Thermalright Intros Socket AM5 Optimized Retention Module for its Legacy Coolers

Thermalright introduced the Ryzen Mounting System upgrade kit that lends support for Socket AM5 and AM4 to many of its legacy coolers, letting you orient them the correct way. There are two types of these upgrade kits, that support two different kinds of Thermalright's coolers. The TR-AM5-A kit is meant for TRUE Spirit 90 series, Archon IB-E X2 series, Silver Arrow ITX, TRUE Spirit 140 series, and TRUE Spirit 90 series. The TR-AM5-B kit, on the other hand, is meant for the Silver Arrow SB-E series, AXP-200 R, AXP-200 Macho, Archon SB-E, and Silver Arrow ITX-R. These kits aren't free, and when they go on sale later this month, they will be priced around $9.99.

They have had this page up for a while. I contacted them and asked if Macho Rev. B requires a mounting kit, since I find the page a little bit unclear, and they said it does, so I purchased it paying only for the postage and some toll, around eight euros total posted from China to Europe. What I received are just a couple of screws, so now I'm wondering what is the meaning of these new kits? I suppose there is no kit like this for Macho Rev. B, or is such needed for the best possible contact ("Macho" mentioned there in this article)?

On the whole, AM5 support for past coolers is kind of confusing to me. Still, if I can use my fine old cooler as opposed to having to resell it, then AM5 is the obvious choice for me. I haven't actually upgraded to AM5 yet and likely I'm not going to do this in a long time, but I thought that it wouldn't hurt to have the needed parts ready to fit the cooler, if it happens that they are not sold/available anymore at some point.

EDIT. I just checked if there even is an 'AXP-200 Macho' cooler and there is not. The referred cooler is a low profile one, called only 'AXP-200' or 'AXP-200 Muscle' as I understand it, so don't get confused by this error.

On the whole, AM5 support for past coolers is kind of confusing to me.

As I understand, AM5's hatch/locking mechanism bolts to the AM5 backplate, so
a) if the old cooler uses the two plastic hooks to mount it, it is OK
b) if it bolts onto/into the standard AMD AM4 backplate (like the stock Wraith Spire cooler does), it is OK
c) if it uses its own backplate, it is NOT OK and needs an upgraded mounting mechanism/method for AM5

I got sent the old version, not the updated one. Perhaps if I could have spoken the language and sent them an email, they couldve checked their stock for the updated one...

Hi Renq,

I speak the language and I also ordered the old version. In fact 4 kits of it, as I own 4 different Macho coolers (2xRev.A (BW), 1xRev.B and 1xRev.C) and the latest kit version could be used for AM5 compatibility with all of them.

The fact is that Proline had wrong description claiming AM5 compatibility and the description has been updated just today after my complaint.

In the summer I tried to install my Macho Rev B on AM5, but the screws the company sent me (also got those circled black parts) didn't fit the appropriate holes on the mounting frame. By making those holes just a tiny bit bigger the sent parts would have worked, but I actually sold the cooler with all the old and new parts. They offered to resend stuff and sent specific instructions, but it seems to me they were clueless about what kind of frame I have compared to whatever they have on their hands (likely an updated version or from a different cooler altogether), but hopefully they have figured it since then from my mails.

Currently I use SilentiumPC/Endorfy Fera 5, which has a nice, quite universal, mounting solution - can commend!
