of RAM the heat penalty and lower OC speeds don't make them worth considering at this point in time. Since Xeons have locked multipliers plus V3's are limited to DDR4 2133 and V4's limited to DDR4 2400 (BLCK at 103.5 is what I use) for daily use they're a far better value. My in progress new X99 build is getting a pristine used EVGA GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 11GB I paid $207 for off Ebay. While I could have bought any GPU I felt like getting that was the limit for this project. I do have a RX 6800 XT and a RX 6900 XT in my Alder Lake builds though.

I'm relating my own personal hands-on experiences with X99. For OP I'd stick a 5960X in what he has and leave the rest as is for gaming use. For doing things with graphics an E5 2683 V4 is perfect. Other than that build something with current generation parts and get the most out of an expensive GPU.

Yep, I have to agree with some of your arguments mate.

A GPU upgrade will give him more FPS than a CPU upgrade especially at 4K. He can always take his new card out and place it in a new platform when the time comes.
