This article: https://www.techspot.com/review/2387-ddr4-vs-ddr5/ indicates there can be significant improvements (i.e. double digit percentage increases) in both avg. FPS and min. FPS with DDR5-6000 over DDR4-3600 with the same CPU (at the same clocks) -- particularly in Far Cry 6. It's only maybe 4 or 5 titles that show a significant difference out of 40. I never realized Intel manufactured a CPU that could use either DDR4 or DDR5.

you will also need a CPU and GPU on par with the 12900k & RX 6900XT to see similar differences in those games

13700KF Msi Pro z690-A DDR4 2x16 gb b-die 4200cl14 Gear1 CR2t Cost 1\3 of a DDR5 set that matches performance, you need a good DDR5 Motherboard and RAM kit to match that.

CAS 14 at 4200Mhz.! Wow. Are you running 2x16GiB DIMMs? Or something even larger?
BTW, isn't the 1.6V V-DIMM kinda high? Or is it normal for DDR5?

That's DDR4 and not for Bdie the problem is you need to keep it under 40C or else it will go to shite. You would likely need to open loop your 4090 and get a much better case to run that high of volts in my 011 dynamic XL I can only keep my bdie under 40C at 1.45v so I am locked at 3800CL14 which for ryzen 5000 is fine.

I guess is you don't mind your pc sounding like a jet engine it could be possible in your case. Some kits are ok up to 50c but you may not get lucky and be stuck in the low 40s like I am with my kit.

I figured you where running it under water.
You kind a have to if you dont want a FAN blowing on them att pretty high speed, up to 1.6v works on air, above water is the way to go if want to daily that high vdimm\dram

Guessing you plan on upgrading the GPU.... Seems like a waste pushing memory that hard just to pair it with a 3080... Unless you are like the 1080p esport champ....

Assuming the VRM can handle it why not.

fine because you have a waterblock lol.
Yeah, mobo or cpu would bring up the white flagg long before you hurt 5WB ic's aka ddr4 b-die cooling is the first issue you run in to and second issue is for mobo too train with high vdimm

The main issue with the OP question is most people don't have a 13900k with really good DDR5/DDR4 kits and motherboards that support both to actually play around enough with them to see if it matters with a 4090.

For someone who doesn't want to invest a ton of time a 13900k with a decent 7200 kit or a 7800X3D with a decent 6000 kit is likely the best option.

"In gaming, which is more sensitive to memory timings than memory bandwidth, our DDR4-3600 configuration works even better, achieving FPS similar to DDR5-5600. The takeaway here is to focus on DDR4 unless you absolutely want to play with the new DDR5 tech. Motherboards are cheaper, too, and you can use the DDR4 memory you already have."

They're about the same thing, anyhow. I can't imagine going with much higher than the 13700K on ITX to be a good idea, Raptor seems to put out a lot of heat, at least my 13900KS does. It's manageable, but you'll want the kind of AIO or heatsink you will rarely if at all have on an ITX build.

Apparently, the 13th Gen chips (Raptor) perform significantly better with DDR5 while the 12th Gen (Alder) ones seem more or less equal, slightly biased towards DDR5. At least it's what I was told, and well, I decided to get the DDR5 memory anyway, since I built a rig around the almighty KS. I wonder if W1zz could retest that with a 13900K.

For someone who doesn't want to invest a ton of time a 13900k with a decent 7200 kit or a 7800X3D with a decent 6000 kit is likely the best option.

Feels like you're only realistically running 7200 on 1DPC boards, though. The very few Z690 XOC boards or the equally good stuff on Z790... Ouch... Still very happy with the 6400 on my board. It's quite snappy.

The configuration matters a lot. I don't think there are big differences with low-entry-mainstream video cards.
For a system build from zero, I recommend DDR5. If you have high-performance DDR4 memory, I don't think it's worth the extra expense for gaming.
I repeat: only if you don't plan on a very powerful, top video card.
