@TumbleGeorge
and have to upscale most things to be able to get playable framerates.
ignoring playing with mouse and/or low latency+120Hz for FPS and the like

your doing online shopping/browsing/banking on your console?
even if i just mention waste of energy, compared to most desktop/laptops..

@Neo_Morpheus
just so used to it (setup/config/use), and usually higher chance i can get one with a full block from a brand i like..

oh yeah, seen it over the years in forums like her or guru, but was main reason for me not to even recommend them when they were one tier better.

Console save much more than price only for graphic card. In fact save price of all internal and external parts of PC, include PC monitor. Also save via smaller power consumption via electricity bills.

But consoles are not computers, you can't do work on them, etc.

Patiently waited to see what the non-halo prices on this gen GPUs would be from nVidia/AMD and with these prices I have no issues with sitting out until next gen or the one after that. The number of outstanding games that can run well (120/144fps) on old hardware is enough that I won’t yield to shit pricing. If my 1070ti dies i’ll stick my GTX570 in, if that goes i have a couple 4870s lol. Only card thay has ever died on me though was a PNY 780ti.

With the American MSRP at $900, it's no wonder, really.

I told you guys and everyone; the RTX 4090's price is too high. We need to frown on expensive halo/flagship cards for this precise reason; it serves as the ceiling, and it pushes costs for the entire lineup upwards. By eliminating the Titan as the distant halo and raising the flagship spot to this new $1600 midpoint and pushing that product to mass production, Jensen found the ultimate money maker solution.

I feel bad enough having paid MSRP on my RTX 3090 2 years ago, and those were already under special circumstances with the market *just* about to blow up on crypto, Covid and all... but now? I just don't find it admissible, permissible, or anything other than utterly and thoroughly wasteful.

Everything sells right now because for the past 2 years a lot of cards were simply unobtainable by regular consumers, people have to buy something at some point. AMD and Nvidia know this.

I paid 1000 euro for the 7900 XT which is kind of shitty but considering that 1 year ago a 3080, which was slower, would go for 1500+ euro, it's alright. By the way those 3080s are like 900 euro now where I live, I don't know who's buying those to be honest.

They sell because the marketing machine is extremely effective and they are touting a massive leap in performance over the RTX 3090, which is still a very powerful graphics card. Sprinkle in some gated features to the new series, a middle finger to the existing owners, release an utterly garbage tech demo like Portal with RTX and add that to economic recovery, they're all going to be spending money on it, it's genius.

People are getting into debt to buy these things, just like the latest iPhone. I refuse.

lol, just because some ppl do, doesnt mean everyone.
enough ppl i know with the funds to get one, the games (incl VR) to make use of it.
just because i wont or cant, doesnt mean i will sour it for the ppl that can, the same way we would all have the next better house/car/vacation,
if we would make 10x more than we do now, doesnt mean all ppl are blindly buying stuff.

an associate of mine makes about 3K/day.
so if you would make that much, you still would buy a 4060 then (or nothing), just because companies are greedy and you "refuse"?
that's utter BS...

I guess that i consider myself lucky, because in around 30 years of dealing with GPUs, i never had any drivers issues with none of the GPUs i had.

My only issue, if you want to call it that, was when Nvidia decided that i needed a damned account just to have the privilege of their driver's notifying me that they had released new drivers.

Given its MSRP of $799 now, and 80% the performance of RTX 4080, this thing will end up as a direct Radeon RX 6950 XT 16 GB competitor.

The thing is that there is not yet any post 7900 Radeon, 7800 XT, which should replace the aging RX 6800 XT 16 GB already.

Which means that the overall AMD plan to price these cards will fail miserably.
There is literally no sense in this new pricing scheme - all new generation cards must calm down to more normal levels!

Consider also that some people get other things out of video games than you might. Immersion being one for sure, and sitting very close to a large high refresh rate 4k OLED is quanitifably more immersive than say a 24" 1080p monitor, and of course there VR. I know I derive a hec of a lot of entertainment value from experimenting and playing around with graphical features and technologies, tweaking the games and hardware themselves too. I'm not sure anyone is qualified to tell me that's not valid enjoyment (not that you are necessarily).
I'm not saying that. I know your experience can be enhanced by these things. All I'm saying is that they're extras, not necessities. If you've got a couple hundred (or thousand) bucks to spare on PC stuff, go for it. But if you don't, and you're still rocking a 1060 with no chance to upgrade in the near future, you still shouldn't feel bad. Just keep your old monitor, lower some settings, and enjoy. Computational power has been increasing a lot more rapidly than games' demands for that power (except for RT) in the last few years. There's nothing wrong with expensive tech. What is wrong is treating it as a must have.

Given its MSRP of $799 now, and 80% the performance of RTX 4080, this thing will end up as a direct Radeon RX 6950 XT 16 GB competitor.

Ebay prices don't really count, but I see what you mean. That's why I tend to say that last-gen is always a better deal than the newest shiny stuff, especially now.

But maybe some people enjoy pretty graphics. I personally got tired of GTA 5 but now that I have a 4K monitor and an RX 7900XT I've got into it again. It's really not that ugly of a game despite its age when you crank up the settings as high as they go :) Also MSFS2020 is far more enjoyable now that it's not a powerpoint presentation like it was on my old GPU at 4K. When I played at 1080P my old GPU was fine but the world and planes just weren't so beautiful and the immersion was lost.
Like above, I'm not saying that enjoying pretty 4K graphics is bad. It's just not a necessity. Taming one's expectations is just as much a route to a good gaming experience as buying expensive stuff is.

Disagreeing with NVIDIA's pricing structure doesn't mean I cannot afford one or am envious of these people. Your associate makes 3K a day? Good for him. Weird flex. And no, I wouldn't buy a 4060, I would do like I plan on doing: I'm buying a 7900 XTX instead.

I think nvidia will do $799 for the 4070 ti. and if it matches/beats a 7900 XT without DLSS being on, I mean that's not a horrible deal. especially considering it will support frame generation DLSS3.

something tells me it won't be able to beat a 7900 XT though for majority of games.

Nobody is souring the experience for anyone. But please, let me not worship you, or anyone else as a deity just because you wasted a shitload of cash on a piece of computer hardware. And please, let me not worship Nvidia and the 4090 for any reason. It's an overpriced and oversized piece of trash that eats way more power than any GPU should - that is my opinion, and I won't change it just to make some fancypants people feel better about themselves, and if I had a million GBP, I still wouldn't buy one because I don't need one. I don't even give a damn how fast it is.

With your analogy, everybody already has the fastest PC, car, etc. that they can afford, and all upgrades are just a matter of money, and nothing else. The world isn't so materialistic, believe it or not - it would be quite a disgusting place if it was. Being in touch with one's true needs and wants, and having some sense of what's worth buying and what isn't are still a thing.

As an example, I bought a Ryzen 9 5950X when it came out because I could. Then, a couple months later, I sold it because I didn't need it. I've been happy with 6 and 8 core CPUs ever since.

Ebay prices don't really count, but I see what you mean. That's why I tend to say that last-gen is always a better deal than the newest shiny stuff, especially now.

The last gen had historically been sold at very good discounts in order to clear the inventories. Now, things turned much worse. I fear that the stock will be depleted without any discounts for last gen, while the new lineup (which isn't even ready) will move up several price tiers.

I mean they charged 1200 euros for an RX 6950 XT back in August, now they charge 1400 euros for an RX 7900 XTX, while the former is moved a bit down to 860 euros but that had never been the true product positioning of that chip.

AMD needs to fix the wrong product positioning, otherwise the graphics market will simply die since no one will buy the cards.

I just love the way you hate NVIDIA. :)

To the OP: personally, I refuse to spend a grand or more on a graphics card as it's just obscene. It's effectively just a toy for playing games on and no way are they worth that kind of money. It's waaay better value to just get a console nowadays, especially as they don't depreciate in value so much and provide a really good experience nowadays.

Maybe that "depreciation of value" will not happen in the future since we are depleted with new shrinks, so that AMD and nvidia will use to provide 30-40% generational uplift with charging 60-70% more and beyond.

I am afraid that this is the end of this type of semiconductors.

Moore's indeed dead.

There are discounts, just not as great as we're used to seeing. All we can do is compare to the competition, unfortunately. One can argue that my 6750 XT was a bad deal for 450-ish GBP, and I would agree purely coming from the fact that I think even this is a bit too much for just a tool to play games on, but considering that the cheapest 3070 models start at 550, it really wasn't bad at all.

Adverse market conditions and feisty shareholders who demand returns in ASP, we're just in the leg of this last one. A semiconductor crash would be an amazing, and horrifying thing at the same time. End of the day, I think I will just have to do like I do with phones: I buy last year's model instead and continue to enjoy ultra-quality gaming, I guess? That is, if AMD abandons its relatively sane, up to 1K price structure.

I don't think anyone who bought an RX 7900 XTX is going to be gaming less hard or less beautifully than someone who purchased an RTX 4090, or 4080 for that matter. I'd sooner turn down antialiasing from 8 to 4x than spend another 1k on a GPU, and let me be real here chief - my 3090 practically runs almost all games that I have at 4K 60 fps at maximum settings, the ones that don't (latest AAAs) run OK if I enable DLSS on quality, so it's going to take a lot more than gating a few performance features, calling me poor, and being a snob for Jensen to sell me an upgrade.

The real problem is that the sub structures - for example up to 0.2-0.3K where most of the money and consumers' spendings are, don't actually see a progress.
Imagine a 2016 very popular GFX - Radeon RX 470 - costs 179$.

What can you buy today? Radeon RX 6400 - costs 159$ while offers 5-10% less performance.

For sure, the "up to 1K" structure will be temporary, next gen in 2 years it will be "up to 1.5K", then after 2 more years "up to 2K" and so on and so forth.

I don't think anyone who bought an RX 7900 XTX is going to be gaming less hard or less beautifully than someone who purchased an RTX 4090, or 4080 for that matter. Of course, I have always been a supporter of dialling down the settings, but a more powerful card means more years of use - Radeon RX 6400 for 2 years, Radeon RX 7900 XTX for 6 years, for example.

@Dr. Dro
never said anything to the contrary, about pricing.

no one buys a +300K car because its 10x better than one for 30K, nor is every of those buyers an ..(i leave that blank),
or that they buy that expensive item because of a commercial.
ignoring ppl that are saving up, to get something they wouldn't normally get..

"they sell because the marketing machine is extremely effective"
this has nothing to do with you disagreeing with Nvs price structure, just making it sound (to me) like everyone buying a 4090, is a moron...

@AusWolf
this world isn't so materialistic? lol.
look how many ppl have a phone that can do more than talk and text (thats the reason to have a phone, as in communication while mobile)?
how many have upgraded their device in the past 5/10/20y more than once in 3y?
all "want", not "need"...

While that is by no means what I meant, it's an interesting point you've brought up. I know at least four RTX 4090 owners that are bordering on tech illiterate, they bought it for the sole reason "it's the most expensive and supposedly fastest graphics product around", in fact one of these people still runs 16 GB of RAM...

Definitely a lot on shelves in Australia, unsold.

Relatively well stocked here in Brazil as well. All major e-commerce stores carry them. However, I do not think a 14-18K BRL product is selling particularly well.
