Hi,
Some would probably say a 3090 was a waste shame on you

Can definitely say that it was a HUGE upgrade. I went from not being able to break 60FPS at 4k to 120FPS.

Most of my games are GPU limited, I was thinking the new AMD platform should be a better upgrade than intel. Have you guys considered it?

Hi,

For me I was trying to not get Raptor Lake as I thought that they were killing that platform once Meter lake came out in 2023.

AMD with AM5 seems to be just making their new jump so it should be more upgradeable I would think no?

Hi,
I'm not in the market atm but amd is on my radar way more than intel is and x3d seems like the cats meow

Here guys thought I'd upload this. Got bored on me holidays.

i7 5960X OC vs i5 12600K Gaming Benchmarks - YouTube

Hes even using 1080p low preset to eliminate being GPU limited. RTX 3080 was used in these representative benchmarks. A 4080/90 I think would do similar % Numbers.

This example is running a 5960x but the 5820K @ 4.5Ghz would do extremely similar gaming. Quad channel memory on the X99 seems to be helping here.

At 4k ultra presets I dare say there would be diddly squat in it.

Happy New year.

I never got 4.6GHz stable on my 5960X it is a golden sample or just prime unstable. 4.5GHz max and it ate over 300W :D. After 4.4GHz it leaked current like a pig and turned into a supernova.

I see that has tweaked the crap out of it. Disabling speed step, all core max, disable all mitigations that cripple this old arch hard. Using win7 that isn't aware of any of those issues will return it to its former glory, new windows builds have some mitigations build in kernel and cannot be turned off and the CPU performs worse in gaming, you can turn off some of them with some tools, but not all of them.

But considering all things. Investing on X99 is not reasonable anymore.

Never said it was. Just giving an example where an X99 system can hold up if all you want is a GPU upgrade.

I was just explaining why this video is highly questionable especially as an ex 5960X owner.

Yep, no worries fair call but even if you could push 4.3/4.4 it wouldnt make much difference. I honestly think the video is legit. Only done 11 months ago and he knows to run 1080p low preset to eliminate GPU limitations.

I can run some benches.
Have not upgraded the rest yet but I was leaning to upgrade to the new AMF chip personally.

I went for it and upgraded the GPU and sold the 3090 so the 4090 was only a small upgrade price.
Currently;
5930k @ 4.4ghz cooled by a Silver Arrow
Asus Rampage V extreme x99
32gb G.skill (4x8)
4090

So far it's running things fine at 4k 120fps but haven't done newer games. Witcher def feels smoother than it did on my 3090 with RTX.

If it continues to all feel smooth I may qustopm upgrading but I am leaning on the new am5 series so I can hope I'm lucky with another setup mot needing to be upgraded for another few years.

Which games you guys want to see?

I can put my Riva tuner on and take some shots.

I can see which I have!

Apex legends hit 120fps maxed out prior so the 4090 doesn't do much there.

I can def test the new Witcher. I can also do tests with the 5930k at different clock speeds as I downclocked it from 4.4ghz to 4ghz as it somehow felt less stable last year.

Was personally curious with the 5960x but I'm not convinced it's money well spent over a new platform. The ASRock Taichi AM5 with 8 sata ports with the new x3d chip seems the best bang for the buck. Curious how it compares to the 13900k / 790 platform. I haven't gone AMD in more than a decade so slight wary on how stable this new platform is.

I for one embrace the death of SATA... in fact, a motherboard without SATA ports would be a selling point to me if the bandwidth used on this obsolete format could be put towards another NVMe drive.

Apex Legends is the one game that runs well on old X99 platforms, even my Xeon 4669 v3 has absolutely no problems with it, you need to test CPU heavy games. I would recommend Spider-Man remasters, Cyberpunk (as much as I hate it and consider to be a technical disaster), generally RT-heavy games that hammer the CPU, open world games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, AC Origins and Valhalla, Battlefield 5 multiplayer, MMOs like FF14 and WOW in realistic loads on actual populated game servers etc.

CPU-wise you can expect at an absolute maximum performance similar to what you would get out of a Ryzen 5 1600 out of the 5930K at 4 GHz, and that is being generous in most cases. They perform very much alike, and a R5 1600 is practically an office CPU ~6 years down the road. It's Haswell adapted to HEDT, in most games the old trope of the now-venerable, decade old i7-4770K/4790K CPU outperforming it should, in general, hold.

Well as it seems you have the money for a 4090, i would say not bother and go with some like Amd's 6800XT or nVidia's 3070\80 and see if you have enough to upgrade the rest of the system, AM5 mobo's are pricey but should keep options open for a CPU upgrade later a year or so from now.

Dr. Dro, I see your point about SATA. I still use SATA though so I don't want to see it die, (two of my three SSD's are SATA and my HDD is eSATA). Wouldn't an internal HDD or ODD be impossible without SATA?

High-speed USB docks that can fully saturate the SATA 3 bus are both inexpensive and commonly available nowadays. As an internal connector, I can safely bid SATA farewell. It's run its course, imho, just like the old parallel ATA (IDE) standard did. A lot less cable clutter, and much faster drives have replaced it.

Until the HDD is dead, SATA won't be. Also, M.2 is limited by the motherboard real estate it takes up - great for 1-2 drives, but 5 or 6 starts becoming an issue.

One other potential problem with M.2, are there any 4 TiB SSD's in the M.2 format? That don't cost > $1000?

Most ~4TB M.2 run in the vicinity of $400-600. 8TB are $1000-1400.

U.2 drives exist so do other next gen form factors. Sata can die.

There's also pcie cards with four or more M.2 slots.

Even mechanical hard drives are still faster on NVMe protocols.

Additional cores will do next to nothing for gaming performance and may actually decrease it. The issue is slow, old cores. His current setup is overclocked fairly hard, and higher core count won't guarantee as fast clockspeeds.
QFT, old&slow cores make me think server CPUs, LOL.
