Thanks mate.

I only wish you had a RDNA card now :D How fast are those at this job.

That thing ate over 10GB of VRAM?

I suspect that has more to do with however Lightroom does garbage collection for data resident in VRAM. In the JVM, it's very common to see high memory usage after an expensive task but not see that memory get freed up until GC has a reason to run as it does take computational power to do so and when it runs and for how long is highly dependent on the implementation.

One of these days I'll stop being cheap and invest in Lightroom. I'm that pleb that uses Apple Photos and GIMP.

I'm not sure about the VRAM, let me check that again with everything else closed. Paused video playback etc could have been involved.

edit: the more images loaded the more it used. The RAW files from my S22U are unsupported, so i cant test more.

Edit:
Idle with edge: 4.8% VRAM used.
LR active, 20% VRAM used.
Denoising single 24MB file, 28%

so 2GB VRAM for a 24MB file?
Lot of overhead just for being open with previews?

I just poked around it. While doing casual edits(136 ARW files open) it peaks over 10GB of VRAM usage and it stays there. (Bye Bye 8GB cards even in adobe suite). It is a serious consideration actually. As AI assisted plugins should be more common with time... so even for productivity work... low VRAM cards are a no go... maybe I am wrong and LR just eats anything.

It's going to use as much as it can to do things faster, doesnt mean it cant free some of that up when actually processing - in that case, it'd be the speed of system RAM/storage to the GPU as the limit rather than the VRAM speed

So an 8GB GPU may run out of VRAM, but as far as that being a performance issue it's not like gaming where that matters if it stalls for a few milliseconds to load more data in

Like I said earlier, it probably has to do with how Lightroom does GC. It probably doesn't need all of that to be running, just that it hasn't cleaned it up from everything else it has done up to that point. The JVM's GC works in a very similar way.

The curious warbler. Still waiting on an ID for the exact subspecies.

I have to laugh. That's a warbler? Man. US birds are so much more colourful. In the UK, the default colour is brown or grey. This is the only warbler I know:

Yeah, that in particular is a American Yellow Warbler. There are a lot of different subspecies as well and they all look a little different. The colorful birds are the best eye candy. Tree Swallows are another great example. This one isn't as sharp as I would like, but these are pretty small birds and a bit of the skittish side. I love the combination of blue, black and white on this bird. Definitely a pretty one.

I'm about 95% certain that is a Heron, but I'm not familiar with this subspecies. Is this on the Indian subcontinent? I think this guy (a Great Blue Heron,) is probably a distant cousin.

The urban bird bath. A puddle on a shed roof.

The wings are distorted on the starling due to the 'rolling' electric shutter.

Just a little question for the photographers here :
do you use a monopod / tripod during telephoto session or you're using bare hands ?

I use a tripod on low shutter speeds relative to focal length, but usually only for scenery, still life, or landscape. For moving objects, my shutter speed is 800+, so tripod not as useful. That, and my lens is quite light considering it's range.

Thanks for your answer !
Can I ask what head do you use ?
The Sigma 150-600 is quite heavy, i want to use it with a monopod, like a third arm ... i've a "ball" head (dunno the english word, here is a "rotule" ball), but it's too light for the lenses and the DSLR ...
I'm asking advice for what could be the best option ..
