Today we examine the EK-Quantum Impulse 120 D-RGB, a 120 mm fan that prioritizes aesthetics and RGB lighting with three lighting zones in the frame and hub alike. It uses a clever daisy-chaining system for cable management and provides standard connectors for increased fan and LED compatibility too.

Is the LED connection an LED standard 3 pin JST connection (like you'd get on every addressable LED strip that isn't branded by a PC company)? Or is it that 4 minus 1 equals 3 connector that I blame Asus for inventing and serves no purpose other than having to buy adapters to use generic led strips?

Hope they make white isolators for this, wouldn't mind throwing them in my white build, though I'm sure 9x of them is too rich for my blood

If only they had rgb leds back in Clark’s days….just imagine the potential!!!

All kidding aside. Is there a mutually agreed upon open standard or something for control?

Thank you for the review.

This is another expensive "pay for the logo/name and the cute looking lights" product.

I’m still waiting for the SoonTM Phase fans. For those it’d be interesting to see a higher RPM / max RPM radiator comparison. Who has the ultimate high performance radiator RGB fans for the niche watercooling OC enthusiast that wants it all (not counting slapping Halos onto Phanteks T30s or Noctua iPPC-3000s)?

pretty horrible for the price tbh and i have nothing against EK... been a customer for years. At the $30 price bracket , i see many led hotspots , clunky daisy chain connection (8 pin connector wtf!), average performance, and no "special" feature unlike their competitors- lian li has the locking mechanism, TT has the reversible blades, corsair has the 0 rpm feature etc etc. I dont see any reason to buy these over existing competing products but i wish them luck selling them. Maybe next iterations will address some of these shortcomings.

The 8-pin connector is for the 7 pins of RGB + PWM fans. PWM fan is 4 pins, ARGB is 3-pins, so you need 7 pins in a connector, hence the 8-pin connector w/ 1 pin missing. Honestly, this solution is pretty decent since it's only 1 connection for a daisy chain, but the output is to a standard 4-pin PWM fan + 3-pin ARGB header that you can plug into literally anything you want.

I think

i think you can have a much more elegant connection for again a $30 fan for example nzxt and TT.
You probably can, but you were implying having an 8-pin connector was somehow unnecessary.

Shoot sorry I was in the middle of editing my post . Yeah I agree with you that 8 pin likely is required. I was referring more to the way they went about doing it .

Still glad that the Vardar 120ER's I bought a couple of years ago are still holding up extremely well against some recent additions.
