I believe the taxpayer money was meant for foundries.
So without R&D spending how are those foundries going to improve or what those foundries are going to be used for?

On a side note had to look up layoff news for Intel not at all surprised to find they also have massive layoff in works along with these cut in R&D spendings. CEO and management needs to take responsibility for bad times just like they boast of good times.

I don’t share these allegiances but, afaik, they weren’t planning on building in the US prior to CHIPs + new jobs

Apparently there are quite a few here that failed to actually read this article? Or the bazillion CHIPs act articles?

The R&D itself will be completed...IN OTHER FACILITIES. Don't worry, the Intel world isn't going to implode. Despite what many were hoping for lol. Deciding not to build the R&D facility and the CHIPs act, have nothing to do with each other...period end of story.

Oh the outrageous outrage at...iuno?

Wasn't Intel given a bunch of money for this to happen? Sounds like more corporate theft without consequence.
Objectively, the money they took from the government was meant to build fabs, not R&D centers. But canning R&D center may have an indirect impact to fab output, which I don't think is a priority to them now. They just want to build fabs that magically produce chips with little considerations about R&D, raw material and skilled labors.

Intel is dropping their R&D department? :wtf:

Like how?
Fund public universities' research facilities, companies don't care about innovation only money, but universities can focus on advancing technology plus they have the best "brains" and their leadership is less obtuse than the philistines executives in big companies. The IPs are filed but not sold, rather everyone can "rent" them. But I think this kind of system only works in some countries, either relatively democratic or more pragmatic authoritarian states.

So just going to keep leeching taxpayers money while Gelsinger keeps getting his absurd salary.
Running a multi-billion corporation requires multi-million dollars oversight.
As absurd as the discrepancy between the CEO's earnings and the regular worker seems, there are quite a few engineers and programmers that easily earn more than $1M/year, so there's that.
Being smart with a great pedigree in the IT industry brings you a lot of cash, as long as you can piece a few sentences together to sell yourself better.

No this that I know for chip's act, it covers factory construction and research&development* too. Even maybe the program budget is about the 50/50%
*Probably all the costs of this activity including the construction of buildings to house it.

Tim Cook is like that. Do you actually think that $35million is going to hurt his pocket-book when he is one of Apple's largest share holders?

Uh you should read the chips act again, you are incorrect. The R&D money goes to the NSF.

It also seeks to jump-start R&D and commercialization of leading-edge technologies, such as quantum computing, AI, clean energy, and nanotechnology, and create new regional high-tech hubs

Yeah, through public-private initiatives, like partnerships with universities and nonprofits… the money hasn’t even been allocated yet, it is nowhere near 50%, and has no relationship to the private IP of a corporation’s R&D

Look at the compensation then look at the sizes of both companies and what they achieved. :(

Now it's about how much it would affect them... right.

Nope, they were given money to build fabs. This was just an R&D center.
AFAIK no money has been given yet. It was only that the CHIPS act was passed and now the govt is goign to set up the process to how companies will go about applying to receive that.
and AFAIK that has not been set up yet. So all the people talking about thieves etc are wrong....

Why is Pat different?
Why is Cook different? Simple answer, they are paid certain amount for their services. What they do with that pay is THEIR business, not ours. Tim Cook taking a pay cut is virtue signaling and ego flexing, nothing more.
Bad analogy is bad.
Likewise, clueless statements are clueless.

I think it has more to do with shareholder satisfaction in his salary dropping from 95% to 64%, like Apple publicly announced and every outlet who covered the story has reported, but you can tell yourself whatever you like about virtues and clues :)

Incidentally, Apple didn’t engage in massive hiring sprees during the pandemic and has yet to announce any significant layoffs or cost-cutting measures, and is speculated to maintain yoy growth, while his performance approval remains steady, but I honestly don’t think there’s any correlation there

Ah, yes — Tim Cook, a beacon of virtue. “Well, business is great and the shareholders think I’m great, maybe I’ll take a pay cut while I may them more money.” That explains their performance relative to S&P trends for every other tech company. What a great guy
