Ooof, Nvidia have really locked down the 4070 so hard that these premium models offer next to nothing over the MSRP base models.

You can't really overclock these any further, and the base cards are already cool and quiet - so you're literally throwing Asus, MSI etc another $50 just to get a pointlessly larger card that's even more overkill than the already overkill coolers on the base-model cards. At 216W maximum, there's no need for a card to be this big. The Dual model reviewed yesterday is already crazy quiet.

I mean, if you want something that looks a bit more premium, or if you really want to pay a $50 RGBLED tax, then sure. But don't kid yourself that it's anything other than that.

How is this “faster than a 3080” as per your relative performance graphs? 3% faster at 1080, 1% at 1440, and 5% slower at 4k. It’s at best the same.

RTX 3080 can't do RTX Frame Generation, so it's way slower!

How is the coil whine at 100% load?

Other Asus cards for 40xx series have really bad reputation regarding that.

Superposition benchmark 1.1 really shows that coil whine noise on first scene.

1440p is the target audience for these cards. That's implied rather than explicitly defined, but I also agree with you to some extent - anything within 2.5% in either direction is basically within margin of error as far as I'm concerned. I wouldn't be able to detect a difference without running multiple test runs with measuring tools.

12GB is not enough for future proofing
some games already maxing out those 12GB at high details.
sure the optimisation might not be ideal, but this doesn't justify nvidia to put a bare minimum on a 600$ card

4070 is bad value even with the FE at $600 USD. Wouldn't expect a card that has a MSRP that's $50 higher to be any better value, especially with a meagre 1% gain in performance over the FE.

This topic is about the specific 4070 tuf model, not about if 4070s are worth it in general.

$50 premium over MSRP for an asus 3 fan card running way cooler and quieter than the FE sounds like a good deal to me.

If i couldn't buy a FE i would have tried to get this model instead. But in France you can't find the non oc tuf version, only the OC version for a crazy 880€.

So i'm glad i was able to get the FE instead at MSRP

If I was buying a 4070, it probably be this one.

The TUF Series is always a safe bet. You get what you pay for, not just extra bling bling & RGB like with other brands.

Dual Bios with different fan profiles, a well designed cooler that keeps temps lower & fan noise in check, and a pleasing design that doesn't scream gamer trash. Tbh. I like the Founders Edition design even more, but I would take this one for more silence in the room. Lower temps translates often also to better longevity, resale value is also pretty good with the TUF.

It would be interesting to see if more TDP would allow higher frequencies. Not worth it to void your warranty over this though, would have to be a purely "for science" thing

I'm wondering what room does nvidia give to AIBs for max TDP though. Their FE get the max 220W TDP, the asus got 216W while some other cards get only 200W. Dunno if it's by choice of design or if nvidia actually restricts AIB to go higher than X%

Nvidia interferes with and limits board partners an insane amount. They've all publicly complained about it and blamed Nvidia's interference in the past and it was one of the many reasons the CEO of EVGA told Jensen to f*** off, exiting the market rather than deal with any more of Nvidia's BS.

MSI seem to have agreed a 240W power limit with Nvidia based on the Gaming X Trio review. I would imagine that was one condition in exchange for something else - potentially allocation favours or similar behind-closed-door dealings. It's also possible that MSI are buying the "leaky" bins that need extra voltage to reach target clocks - resulting in more leeway from Nvidia on maximum allowed power limits to offset the less efficient silicon.

I like this, as the 4070 tuf got this great cooler for those who like low noise components.
With a slight undervolt and minor interventions to the fan curve, you could run the fans at ~700-800 RPM and keep the card under 65°C while gaming. That's insane!

I don't get this when looking at Noise Comparison for the 4070ti tuf vs 4070 tuf.

4070 TI TUF - 29.1 dBA at 1319 RPM
4070 TUF - 26.9 dBA at 1346 RPM

What's that all about? Are the fans slightly different? Or is it sample variance and the TI got a bad pair of fans?

@W1zzard what do You think about adding a 25dB check in Cooler Performance Comparison for GPUs that can handle such level? As hwcooling.net fan tests show, the noise performance hierarchy differs between low and high RPM, due to vibrations, motor noise, etc. We can see in Temperatures & Fan Noise section that good GPUs can easily pull off 1200 RPM+ at 25dB what is still a quite high RPM. 35dB with this measurement distance is nearing 2k RPM, so close to industrial levels, and extrapolating can lead to false conclusions about noise levels generated at lower RPM.
