We all try to give the best advice we can, but at a certain point it's not productive to try and twist someone's arm. If it was a explosive gigabyte PSU sure, by all means, don't let him do it. But this, just chill out people.

I think pretty much everyone's already said how they feel about used tech the OP has enough information from both sides to make a decision at the end of the day it is his money and he will have to live with whatever decision he makes. Hopefully it works out awesome for him and the card last him however long he want's to use it.

Agree

There IS a real argument imho in 'having a big die GPU' even if its performance isn't the best bang/buck. For the coolness factor, having seen it in your own rig, etc. Highly emotion-based, but still relevant.

I would simply remove the dust very carefully, don't go any further. It could get too complicated if the pads disintegrate. Try to overclock the Vram by 10% and test again to make sure there is more juice left than the pure stock.

I would use the MX-2 paste in your case.

and yeah get damp, but not wet cloth and wipe down everything. if you know what you are doing open it up, and give it a good clean.

i cleaned a gtx 1070 recently with a lot of dust/dirt.

i have thermal paste to change it at home, but i don't have thermal PAD for memory in case they need to be changed and i'm afraid to open the card:(
I will go to change the paste and clean the dust, in specialized service for PC.I will pay for this operation to make sure everything is OK !

They are very resistant, it's really hard to destroy them and reusing them it's just fine.
Opening it's not that hard at all, just keep the screws labelled. I'm sure you can even find a video on YT for that card.
But it's your choice.

Chances are that the factory TIM is still fine. Get your self some canned air(if you can) or find a way to clean out all the dust as best you can and just enjoy. A little bit of dust here and there will not kill or even harm a card. You'll be fine.

Plug it in, update your drivers, enjoy! You've got a rockin card that should last you a few years yet!

They won't tear. I use the cheapest pad in universe and my temps are perfect.

I fear service fees. I opened a watch to change the battery. Couldn't find the LR626H batt. Went to repair shop to see if they have battery. He wanted to charge me 40 yuan for battery. He said opening the watch and changing batt is 50 yuan, but changing batt alone is 40 yuan (trying to say the most fee is about replacement part)

I bought two batteries online for 5 yuan.

That's it: do it yourself 2.5 yuan, repairman 40 yuan.

It's ok, you can take it to service though. Pads are not that tearable. And they work fine if they're teared but still clean and not losing huge chunks.

Congratulations on your new card. Mining cards are not bad. The hostility against miners is for the shortage they caused, but of course there are plenty of good affordable and functional mining cards out there.

My advice: hate miners, hit them with a baseball bat, but love and grab their cards :peace:

No they're not like chewing gums. They ooze some oil over time.
They're like weak rubber. Imagine you have an eraser and you cut it like chips with 1 mm thickness. They tear if you strech them, but they're not mushy and sticky like bubble gums.

As fragile as a thin layer of pencil eraser would be.

1. install the card and try it before you do anything to it
2. only then clean and do whatever or take to the service centre
3. it's your choice, i think it's a easy process anyone can do, like i said the worst part is keeping aware of the screws
4. be gentle opening it, thermal pads will be fine and they aren't that fragile at all

By the pictures it looks like there is more cat hair than dust. Kinda hard to get that stuff out.

Btw. if you open the card (or get it opened by a service shop) get some pictures of the RAM chips. Would be interesting if there is some visible discoloration from mining.

P.S.: the support bracket is most likely to prevent sagging of the GPU. So it's wise to install it.

still have, gtx 980, 1080, and 1660 6gb, all gddr5/x, no gddr6, no rtx, haha, and they all work just fine in games, can even play cyberpunk at comfortable levels, we can wait for 4060 ti 16gb, or 5060 ti 16gb, then we see.. my friend uses 1080 ti 11gb, modified the clocks, to make TGP lower, he is happy too, not thinking to upgrade anytime soon

I clean the card.It was much cat hair inside and dust...OMG i hate cats and dogs:roll:.I install the card in my case, all seems to be fine, and the card is working properly.I want to say the card is Huge, have 320mm lenght.During the day with 50% FAN active, i have 29 degree in idle and 56-60 degree in full load, and night i have 25.8-27 degree in idle and 53-57 in full load.
The problem is this card tend to be HOT than my old R9 Fury X.
This card have idle fan stop, and on the default mode,Fan start only when card reach 50 or 60 degree...I don 't understand why FAN doesn't start at 30 or 40 degree by default...I set FAN ACTIVE in Msi Afterburner to run always at 50-60%.For me 50 or 60 degree in idle is very DANGEROUS.I want to say another thing. This card must have very good air flow and big space and case like mine or much bigger and better. The seller had bad and small case with bad airflow, and temp always was higher .I don't understand people with small case and high-end card....nevermind
I am aware of this rtx 2080ti card not to break the slot of the motherboard....is very HEAVY.Another inconvenience,i can't install the card on the first PCi-E slot to benefit of x16 mode because i can't fit my tv tuner. This card occupy 3 slots...so for the moment is work on x8 mode:)
OFF.....

It's air cooled, of course it runs hotter than the Fury. Your case is horrible and you're blocking the card's air intake with it.

I have tested this few times in the past with cases I've had back then, it wasn't always the case when open cooler,
with a good case you can create an air tunnel effect with cooling fans and so a GPU can sometimes run cooler with a closed case in my experience.

This thread is getting a bit old but here are some of my observations. Personally, I've done some mining and I've come across a lot of used hardware. The only reason I ever started mining to begin with was to pay for more hardware.

In 2nd hand and miner speak 2 months = 6 months or longer. The guy with the 2080ti most likely bought it from a 2nd hand source and who knows how the Original Purchaser of the card treated it. Maybe the seller is being honest, maybe he isn't.... it's hard to tell. It's not hard to make a Graphics card look brand new. Miners are known to buy their cards from wherever they can get them.

Yes, miners undervolt the GPU core, but this is with Mining algorithms that favor Memory speed and bandwidth. People who mined Eth, Eth classic, Ergo, etc will have overclocked the VRAM. GDDR5 didn't run hot and it was common to find cards like the MSI Armor or Asus Strix that used coldplates that didn't cover the VRAM modules well.

Otherwise, 2 months of mining is nothing. If this damages the card then there was something wrong with the card to begin with.

Micron released faulty GDDR6 RAM modules until the end of 2018. These work fine for a while then begin to fail. Most 2080ti cards in the wild probably won't have these modules, but some early release versions will. Check out 'northwestrepair' on youtube to find out more.

When the 2017-2018 mining boom ended, I bought several 1080ti's at a discount. A couple of these were used in Long Beach, California. These were the EVGA SC2 models. I noticed the aluminum heatsinks had corrosion on them, so I assume the original owners mining operation was not too far away from the ocean. There are strange environmental things you have to look into as well.

The two 2080ti's you listed aren't top of the line models anyway. These are more like entry level versions. KFA2 and Galax/Galaxy are owned by Palit.

The 1080ti? You might as well look around for a 10GB RX 6700 or save up a bit more for the 6700xt. My brother was using the 1080ti for gaming at 4k, which worked great for a while, but he bought a couple games that were so demanding that he had to upscale from a lower resolution. He ended up buying an RX 6900xt. Now that the 1080ti is five to six years old, failure rates will become more common for old cards like this. That Gaming X 1080ti you're looking at may last another four years or another two.

He's already bought the card...
