I'm willing to bet that the GPU having its own power supply will come before that.

At this point, we need a new method to connect discrete GPUs to CPUs. Maybe something that fits in above the motherboard?

Well the fans are 24-25 cm in width so I would say around 27-29 cm. Which makes it the shortest of the air-cooled ones?

The 4080 generally used less power in gaming and productivity workloads than the last generation 3080 while being faster, why did the 4080 have to come out with the same overbuilt 3 slot cooler as the 4090 and the AIB cards also using the same gigantic overbuilt coolers of the 4090 for the 4080...... The card can probably be cooled well and also remain quiet in a standard 2 slot card size smh

Asus: let's make a noctua GPU
Noctua: here's a couple of spare fans we had lying around
Asus: but these are standard thick case fans
Noctua: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Asus: 5 slots it is

The reason it's "5 slots" thicc and not 4.2 or 4.3 is because if it sticks into the 5th slot even a little, it makes that slot unusable, so whether it's 4.1 or 4.99, it blocks 5 slots.
It measures out at 4.04 slots

Are they getting any better performance with all that? 5 slots for a non-flagship GPU is a waste of time and money imho.
There was a time when the 80 series card was the flagship and the 90 was Titan for professional applications. You are falling for Nvidia's marketing strategy to increase profits.

I can understand this kind of monstrosity for a 4090 card, but 4080? Why? The price will be probably putting it too close to "cheaper" RTX 4090 models.
Noctua sells air coolers for over $100. For that money you could buy a nice 3x120 aio from other companies. With noctua you are paying a premium for the silence. If you buy a cheap 4090 it is going to sound like a blender, this 4080 is going to be absolutely silent because it has such a large cooler and large fans. If you would rather have the extra performance for that money instead of silence then Noctua is not for you. I think people are approaching this the wrong way, they are looking at the huge cooler as overclocking headroom and that they can maximize the performance of the 4080 with this overbuilt cooler, and then they come to the conclusion that it is a bad deal because you can just buy a cheap 4090 and get so much better performance, but this is the absolute wrong way to think about this card. The extra large cooler means you can lower your fan speed and be so much quieter for the same performance, it's noise reduction headroom not overclocking/performance headroom. No other card can do this, you need to have a large overbuilt cooler.

Noctua is probably going to release a 4090 later (remember last gen they launched a 3070 and later went up 1 tier with a 3080) and the price of that is going to be possibly as high as $2000. I think that Nvidia has fooled everyone with the 4090, they used to be called Titan cards and were marketed toward professional applications not gaming and no one cared about them or how loud they were because those things were in remote servers. Now in what is honestly genius rebranding everyone cares about the Titan and wants to buy one for gaming and their personal workstation and I bet most people buying it now really don't need that much performance or vram.

Even if it's exactly 4 slots thick it's actually at least 6 slots because no one who knows what they are doing is going to put something in the fifth slot and completely choke the card so the 0.04 slots or whatever really does not make a difference either way it's 6 slots.

IIRC, at least one, if not two, of the Kudan GPUs was 4.5 to 5 slots thick; their experimental total passively cooled monstrosity took up about 5 slots, and then one of their hybrid AIO GPUs; with a double waterblock that liquid-cooled the front and back, but still had a finstack on the front end to cool peripheral stuff, took up about 4.5 to 5 slots.

Ummm...got a feeling someone somewhere is going to invent an all in one heatsink/water cooling setup that will start about the same size and then work it's way down to 2.5 slot. No need for giant radiators, it's just all fused into one. That or boards will be designed with dedicated graphics only slots again with special mounting brackets for this type of thing. AGP revival time? Heh

If it was black I'd give it a look.

This ridiculous noctua colour scheme can get stuffed.
While I do agree with your statement, I do think these are the ONLYFANS that work with those new wooden cases.

I'm not falling for anything. Times have changed. And from your own statement "There was a time when the 80 series card was the flagship", it looks like you agree.

Titan series were north of $2,000 MSRP. 90 series for the time being is their new flagship and the performance proves it.

my opinion would be is to add 2 x 120 mm to have a smaller cooler not the other way around, still good card
