No remorse here. I enjoy my Steam Deck. I think Ally will be great for the 9 people that will buy it.
What makes you think it will be 9?

You are right it might be lower. j/k Yeah, that's a little harsh. I hope it sells well. I like Asus hardware and I expect this to be a great portable gaming device. I'll just need to see reviews before making any judgement. I just wish they could have offered the lower end model with the same iGPU. I think the lower end model with the cut down iGPU is going to struggle.

Brutally good right? I was expecting 999$.
+1 I share the same BRUTAL PRICE and with the new AMD ZEN 4 7040 Phoenix with RDNA 3 and also AMD promised FSR 3.0 will enable a smoother overall gaming experience, and simultaneously this allows developers to focus more GPU time on visual quality. Latency reduction is a key focus area for FSR 3.0 - AMD has the gamer in mind, with high frame rates and the lowest achievable latency as basic requirements. The engineers are also aiming for a smooth upgrade path from titles that currently utilize version 2.0 of FSR.
It only remains to see 2.2lb laptops with the new AMD ZEN 4 7040 Phoenix with orange sticker.

I think this is a pretty cool device. Did not hear about it till this article. People complain about the price but not the portability.

I'd like to see how it performs out in the wild and how it compares to the steam deck.

I travel often and carry an ipad for movies and what not. But I dont play a lot of mobile games. But I could see this as a replacement and I could play PC games on it.

Maybe too good to be true, but if it is, it wont be for long. The days of giant tower PC's is slowly slipping away.

DAY ONE BUY FROM ME If it’s truly $700 but from all the rumors that been going around and that Best Buy Pic of it showing to be $700, it’s becoming more believable. So excited!!

No remorse here. I enjoy my Steam Deck. I think Ally will be great for the 9 people that will buy it.
Make that 10 baby!

Don't look at the alternatives then, other than the steam deck nothing is close to the value here what's your perception of what it should be?

I would not pay 700 for this when I only paid 399 for my steam deck. I know someone is going to reply to this with but the Ally hardware is better than the steam deck. Hardware is only as good as the software behind it and I don't have high hopes for this having good software. Valve is constantly updating my steam deck to make it better. It works great with emulators and other store fronts. The ally comes with windows which is another price hike for that license. If you want windows you can still load it on the steam deck. Proton has been fantastic on the Steam deck. Plus, we don't even know the battery life of the higher end 700 unit. It might only last an hour.
I think if I were to choose again, I would still choose the Steam Deck because of the software support and not quite confirmed better battery life. I don't see how the Ally is going to have better hardware including CPU, GPU, and a 120hz screen while being lighter without compromising heavily on battery life.

I think Ally will be great for the 9 people that will buy it.
I sincerely hope not. I hope the Ally sells at least as many units as the Steam Deck. I would like to see competition in the handheld market. I want there to be a handheld market at all. Next we might get an Alienware handheld.
BUT ... the Deck's hardware is inferior to run modern demanding games. Even at 1280x800, there's no way to get 60fps in CyberPunk or Dead Space, for example. Even on lowest settings. Even RDR2 struggles (yes I read the many Deck tweak guides online). Other Deck players are satisfied playing these games at 30FPS in combinations of low to high settings. I don't do 30fps. 60fps was bare minimum. 120 is optimal.
I'm a bit of a whore for 120+ fps on my desktop. Upgrading to a fast display was a night and day difference in fast paced FPS games. I don't think I can tell the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps on this tiny little 7 inch screen. I have not been playing AAA games on my Deck. I would rather play those on my PC. I use my deck primarily for small indie games, emulation, and other games that usually get me 6 to 8 hours of battery life. The Deck is indeed overkill for these games. I wasn't interested in playing Stardew Valley on my desktop. I wouldn't consider playing Vampire Survivors with MKB. Playing my old nintendo favorites again has been a lot of fun. I think these kinds of games are where handhelds excel. I personally think the Ally might miss the mark a bit because most AAA games aren't that good on a handheld. I still hope the Ally sells exceptionally well.

There is no point in discussing the price. It is real, according to the sense of recession and reduced desire to buy in the population, which the industry was able to sense (finally!) The markup is normal. This is a real price, not something inflated with a super-large, scalper markup margin

A real price seems cheap for any ROG product :D

Hm, maybe the 700$ price is a best buy exclusive deal? Would be a dick move if so.

They dropped the ball hard with RAM size. Make it a 1K$, but ship it with 32GB shared memory pool.

Also... the screen does not look promising really... it is meh by 2023 metrics.

The display can get exponentially more expensive if you go higher in terms or even brands like Sammy or LG, RAM or NAND on the other hand or only getting cheaper & much more quickly.

I cannot see why they could not utilize same screens from their ROG Phone lineups or the smaller 5.9inch Zenphone 9. They have them, they could order them even in larger batch, making it cheaper - AMOLED, 120Hz, HDR10+, 1100 nits peak. So WTF is this legacy crap in the ROG ALLY?

AMOLED is not as power efficient as LCD. I'd much rather spend the limited watts on the performance than the screen.

What? I will not even touch the topic. Two fans are neither good. I cannot see this thing as real Mobile platform. It as mobile as a ROG phone. You get tied to the wall AC outlet with a charger.

OLED screens use more power, are more expensive & still have possible issues with burn in ~ so that's a few reasons why at least for now they're not used here.

I would agree actually on the OLED part. But not really on the Sammy Super AMOLED variant. As long you have warranty you should not bother about burn in. After 5 years this thing will broken and slow either way to worry about it much. Even conservative Nintendo decided to go OLED, so while you have a point... it ain't that bad as it seems.

And more on the mobile part.

DUDES. Power tool makers have already solved your problems with really staying mobile. A real battery packpack :D

Can't beat the 1+ year old steam deck & a microSD in value, but still really good, specially if you want the extra performance

The cheap model doesn't make much sense tho, it's easily outperformed in gaming by other devices, including the steam deck, while being more expensive than the last one

Good specs, but 700 for this. Naah, better xbox series s / playstation 5 or computer.
But this is pretty much a console/computer/handheld all in one.

It's a consequence of using LPDDR5. Trade off power consumption and bandwidth for capacity and flexibility.

Are there any games that use more than 16GB's of RAM in 1080p? I thought it was pretty hard to use over 16 GB's of RAM unless 4k gaming.

16 GB of RAM on this should be fine, especially since its just 1080p120. I don't think many people would multi-task heavily as well. Usually you would just have one or two web browser tabs open for gaming tips/guides and whatever game you would be playing.]

While it is a "portable PC" like the Steam Deck, the form factor shows that you're just supposed to game on it.

The RAM is shared between GPU and CPU on top W11.

I would not call it a future proof investment.

That's just the thing, Atmos doesn't require anything. It's positional audio that gets decoded for as many speakers as can be detected. The magic is in the decoder, not the speakers.
That's in contrast to traditional surround, where if you have the sound set for 5.1, but missing the surround speakers, the surround channels get sent into the void.
In order to get real Atmos, the minimum amount of speakers are 5.1.2 (2 front, 2 back, 1 center, 1 sub, 2 ceiling), any lower amount of speakers is faking Atmos.
