Just a little question for the photographers here :
do you use a monopod / tripod during telephoto session or you're using bare hands ?

bare hands(arms more accurate). My tripods arnt rated for that much weight. Plus all my pics are taken from a small boat thats rocking quite a bit. lol.

I just make a triangle with the elbow on my chest while the lens rests on my hand. Use the right to angle and shoot. Hips to swivel around.

made me sore the first few times. but body gets used to the weight quickly

I rarely do tripods, despite having them.

I usually improvise or just sacrifice the ISO on digitals. On film I just brute force F1.4 and call it a night.

For birds bare hands only. Can't really get the flying ones otherwise. My lens is a bit lighter than the 150-600 but the chunky ass body probably evens things out.

Bees also bare hands only, way too close for tripod.

I am surprised they don't make "gunstock" attachments for cameras. Seems like it would be a decent way to get a lot more stability out of a handheld camera.

The firearms industry has more experience than the camera industry in handheld stability and ergonomics.

Edit: I was wrong.

It's a different style of shooting. You often rotate a camera 90 degrees. A shoulder stock would become a hindrance. I'd argue the stock is to stabilise the gun on firing, there is no recoil on a camera. If you shoot without a tripod/monopod, it's for the portability. Having a stock on the camera would reduce that (as well as make it cumbersome for a bag). A tripod is the only real way to eliminate the inherent vibration in a human operator (or use a timer and set it on a solid surface).

True, it is more of a middle ground. de.das.dude has a very uncomfortable shooting position (I have tried it), which a stock would make much more ergonomic.

3 points of contact and a way to keep tension against yourself would help my freehand shooting a lot.

Ah. I have one hand on barrel, one hand grip, and the eyepiece against my face. I literally use my head.

I guess that one advantage of the RF 100-400 is that it is stupid lightweight. It's only 1.4 lbs or 635g. The RF 100-500 is over twice as much as that without the tripod foot at 3lbs or 1,365g. The Sigma is definitely a honker at almost ~4.4lbs or 2kg. For as slow as the 100-400 is, it makes for a very portable lens for the focal length.

I usually do what @the54thvoid does, except I mix that with a little bit of what @de.das.dude does. My main goal is to keep my arms close together and against my chest for supporting the camera and lens. If my arms aren't against my chest, it's up to my muscle control to steady the camera which usually doesn't work well. If I have a solid object, I'll sometimes rest the hand on the lens on said object. Simon DeEntremont has suggested in some videos that he'll use his boot or anything that's steady. Duade Paton has this nifty contraption that's almost like a tripod except it's like a bowl, so you can get real close to the ground.

Either way, the I think the main takeaway is that you should hold it with whatever gives you the most stability without sacrificing ergonomics and that a tripod is a must for slow shutter speeds.

It might seem obvious, but I'm going to state it anyways. Tripods steady the camera, not your subject. Sometimes there is no replacement for a faster shutter speed. On the other hand, a long shutter speed with a properly secured camera can have some fun little effects. Last August when I was in London, I took this shot in Trafalgar Square using a stone wall as a support for the camera. So everything that's still is pretty sharp and anything in motion has a motion blur, which looks pretty cool with the busses and cars. This is a favorite picture of mine. I may have uploaded it in the past, but it's a good example given the discussion.

im in a bit of decision making dilemma, currently i'm using a gopro and iphone for video and photo during family trips because of my 3 years old.
i have got a sony a6000 which i rarely use nowadays and the battery is pretty much shot (9 years old), some of my dials are hard to push and turn (i think some fine sand got stuck in them)

since my kiddo is older now and more manageable im thinking of using a proper camera again,
1. keep using gopro/iphone
2. change battery on the a6000 and call it a day?
3. upgrade to the a6700 since i have two lenses ready to go...

2. change battery on the a6000 and call it a day?

1. Nobody can answer you that.

2. NP-FW50 is only ~1000mAh, you cannot do anything about it, size is not enough for 8.4V. You just carry 3 or 4 of them. Use a separate charging cradle for them.

3. If those are crop lenses, okay. Will it differ a lot from the original a6000? Actually not that much IQ wise, depends on your glass really. a6700 just has more resolution much better AF capabilities and faster sensor readout, if you care for video works.

What, no birds?

No, but it's a flying Canadian at the Glasgow UCI BMX trials. Jeffrey Whaley.

Of note, I don't know what idiot thought to host the BMX trials outside in Scotland. Just a few drops of rain and the park has to shut. Our Summers are notoriously damp, even worse with the gulfstream slipping south this year. We've got plenty of indoor arenas that could easily work, so whoever planned this bit needs their asses sacked. Final is due in an hour, and the rain is on again. :shadedshu:

I think we kind of where doing that. It has been done now, but i did kinda like it like that, so did the grand kids, they could fall on it without hurting themselves.

You have to be at at least 1/1000s for those shots, yeah? I wanted to go looking for birds, but my in-laws invited us up to the lake house... well, I should say new lake house. They have been looking for something on the water for 40 years and they finally got a cute little 500 sq/ft (~50 sq/meters,) place right on the water. I wanted to do some astro, but that late in the day I was too loaded with alcohol to drive to the other house. All I have to say is that I love New Hampshire.

This is 39mm (with my 24-105 ƒ4,) @ ƒ11, ISO 100, 1/200s on my cheap little EOS RP. I scaled it down to a max of 5000px wide to keep TPU happy.

Edit: You can blame Canada for the haze. That's our region on a good day with those fires going on. I say that in the most loving way to our neighbors in the north. I know it's not something they can control.

Shot taken on my Sony a6000 I couldn’t take much shots because I have time limit when you have a 3 year old around and they are priority snaps :) but I’m happy with how this turned out

I'm a little bummed that I didn't have a chance to stop the camera down to say, ƒ5.6 for the DoF, but either way, I appreciate the bee photobombing the shot. This is cropped just below 5k pixels, so I uploaded the full resolution shot. This was at 105mm, ƒ4, ISO 100, 1/1250s with the RP as always. I love it when it's bright and sunny outside so I can get away with ISO 100 and a nice quick shutter speed.

Very poor fox pic.

ISO1600 @ 1/1250sec @800mm equiv

Gloomy sky, this is a close crop. Low detail but otherwise a strange looking composure. Looks exotic but it's near the river Clyde in Glasgow (technically a nature reserve in Motherwell).
