i am thinking of buying a AM2+ MOTHERBO ARD can anyone tell me if a AM3 CPU will fit in there ?some sellers on eBay are saying AM2+ AM3?
I was under the impression one had less pin
And is AM2 Retro?
if not when does a PC become Retro?
In APPLE,s case they would say it is obsolete after seven years ,because it is no longer supported.
I have decided againt buing it,i have bought this instead well i have made an offer for it.The fan needs a jolly good clean ,all that dust.o_O I don,t know what CPU is in there, but i do have a E8600.I doubt if it has a Quad core in there.

Does anyone have any experience removing rock hard thermal paste from a northbridge heatsink? I don't want to scratch the heatsink to hell, would dipping it in alcohol overnight help or do I need more serious chemicals?
WD-40 ... and no, I'm not kidding. Guaranteed to dissolve thermal paste of any kind, just make sure to wipe it clean afterwards otherwise (once the CPU warms up due to its normal operation) it will smell terribly.

Edit
WD40 doing its "magic". And no, that terrible TIM application was NOT done by me but rather by someone I once knew.

That has potential! Needs some TLC and a few upgrades and you'll be golden! Keep the hard drive but get a 256GB SSD to go with it. A Geforce GTX 260 or GTX 460 would be a good pairing. A PCIe 1X USB3.0 card would be useful, but a critical thing, get a matching RAM stick. As shown, it's running single channel and that will be a bottleneck.

Yup, WD-40 will do the job too. It's a bit messier than IPA or GooGone, but works well.

Zippo lighter fluid also works best, even on stubborn chipset heatsinks - I've cleaned a lot of sticky glue-like compound off 865PE chipsets with it.

All AM3 CPU-s support AM2+ mobos with bios update, however slower HT link speed + DDR2 ram speeds have some minor negative effect on your overall performance. Also none of the AM3+ CPU-s will work on the same board, because those processors don't have ddr2 IMC in them anymore! Any decent S775 mainstream motherboard + E8600 will beat your AM3 cpu tho, so I don't recommend to invest in AM2 platform! Weak boards & chipsets won't allow any decent OC with Quad core CPU-s anyway!

Alright, been really on the curb lately due to life and bachelor exam getting in the way...

Anyways, salvaged this front panel to put on a case I already have most of the parts on (JNC/Deer case that's very swappable if you ask me.).

Ideas for a build?

Here are my choices so far:

- office:
GB M68MT-S2P (w/FX support) + Athlon X2 250 + HD3450
- low end game
GB H55M-USB3 + i3 540 + either a 8400GS, 8500GT or 9400GT
- mid end game
P5WD2 Premium + Pentium D 930 + 7800GT
MSI K9N Neo v2 + A64 x2 AM2 + 7900GTX
- high end
GB P55A-UD3 + i7 870 + HD7870
GB EX58-UD5R + i7 920 + 9800GT
ASRock 970 Extreme3 + FX 8300 Vishera + HD7950

Framework. :)
We’re excited to share our next major product category, a high-performance 16” notebook, the Framework Laptop 16. Not only does the Framework Laptop 16 carry forward all of the same design philosophy around upgrade, repair, and customization from the Framework Laptop 13 at a substantially higher performance point, but it also brings in two new module ecosystems: a fully reconfigurable input deck and modular, upgradeable graphics. This enables an incredible range of use cases and deep personalization for gamers, creators, engineers, and more. We’ll be sharing full specifications, pricing, and availability when we open pre-orders on the Framework Laptop 16 this spring, ahead of shipments in late 2023. [Edit: We've updated this to Summer 2023, and we've kicked off a series of Deep Dives detailing each subsystem in the Framework Laptop 16.] For more updates on our Framework Laptop 16 development journey, you can sign up for our newsletter. What we’re releasing today is a preview to let developers get started with our open source design documentation.

Not in home right now, but I made a single-slot 6800 Ultra by taking the cooler and I/O shield from a 7800 GT. I'll post pics when I get home :)

Also just now realized that why the hell I have a 560 Ti on my XP rig when I have a GTX 660 3GB as well..

Though I have also a HD 7970, but as it's a rare Asus Matrix one, I rather just keep it in its original box and not use it.

I did look that up and saw all that stuff. And i was checking all the Cpu,s in my price range which was max £15.And checking them against either my E8600 or a Q6600 like you say they walk all over the AMD ones The only one i could see that could was the Phenom II X4 965 which the cheapest price is £18.50
That is 42% better than the Q6600 Game debate.and 24% better than q9400.The 965 is on this board

MINOR ISSUE@ ASUS M4A785T-M AM3 HDMI MATX AMD Motherboard +Phenom II X4 965 CPU if it was not for *Minor issue*damaged USB port.

£35 if it was not for that damaged USB i would have bought it at that price.Or is that worth it at that price? o_OMind you it is only one usb port.

Is it worth it should i go for it?o_O In working order. The board comes with quad core Phenom II X 965 PROCESSOR, cooler and I/O shield.

Not for 35quid. 20? Yeah ok, assuming the rest of the board works fine. You can always desolder the pins on the broken port and do without.

You shouldn't buy that board in this condition. BTW there are cheap FM1/FM2 mobos with cheap Quad core Athlon II X4 651/740/750K CPU-s (Not APU-s!) for WinXP/Win7 dual boot with USB3.0 support. With this platform you can have roughly Core 2 quad performance per clock with better node (32nm) and ram support + SATA3 & also don't need some overpriced AM3+ board for decent overclock either. Actually I had a spare quality MSI FM2 ITX board, with 2X4GB 1866Mhz ram it's fine, even for Win10 with dGPU. Also many ITX/Micro-ATX board FM1 boards have integrated HD64xx/65xx graphics, I can upload some pics if you are interested.:D

If someone has treated the USB port like that whats the rest of it like?It does not give you much confedence to buy ir.
Someone did mention about the settings on a eBay forum when i looked it up.

I see someone is selling a PC with Asrock N68C-S3 UCC with AMD Athlon II X4 640 4gb ram
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler
Standard PSU included. for £30.I know it is a AM3 the cheapest i could get the board on eBay is £28.Seems like a good deal to me. :)
Game debate 640 same performance as Q9550
Mind you i just got a q9400 yesterday for my 775 board. 640. v q9400. game debate 640 11% better than the q9400.I wish i had waited before i got the q9400 that was £9.Is FM2 better than AM3?

I have put a cancelation of my order for the q9400.As i am thinking of either buying that PC or buying a FM2 Board. As i mentioned i all ready have a e8600 cpu for the 775 i bought last week.It has only a e6400 in it.And could put that money towards a FM2 board. It is a shame the Heatsink fans are not much less than the boards.o_O

There was a vintage computer/console/cpu/cards exhibition in Hungary - Füle.

If anyone interested can take a 3d virtual tour.

Cool it looks interesting.I have never been to one of those Vintage computer exhibitions. o_O

Good decision!:toast: Personally I recommend the FM1 platform if you don't need FM2 IGP-s for work, but it's entirely up to you. IPC wise the Llano platform is superior (6% stronger than any AM3+ quad core), plus you can get away with cheaper ddr3 kits.

The cheaper the better for me. :)
ASRock N68C-S UCC on eBay some people say that is a AM2 and others say AM3?
Arctic Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler i looked the cooler up that looks good.:)
Thanks for your advice once again. It rules this crappy PC out.Desktop PC Barebones System - AMD Athlon II X4 640 3.0 GHz Quad Core. 4GB Ram £30 i don,t know why he has put tape on those PC slots at the back. o_O

At least i will be able to put the E8600 to good use :) i know it is not as good as the q9400 but as i said earlier the £9 is better spent as money towards a FM2 board and the fact £9 would have been half the price i paid for the 775 board .As regards FM1 boards. there are not that many on eBay.

No i am not after all your info on the subject.:) I take it that is why some say AM3o_O I am thinking of getting this one £25 make an offer.

ASRock FM2A75M-DGS AMD A4-5400 + 4GB RAM

All though it shows in the picture it has a heatsink fan he does not mention it.

ASROCK FM2 MOTHERBOARD

+ AMD A4 5400 CPU

4GB RAM

+ BACKPLATE

I have got in touch with the seller but i take it is does not with the Heatsink fan.

At that price i would be surprised if it did.

AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad Core Processor Socket FM2 100W CPU. £9
I would get this one i am a bit worried that it is 100w though. o_O The 750k more expensive.o_OAny other ones you recommend for that board?

I'm considering getting a X800GTO 16 pipeline version from Powercolor for a bit less than 20 bucks. From what I've gathered online, cards labeled "16 pipelines" can still be either R480 or R423, correct? Is there any preferred core to get? Can GPUz correctly distinguish these two variants or would a disassembly be necessary to determine the version?

All AM3 CPU-s support AM2+ mobos with bios update, however slower HT link speed + DDR2 ram speeds have some minor negative effect on your overall performance. Also none of the AM3+ CPU-s will work on the same board, because those processors don't have ddr2 IMC in them anymore! Any decent S775 mainstream motherboard + E8600 will beat your AM3 cpu tho, so I don't recommend to invest in AM2 platform! Weak boards & chipsets won't allow any decent OC with Quad core CPU-s anyway!

*Replaced CPU ON A 775 Motherboard now it is not working.*I can.t put these two photos on there as my camera needs charging.I have put the CPU the right way in?I can,t see any bent pins 0709.0708 CPU in the board.

Then it's decent value I was not sure about that.
Maybe some kind of bios error? I don't see any bent pins either!

I have just seen this on F.M.P FOR £20? o_OThat has to be a con at that price.

FIY ebay prices are not always accurate, plus the price range can be wild too (but you can be lucky sometimes). Nowdays I'm not sure how many guys/gals wants some cheap AM3+ stuff in the UK/USA, but at this price it's highly suspicios. You can find many decent AM3+ mobos for 15-20 pounds, but in my opinion it"s not worth your time, even with the best FX cpus the platform will be inefficient & weak. Can I ask you what is your spending limit on this project?
