What Dec 8th update? What driver is that? Adrenalin 22.11.2 was released around December 1st, and adrenalin 22.12.1 was around December 13th, so was the driver the 22.11.2 or 22.12.1 (only for RX 7900 cards). But he'd mentioned specifically December 8th update.....so, what gives?

I seriously doubt that, it's almost impossible to kill a card simply through software not at the vBIOS level.

Also you don't need galaxy sized brain power to realize that if you receive broken cards in January, most of those cards are going to run on drivers from December, duh, so that doesn't mean anything in particular.

if this driver caused trouble with a 6000 series GPU, then the user must have used a modded driver or installed via "forced have disk method".

Doesn't spell well for RX 6800/ RX 6900. Thanks God I haven't bought this garbage!

For now, we can advise users to not use the latest drivers for their cards as Buildzoid states that it won't be the first time that a GPU manufacturer would accidentally disable the thermal protection in a new driver release. Some users have also reported hearing aggressive coil whine on the newer drivers which wasn't there before.

Well I dont think Kris gives any conclusion in the video but just mention that the only common denominator between the faulty cards is the driver. Some times IT staf is lazy and just compile these drivers between models without looking them trough - so considering a missing thermal a possiblity - absolute something that could happend

Sounds like total bullshit to me, as far as I'm concerned you can only do that with a custom vbios.

Yeah if it were that easy to overwrite settings the LN2 crowd wouldnt have ever bothered with vBIOS mods. Smells a little....smelly.

Just as well i dont blindly update radeon drivers each time there is a release, I give it a few days to a week before heading down to AMDs reddit or reddit support page and just read through some of the comments regarding the latest drivers.

I probably dodged a lot of bullets that way. I would recommend that people do the same. A lot of people dont have issues and thats fair and best of luck to you. But at the same time there are quite a lot of folks that do. Especially me with constant blackscreening/shadows, stuttery/freezing videos and 'GPU recoveries' with chrome browsers when browsing sites like YT. -- there was some HW acceleration bug that Radeon software didnt like and the only real option was to change to a non-chromium browser or hack some of the settings in chrome to turn a HW acceleration based option off. Its made me regret my purchase a lot less after that.

It's weird that it is locally concentrated, meaning this could be a batch of cards run ragged from a local mining farm.

Also, MPT will allow you to break your card as such with voltage.

You don't have to turn HW acceleration off.

Go to chrome://flags -> ANGLE graphics backend -> choose D3D9. It fixed the stuttering for me.

Very happy that all I've done is under-volt my 6900XT. It may well be bullturds, but cracking a die? I didn't know that was possible?!

The only avenue which would allow this is to mod power play tables surely.
I've got 500+ watts into my Vega with this method.

But do note some died while idle.

now that's a pickle , wtaf.

If you've forced an update and your card goes bang, then that can only mean one thing. Ya silly.

Drivers could remove power limits, increase the voltage to the max, turn the fans off, etc... within the limits the vbios allow, could be worst if vbios allows crazy values, but there still would be protections. Could be made worse if the card is already problematic, improper mounting pressure, bad case, etc... Unlikely but not impossible.

Fortunately I run my card underclocked with a 240W power limit.

I still fail to see how, aside from maybe excessive heat, software could cause this kind of damage. I'd expect this from excessive mounting pressure or board flex.
