I have seen people on youtube doing it without having a heatsink on the CPU and without having problems. I only did it for a short time.
They're dead then.

Another board for the 8800GTX to run on, a 965P-DS4 Rev 1.0 w/ Q9400 and 4GB worth of DDR2.

To whoever says 1.0 cannot run a Q9400 - Gigabyte was enough of a big dum-dum to use THE SAME BIOS for all 3 revisions of the board. I know this as the BIOS downloads for the 1.0 and 3.3 point to the exact same file - BIOS F12 for the rev 1.0 is the same as the 3.3 page.

Anyways, trying Vista SP2, again. This time it's Home Premium's turn, tho.

Speaking of cases... been wondering what to use for the dual-core 939 build.

20230321_003232.jpg

I feel like this KME/Keymouse CX-6059 should be a perfect fit. Whaddya think? By the way, don't let that DVD drive fool you - it's a faceplate-swapped SATA drive.

20230321_003238.jpg

This one is already populated - the Q9400 above, although with a less powerful PSU and a HD4850 512MB. The HDD is the SP2504C, although I might replace that for a 500GB Seagate Pipeline - it's less noisy.

20230321_003826.jpg

And finally, a small "overview" of what I hope will be my next projects. One is a "SFF" (as in microATX) Brisbane build w/ 4GB of RAM, and the other is a Cedar Mill w/ 2GB of RAM - the P5LD2 I have doesn't do anything else than Pentium 4 HT of the Prescott/Cedar Mill variety and Pentium D of the Smithfield/Presler variety (the Smithfield ones being on my "avoid at all possible costs" list).

I originally planned a Gigabyte mobo for the Cedar Mill - a GA-8I945PL-G (if my memory remembers the model correctly) but that one decided to die quietly - no POST, no beeps. Just fan spin and nothing else. Ah well, it wasn't much different in features from the P5LD2 anyways.

the 2nd case. looks sturdy. For the 1st one, seem there is a empty front panel FDD slot, have one here (of another case brand) too and it helps to keep the air flow going.

No that came with with the one in the photo Cooler Master which only cost me £5. on F.M.P:)Defnetly the place to buy stuff on there.:)That PSU works fine.:)Good review by the Aussie ,looks a good case for building in.:)I am going to take the 1155 out of and put Asus P5N 775 board in the there.I have so many cases now i will have to start building. The intel heatsink fan is noisy on the 1155 board. :(

@droid-I You mean the one without handle? That one is already populated with the Gigabyte 965P-DS4 I posted earlier, although with a less powerful 430W PSU and a HD4850 512MB - I currently run the 8800GTX on the 939 open bench, monitoring how the 8800GTX and the Raidmax RX-700AC unit fare. I can easily say Raidmax has greatly stepped their game after Corsair's roast on them - this 700AC managed to power a MSI Radeon R9 280x (which has an even more hungrier TDP than the 8800GTX )

The KME has had the floppy drive removed just a few hours ago - hence the free slot where the floppy cutout is. It's a Sony drive and a quite dusty one at that - not sure I might be able to get it in working order anytime soon.

^x4, Those s775 older CPU intel plastic "push button heats sink cooler locking", they are a bit fragile by now, just my experience, so might be a bit careful with them.

The screw based ones aren't very sturdy either - had at least two brackets crumble to pieces. The metal based brackets are hands down the best way to go.

^yes, plastic is not that flexible after years of usage in hot temp. around the CPU( or elsewhere for that matter).

I agree. Shitty thing is when have to tinker with some MB backside plate to fit some CPU heat sink.

off topic. One of my recent AM4 Ryzen builds, I just chose Akasa Performance Sunflower AMD Cooler. Though the metal screw Wraith was included with the CPU, this was easier, just clip it on.
And works well too.

Anyone remember SiS chipsets? If I remember right, they were actually faster with memory than Intel’s top offering at one time. Then intel basically shut the door on third party chipsets.

^Had a couple of SiS chipset boards back in the day, but for me it was a bit of misery to find right/working drivers, but that was Win XP times. Almost forgot they were in while AM2 was going.

IIRC the last Intel mobo that I know of bearing a SiS chipset is the P5SD2-VM, SiS 672. There's also an AM2 SiS mobo made by ASUS, the M2S-X.

Never seen a M2S-X board, but yes, I recall the audio was not bad on those older ones too.

A real bargain for me. does yes :) I can't believe someone would give something like that for free.o_OI will keep on looking on F.M.P. to see if I can get more bargains on there.:) All the stuff I have got on there has been good. The motherboard in that heavy old case did not work but the guy said as much. But the case came with a semi modular PSU that works fine:)The case was only £5.

Just tested my 1151 motherboard with E3 1246 V3 with 1070, Well I just tested it on a box., I am waiting for the I/O Shield from China before I can put it in a case. I just hope it comes it is taking time o_OIt says on the tracking it will come at a later date, but as long as it arrives and is the right one will be happy, that blue cooler looks cool and nice and quiet, unlike the Intel heatsink fan on my 1155 build.:( Had to test them so I can give feedback on eBay.Skewed fans beat :), those crap Intel plastic pin ones that come with the CPU.:(The first case I got free a couple of weeks ago is good for testing before it goes in a vase. :)

Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

Who thought such a compact board would hide so many features?

- ASUS M2NPV-VM
- Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (for now, I have a 5200 to swap in soon)
- Palit 8600GT Sonic+ 256MB w/SPDIF
- 500GB WD Scorpio Blue
- Spire SP-ATX-420WTN-PFC PSU (looks pretty good in quality, though my small nitpick with these is short cables...)
