Microsoft is going to rewrite Windows 11 kernel code in Rust for better security and performance.

Microsoft is in the process of rewriting Windows' core libraries in Rust, security chief David Wetson said at the BlueHat conference. According to Wetson, the switch from C++ to Rust should improve memory security and performance of the operating system. According to Microsoft, about 70 percent of operating system vulnerabilities are bugs in the memory security of C and C++. A Windows version with Rust code in the kernel should be available in the 'coming weeks or months', says Wetson. According to him, 36,000 lines of code have already been rewritten in the Win32 gdi with Rust.

Rust is a programming language derived from C++, with similar syntax and performance. Rust is designed for speed, concurrency and security and is considered memory safe. This means that there is protection against external changes in the system memory. Rust was designed by a number of developers with ties to Mozilla, and has been voted the most loved programming language in the Stack Overflow Developer Survey every year since 2016.

I think the culprit posts here.
FYI this was intended as a joke but just sounds mean looking back at it (I was trying to jokingly imply the poster was the culprit). Did not intend it to sound that way, was meant to be good natured humor. This concludes my PSA.

DX10 was a Vista exclusive so certainly happened.

Windows 95/98 = OLD
Millennium = Good with tweaks applied
XP = GOOD
Vista = Good after SP2
Seven = BEST Windows EVER
Eight = Steamy poo
Ten = Polished poo
Eleven = Good with tweaks applied
Twelve = Does not exist. Pure rumor.

Eleven looks like fork of Ten, Twelve could be good.
Fixed a few things for you. No offense intended.

Windows 12 is ALL rumor. It does not exist, even in the dev boards at microsoft.

Looks like DirectX versions follow Windows GOOD/BAD notation.

DX9 XP
DX11 Se7en
DX13 could be integerated in the "rumored" Win12 new version, by all logical.

//

More interestingly, i thought about the question:

but where is Windows 9, the answer is related to a bug (what a surprise)...

... the bug, if you think more about it could be more an inconvenience if Windows 10 was listed as 1, so MS would have had to go directly to 20... eating all alphatinumericals before 2050/2100.

Well not a software engineer, but sounds promising.........maybe I will update from 10 to 11, once rust is out of beta...................

Why is it that with Win 11 when you right click on a file you also have to click on additional options to get to the menu where you can delete, copy or send to? Those 3 are the only three things I ever intend to do with a file. I imagine a lot of people use these three actions on a regular basis so why not put them in the right click drop down menu to begin with?

does anyone know if this will work on Windows 11? I used to use it back in the day, not sure if it is still applicable or not.

I turn this off with WinAero tweaker, which I just linked above for another item I use from there. Even with it turned off though there are a LOT of options when you right click a file with it turned off.. its very annoying, I wish it could just be like five things...

Short answer, no. They changed the firewall to unconditionally allow certain things regardless of user command and settings. This is not tin-hat crap, it's been tested.

Or you can do it with a single command:

Open windows command prompt as administrator.

reg.exe add "HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32" /f /ve

Restart File Explorer or your computer for the changes to take effect.

Either way does the same thing, this is the first thing i do on a windows 11 install :)

Yep. I just have a .reg file on a USB stick that I just double click for new builds. Was going to post, but random .reg files on the internet shouldn’t be encouraged. :)

Good to know. I just use WinAeroTweaker as it has a whole lot of other settings I use it to change as well.

What? Why?

That looks cool! Gonna have to try it out! Time to get out the testing laptop again...
When it comes to network(s)... i can't understand anything (even bluetooth, lol).

But if you guys know what you are doing, this firewall looks to be verry complete, it's perfect infact.

Just basic Infosec procedure. The same reason you shouldn't randomly double-click .exe files. I know I'm trustworthy, but no one should assume I am. W1zz even has .reg files blocked for upload.

For those interested, just copy/paste this into a blank text file, save, then change the file extension from .txt to .reg

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32]

.reg files are easily inspected. .exe files are not. Not sure what the problem is, but ok.

Stay offline looks like to be the only way to not be arrassed by MS, for online content use a mini-PC than uses low power, one that you don't care about driver version or even if it's signed :p .
