SilverStone on Wednesday introduced Extreme 850R Platinum, the world's first SFX power supply based on the SFX12V 4.0 standard, which has specifications comparable to ATX 3.0, and offers a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector capable of 450 W continuous output with excursion-tolerance within ATX 3.0 and PCIe Gen 5 specs, and improved sleep/wake performance.

The SilverStone Extreme 850R Platinum, as its name suggests, is an 850 W power supply, with Cybenetics Platinum switching efficiency. Under the hood is a single +12 V design with APFC, LLC, most common electrical protections (against over/under voltage, overload, and overheat); and 100% Japanese electrolytic capacitors. A 92 mm fluid dynamic bearing fan is used to cool the PSU, which is tuned to be fanless up to 150 W load, and 35-40% speed between 150-600 W load. Connectors of this fully-modular PSU include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, a 16-pin 12VHPWR connector keyed for 450 W, two 6+2 pin PCIe power, eight SATA power, and five legacy connectors. Available now and backed by a 5-year warranty, the SilverStone Extreme 850R Platinum is priced at USD $215.99.

Interesting..... So does anyone actually make a graphics card that needs the 12VHPWR that actually fits in a mini-itx case?

4080 FE with a compact water block, or one of those AIO-fitted cards such as MSI Suprim Liquid.

"which has specifications comparable to ATX 3.0"

So it's not actually compliant? I assume it isn't being that there's no atx 3.0 labeling next to the PCIe 5 on the box. That's unusual but maybe not. I've heard rumours that atx 3.0 compliance isn't all that easy to meet.

We do have a Micro-ATX case that fits RTX 4090 / 4080 but requires SFX / SFX-L power supply and we are not the only one.

The Extreme 850R Platinum is a SFX power supply, so it will never be called ATX 3.0 officially because it isn't an ATX sized power supply. That's why there is a different name of SFX12V 4.0, which is the equivalent of ATX 3.0 for ATX power supplies.

Nice to see SFF getting some love, hopefully SFX-L variant coming too for (at the very least) improved noise performance.

450w on 16pin only? Already drawing 450+ on 2x8 pins on the SF-700PT. It's likely greedy segmentation at this point

The Extreme 850R Platinum is rated as A- on Cybenetics's noise performance scale so it is remarkably quiet for a power supply that is over 1000W per liter in power density!

It would be irresponsible for us to include a 600W 12VHPWR connector with a 850W power supply as many high end CPUs are now capable of drawing 200W+ all by themselves, leaving only 50W for everything else!

Fair enough, >450W on GPU is primarily for benching, but there are games that benefit +5% up to around 550W. A few extra frames to push past 60fps is welcomed. The best gaming CPU is the 5800X3D and it consumes less than 120W at full throttle in y-cruncher.

The best efficiency is at 50% of the rated. So, if the PSU is 850W, then the desired total power requirements from the components should be around 425 watts.

I have a 750W PSU. My CPU is 105 watts. So, I leave for the GFX card around 250 watts and max 2 x 8-pin connectors.

My lianli O11 mini uses sfx psu. I have several smallish cases that could fit a "reference" 4090. Also the 450 limit is not enough for the 4090 to unlock full power limit. Would personally be interested in a 1000w SFXL psu with a full 600w 12vhpwr connector. Even though I might never have a card that uses it.

Under what real scenario will someone be drawing 600w gpu and 200w cpu at the same time on a SFX psu? But I get it for liability reasons.

While technically true, note that the difference in efficiency between half load (250W) and full load (500W) in that chart is 1%.

The "Buy a PSU rated at twice what you'll actually need" efficiency argument hasn't made much sense since the early 2000s. PSUs today are far more efficient overall than they used to be, across a much wider range of power delivery. :)

As always, buy sensibly. Over-speccing a PSU makes more sense at the low end, where quality differences are more readily apparent. If you're running an extremely high end system, a 100-200W buffer on the high end is sufficient. For as much time as they'll spend near the "sweet spot" of that efficiency curve, they'll spend just as much time on the low end of it during typical idle or desktop usage.

Nvidia's founders edition cards will fit a number of ITX cases. I've been waiting for native support for the 122VHPWR connector to come to SFX for a while now. Glad that is starting to happen.

i have an MSI 4090 liquid suprim x in a cooler master NR200p along with it's hybrid cooler. you can make it fit both vertically and horizontally.

cases like the Hyte Revolt 3 and SilverStone ALTA G1M will take just about any 4090, the only exception might be the galax HOF due to the dumb crown meme screen.

if you are water cooling with a custom block, you can fit a 4090 into any case you want as long as there is enough space for a radiator
