gmail is a nice little program. I like how they got it going. The Apps though, horrid. Not as nice a fully functioning software suite.

Just a note, Gmail is closer to 3.5 GB than 3 GB.

You are currently using 200 MB (5%) of your 3407 MB.

Gmail = Big Brother

Gmail keeps all emails, deleted, junk, inbox,sent, etc. as database entries FOREVER. What does this mean to you? It means that after 180 days from when the email or file was created, the feds no longer refer to it as email but rather a database record. There is a big difference. "Emails" require warrants. Where as database records don't require anything more than a subpoenas and Google is more than happy to hand them over. Google couldn't even deny if they wanted to.

Think about that for all those that think they are cool using Google because it was new and different and against the man. They are the man!

I stopped liking GMail when they started saving search results without asking permission. Couple months back visited my GMail (don't use it that much) and there was literally every search I've made in google past 2 years (or something like that)..

Today logged in to Yahoo! and it popped some "Yahoo! Shortcuts" there in place of my mail, but it also had a link to options to disable it. That's how GMail should do it also, I know free mails are free and sometimes they force ads or new features, but they should do it big brotherly like.

As for using mail as storage space, gets you mail suspended in Yahoo!, so unlimited space or even a gigabyte is useless. I have plenty of space on my HDDs for that. Seems it's allowed in GMail and doubt it will ever go unlimited, or people will start using it as a backup place. As the space is not actually 3GB per user, it's way less, but as 99% of users only use some megabytes, the rest can use it full. Would be nice to try and fill the GMail storage space and stop all mail traffic =) 200000 users should do it (that would be 60MB real storage space for the 50M users) as I don't see them having more than 300TB of server space. Now where are the other 199999 peeps to try this out :p

You doubt they have over 300 TB? I don't...Google's servers almost definitely have exabytes or petabytes.

Well if one rack would hold 3TB of storage space that would be 100 racks. 1petabyte of server space would be 333 racks and 1exabyte 333333 racks. If one cabinet holds 20 racks that would be 5, 17 or 16666 cabinets just for hard drives. Not saying they couldn't have a petabyte of space, but imagine a room holding 16666 cabinets! And for what, standing there unused making heat/noise? btw, that 3TB server rack costs 1773€, 1exabyte of those would cost 591million euros :)

Anyways would be interesting to see pics from their server room.

The space seems like a larger issue than cost, I don't find google spending 1.2 billion on something to be out of he question.

That was the end of 2004, not 2006. Meaning they might be closer to 20+ PB.

Yeah, but we were talking about GMail here, not the whole google.com =) If GMail is 6% of total traffic (can't find the page now), then it might also be just 6% of the storage space. Still think my estimation isn't that far from the mail space :) But nice (crazy) amount of servers :D
