Come on, guys. He doesn't need the top of the line hardware that just came out yesterday to handle some gaming. Why is he having trouble playing The Forest when I don't with a much lessor system? Something else is going on.

Most people recommend using this tool to see if there's something obvious causing a hold-up:

yeah if you guys want my literal exact specs down to the model numbers i can give it to you but if you read my original psot youd see that ive literally tried multiple motherboards and 2 sets of ram so i didnt think its that nessesary to pin down the exact parts but yeah i can give you the newegg listings if you want lol. im trying all the suggestions offered in this thread thus far though thanks for the ideas.

doing all this right now:

-VBS OFF
-->Windows search Core Isolation, Memory integrity OFF

-Device manager > USB> Disabled all 'allow computer to suspend to save power'

-FPS 3 below max nvidia control panel LATENCY ULTRA

- Playing around with memory shit, trying to figure out "how to increase bandwith and lower latency" dont even know what that means, googling it..

my current exact specs are

asrock b450m pro4 latest bios
ryzen 5600x latest chipset
gtx 1080 8gb latest drivers
Team T-FORCE VULCAN Z 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model TLZGD416G3200HC16CDC01 -- XMP on 3200mhz
corsair 600w power supply
WD_Black SN750 500gb NVME
Windows 11 home latest updates fresh install from like 1 month ago

keep in mind my GF has another ryzen 2600 system with a 5700xt gpu and i cant get solid 60hz with no stutters either so like what the fuck is ryzen just garbage or somthing? is getting solid 60fps impossible without huge random hiccups?

and you can say "He has low specs!" or whatever, but its actually not really that low, i can play pretty much every game 60fps high/ultra. and also ANY GAME, even games before 2015, i cant play without stutters. so "having too low specs" is kinda just bs?
and yeah if you read my otriginal post you can see i swapped multiple motheroards/CPU/ram/psu and i cant fix the problem SO I DONT REALLY THINK ITS HARDWARE --- OR MAYBE RYZEN JUST IS TOTAL SHIT AND I NEED TO STOP BUYING RYZEN????? I never semed to experience any of this issue back before I started using ryzen cpus... I thought the 2600 was the culprit so i bought 5600 hoping it would fix it Lol Jokes on me.

Maybe ill just try using Linux???????????????

Lately im trying to just play THE FOREST at solid 60hz without random huge stutters But nope lol every 40 seconds my screen freezes despite if i google steam forums everyone says it runs smooth for them Cool!

Yes, low specs compared to what is actually available.

5600x vs a 13600K, it's minced meat with a lot of gaming and benchmarking. And is also the reason I jumped ship in 2017/18, grabbed a 8700K and kicked the shit out of the first 3 generations of ryzen chips. Sadly it was time to make a choice. DDR5 was coming out.

Some hardware combinations might actually matter as well. There's a LOT of choices.

I would also assume each time you've swapped hardware, you tried installing windows fresh each time. Hot swapping doesn't come without issues, but it a single video card or the drive to entirely different system.

As mentioned, matter of perception.

I watched one video. The first one. It didn't like this was a very often occurrence.

Keep trying though. You'll eventually find a fix...

not sure how to use latencymon but thats what it shows on idle for a few mins

heaven benchmark. i visually saw a bunch of stutters despite it saying min fps 50.
this is on extreme preset/all highest settings 1080p

and ya sure, low spec compared to whats possible, but i cant even play 2009 games without stutter so lol something else going on i guess. i can try borrowing my gfs 5700xt see if AMD gpu works any better...guess i might as well try that...

like i said currently im just trying to play THE FOREST but every 40 seconds or so my whole screen freezes and its super annoying and ruins the immersion so wtf man i just wanna fix it

It's a video issue but I wouldn't suspect the graphics card or PSU. I'm more interested in "some gigabyte motherboard" because if it's a low end mobo the issue could be the VRMs deep frying with that 2600, back when those chips came out there were a lot of complaints about gigabyte motherboards in particular because they either had no VRM cooling or used a solid piece of metal rather than a proper heatsink.

If the card throttles or is faulty the games would run slower, crash or the PC would show a BSOD rather than freezing for 1 second.

What's the case?

i had the same issue on both gigabyte and asrock mobo. i posted my current specs on previous page
had two different cases (ive been troubleshooting this issue for so long i basically borrowed my gf's entire PC parts to see if anything could fix it, nope, but we both use Ryzen 2600 but recently i upgraded to 5600 to see if it would fix it.... first i thought it was my bad SSD, so i bought a nvme.. didnt fix it.. etc.. ...)

ill take a vid of the forest gameplay show you waht i mean ... either im gonna try LINUX see if anything is different or just try Intel cpu...

I didn't see this mentioned yet but are you actually running the games full screen? For example after I moved my games separating my work and game PC I was having a lot of problems with stutter in a few of my games until I realized they were not actually running full screen but borderless instead. Once I reconfigured them to run full screen they were butter smooth.

Also look at your monitor refresh rate. In windows mine would default to 30 even though it supported 60 and I had to change it.
Also I found games seem to do better for me when using Ryzen balance power plan or 1usmus ryzen power plan.

k just recorded a video showing perfectly what i mean. im so jaded bro this is impossible to fix. what the HELL causes this in every game? look at the top left graph. PERFECT frametime then BAM gigantic spike. ugh.

like nothing is even happening in the fking game im just walking around im literally not even touching the mouse im just holding W and randomly every 40 seconds random frametime spike freezing my whole screen lol? some expert PLZ help i wish linus tech tip would focus more on this kind of shit cuz this is just ruining pc gaming for me and its like impossible to diagnose apparently..

the last game i played The Division 2 did the EXACT same thing... i wil actually pay someone to ship me a working PC that doesnt fucking stutter NAME YOUR PRICE .. i bet its gonna be Intel cause ryzen seems garbo

Look im not trying to throw oil on this fire, but heres my recommendation:

If possible, please try and try out a different cpu sku/vendor in your local computer store. I recently had a 5600X which I changed to 12400F. On paper, the 5600X is the same as 12400F, if maybe 2-3% faster/slower depending on game. Most local hardware store, will be happy to A/B test on your own personal rig if you call and explain. Obviously this varies from country/region/availability of stores, but most local hardware stores are happy to do this where I live (example Pcdiy in vic). They might charge say 30$ for this, and offer you an hour or twos worth of time to test your own games and rig (they will usually have spare mobos and cpus laying around to test, call and ask)

Now from my anecdotal experience, the 12400F has been a much nicer experience for me. Once again, this might be due to Zen mobo combo/this and that, but in general ive had weird issues on 5600X. The avg fps was the same on the 5600X but I felt more "perceptible" stutters when gaming or emulating. Once again, I did not have 2-3 mobos and cases lying around to test if its my combination of hardware, but alder lake + msi b660 mobo have been flawless for me.

So might be worth checking that out instore before spending more money on anything else. I know it wasnt my monitor since I have a FO48U and 240hz alienware ips monitor, where I made the mistake of buying a high refresh rate panel to test if my oled was the issue with 5600X. Turns out, it was something else, which I never got to the bottom of with the ryzen (im suspecting it was the mobo).

I now also run Linux Garuda and Endevour OS (Arch) alongside Win11 on a seperate ssd, and steam is excellent on Linux. Dare I say, most games actually feel smoother on linux, but you lose 5% perf on average compared to windows. Gaming on windows is still just nicer with afterburner/apps/ease of use and no compat issues but its super easy to use balena etcher to make a live linux usb. I wont even go into what distro to pick, but I highly recommend giving linux a try before you go off testing cpus/gpus. Its actually a great experience on linux these days but still not perfect

Also you can resell the 5600x for excellent returns. So it wont be a bad idea to test in-person before you commit to anything. Curently pc gaming sucks with UE4/UE5 and most engine having shader comp/asset loading stutter. I havent played songs of the forest, but games like RDR2, GTA V, CSGO, Cyberpunk 2077, RE4 Remake (demo), GoW, Spiderman should have minimal to no stutter. Only a once off when loading new maps/assets. Those are good games to test stutter with if you doubt its not the hardware but software, but I recommend test some of these games if youre testing new parts in a store

My advice? - Sounds like a weird hardware issue. Pc gaming can be a great pleasure or immensely frustrating. I hate how modern games stutter and no amount of money can fix it (returnal, calisto, forbroken, hogwarts/literally any new title) but when PC gaming works, god does it work well.

The 2600 wasnt a bad cpu nor is the 5600, so hopefully you find a solution

Best of luck!

Here is something I've noticed about stutter though I haven't tested it as intensively on Nvidia GPUs as AMD ones:

The damn Afterburner or Adrenaline overlay causes stutter in a wide variety of games. Turn the data off and no stutter. Doesn't affect my 6800XT much but does a 6600XT, 6400 and 5600XT. I need to try my 1050Ti and 1080 more to see if it's a high-end vs low-end GPU thing or an overlay thing or an AMD vs Nvidia thing.

If you noticed the stutter before testing with the Afterburner overlay then obviously that's not the problem, but if you have AB on a lot (I used to), maybe try with it off. However I used my 1080 for years with AB on and would have been pissed if it constantly stuttered, so I kind of doubt this is the case. Worth trying though.

I thought there was a recent UEFI/BIOS update that fixed an issue with TPM causing stuttering. Do you know what UEFI/BIOS version your running? In particular the AGESA version?

yes. i am using 5.70 bios here. ive also disabled amd ftpm in bios

"Update AMD AM4 AGESA Combo V2 PI 1.2.0.7"

things ive tried since making op post

-CONTROL FLOW GUARD: Off
-Cap to 50 fps, doesnt matter
- turn off selective suspend on all USB device manager
- Disable VBS
- Use NVCP to limit your frame rate to 3 below max refresh rate, then set latency mode to ultra.
- No programs on in background, no browser discord, nothing. Steam friends offline too.
- Power saving stuff in the bios: such as c-states ASPM/pcie power-saving stuff disable it all
-unplug ethernet cable

TODO:

-try my gfs amd 5700xt

-someone said these two:

" - tune Ram Timings, Speed, and power settings (gear down, timings, TRFC lowering can help -- in general more ram bandwith and lower latency = exponentially less noticeable stutters and more consistent fps)

-someone also said

" Check your RAM tune too. https://github.com/integralfx/MemTestHelper/blob/oc-guide/DDR4 OC Guide.md"

I have that same motherboard although I don't game on it. There was a time I was having a non-gaming related stutter but I can't remember right now what I did to try and fix it.
Was running it with Ryzen 2700 but recently switch it to 3950x but before the switch I wasn't having any more system stutters for quite some time.
On that board I'm also running 5.70 UEFI/BIOS and specifically disable the serial port, PBO, and CSM, enable above 4g decoding and resizable bar.
I don't necessarily think these UEFI/BIOS settings will help you but I suppose it's something to try.
Also on this board I am running 1usmus Universal Power Plan.
I still happen to be running an older chipset driver 2.13.27.501 on this board too.

My memory configuration however is just DDR4-2666 ECC so I'm not running optimal speed for the CPU. You might try lowering your ram speed to DDR4-2666 with this board just to see what happens.

Did you check your Windows Event Viewer for WHEA errors when you were gaming?

yea still can see obvius stutters without and steam fps overlay drops from 60fps to 50fps. even though if i take off the fps cap i can easily run the game at 200fps.

if i cap the FPS at 30 using rtss, it will randomly drop from 30 to 20. its like no matter what FPS i have, it will just randomly drop frames for no fking reason.

OP,

I've done this mod on every system I've had, except my latest (which is actually surprising). This mod is known to fix stutters. Give it a go.
just tried it sadly no difference thanks tho

the test im doing:
launch The forest, load my save, just hold W and run in a direction, see if my screen randomly freezes for a moment. always stutters within a minute or two.

clean windows install maybe (if you have a spare drive; in case you don't want to blow up your current just [yet])
yea i want to test out a spare SSD i have laying around just install new windows and test linux too. kinda worried about unscrewing my NVME i dont like to leave my main drive in while im messing about with partitions incase i a ccidentally erase somthing. its ok to unscrew and take out nvme?

Yes just power off your PC first before removing the NVMe. Testing with a clean SSD windows install is a great idea. I don't know if this might be a windows 11 thing but you might want to try windows 10 21H2 and windows 11 just because you are having this very difficult issue and try to determine if it's a Windows 11 issue.

Something I just thought of is some NVMe have drivers specific for them. Samsung and Crucial for example. You might want to check for your situation if there are specific NVMe drivers for your brand of NVMe.

With the b450m board you are using I would
- Clean install OS
- Chipset drivers from AMD
- Asrock Realtek LAN and Audio drivers only
- Asrock UEFI tool if you like to use it
- NVMe driver if there is one available for the SSD your going to use
- Nvidia drivers for your card
- OS Updates (but NOT the optional drivers from Microsoft)
- 1usmus Universal Power Plan
- the game your going to test
- check Windows Event Viewer for errors/warnings if you get stutter

Not sure if it was mentioned already but you can try enabling Windows Game Mode

Probably already said but are all your temps good? VRM? Chipset? CPU?

tried looking at event viewer after the exact same of the stutter ,nothing in there.

yeah my temps are all good on the gpu and cpu like 30c below anything dangerous also my room is freezing and its the middle of winter its probably not heat related
guess ill start mucking around with windows formatting and linux stuff..

-tried unplugging all "usb" headers from my motherboard and only plugging in mouse and keyboard to the basic rear slot. didnt make any differernce.
-unplugged sound

Maybe there are some useful things in this thread:

hahaha i am actually in this thread.
this is my post in that thread

more things i tried

-msi afterburner force a consistent fan speed cause i read someone say fan curves can cause it - no change
- msi aftebrurner reduce memory clock -500 because i read some gpu is "error correcting" and too high mem clock can cause errors and make it skip -- no change.
-rivaturner fps cap off
in game vsync off
in game fps cap off
nvidia control panel Vsync on
Nvidia conrol panel Triple buffering on
-nvidia control panel "virtual reality prerender frames" no difference
-have an old 120gb ssd laying around, plugged it in and booted into it has windows 10 on it , installed the forest, same stutters.
-go into bios and reduce memory latency to lowest amount it lets me, 1860mhz or soemthing. no difference. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
-unplug 1 stick of ram only use 1 stick of 8gb ram no difference

ok wait look at this video i found.. at the 4:52 mark thats about the exact same kinda stutter i have... so is it just the game engine then? still thats big part of the probllem..its hard to tell when its just the shitty game engine, or if its your pc... but i basically have this problem in all games so its hard to say.
