Personally I don't think people buying $500 graphics cards are gaming at 60Hz. If they are, then it's a 1440p card at best, and unsuitable for 4K IMO.

If you have a high-refresh display like most gamers do these days, it's only matching the display capabilites in older games and esports. Here's the kicker - if you are only playing older games and esports, you don't need a $500 graphics card.
I don't know what "most gamers" have (I hate generalisations), but I agree that casuals (like myself) don't need a $500 GPU.

No it doesn't depend where you look, you just cherry-picked. I can find a game where the 4070ti is similar or better than the XTX. Doesn't mean much. The XT certainly does not rival the 4080,not in raster or anything else for that matter.
Of course, it was part tongue in cheek. But still - its an interesting development given the engine the game runs on.

Unfortunately for me I'm not a casual... i still fancy the energy efficient 1-peg down 4080 but won't shift a shilling over 800 quid for it. Unexpectedly this time around im actually content with putting myself in this sort of standoff. The 1080 TI was expensive, the 2080 TI was expensive and on both occasions i conceded. If the 4080 was also £700-£800 "expensive" i would have bagged one in a heart beat but x80 is no longer expensive... its DAY LIGHT ROBBERY and the police is nowhere to be seen lol

Come what may, ain't gonna splash north of £800 (it is the law!!)

My limit is around £400-450 on any single PC hardware, but I agree with your point.

That's why I've gone str8 into 4K and flipped that 4K TV on the wall for casual games and enjoy something at least trying to resemble smooth framerates on a 1080p display with 83 Hz overclocked panel (which surprisingly doesn't ghost).

Still a bit too much.

Oh by the way, @W1zzard, can you please test that RTX 4060 Ti in GTA IV on highest possible settings?

Surely you paid way more than £800 for the 2080ti though? Although I guess it's a bit different since that was the very top card at the time. I've slowly worked my way up the stack over the past 15-20 years or so, it was nice to buy the very top this time around, though really not nice when the credit card bill came in o_O

Also on the resolution thing, yeah, don't go 4k, that's what leads to dropping a reasonable month's take home on a GPU :D!

agreed! Crazy ain't it. We still consider ~£800 being too much (rightly so...) and yet Nvidia decided to take the big cards way beyond this range. May the eye-candy Lord help us!

Surely you paid way more than £800 for the 2080ti though?

I got mine used, in-fact got a good deal in 2021 with a full used build probably 2 years after the 2080TIs release. I posted up on it here: https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/...-price-on-this-used-build.289226/post-4655429 Great build, in top form and still going strong eventhough its a single thread 9700K (upgrade window wide open!)

"very top this time around?"

4090?

amazing card only if it wasn't priced so rediculously high.

Nice, I actually did the same thing, got a secondhand 2080ti about 4 months after release for £850, which whilst still a lot, was a lot better than MSRP!

Yeahhh. I have two kids now & my thinking was I won't have any spare cash for high end computer stuff for a while, so why not spend way too much on a GPU now, before it's too late :p & yes, with nursery bills I'm seriously considering selling it & going back to being sort of sensible.

It's a cut-down GPU which suggests that a Ti version is coming sooner or later with an even higher price tag. There's nothing amazing about it, imo.

It's not special in the sense that it's about 25% faster than anything else out which is about normal for the top card in a generation, but it is still the best card you can buy.
If they do a 4090ti it won't really make any sense to buy given it'll likely come out a few months before the 5090. Those 3090ti buyers really got screwed :(

Not all of them. I personally know one who bought a 3090 Ti with faulty fans with about 40% discount. Do I need to mention he doesn't care about cooling systems aesthetics..?

He said he already purchased "very top this time around", ----> i'm querying whether hes referring to the 4090

Ooh i couldn't pull a trigger on one, too dirty pricey. I think reverting back to "sensible" is a plan and a half :p

You get screwed if you buy top tier. It's the natural order of things.

You do pay more for sure, it's the same as anything that's top tier in tech, from TVs to cars. The best stuff always has the furthest to fall in price, that's just standard depreciation rules. Doesn't stop it being the best money can buy for a year+ though :D!
If you're willing to ride it for more generations it can be actually not that bad though. For example the 1080ti FE that I bought at launch is still in my partner's PC, so that's been great value given it's still pretty capable today, just no DLSS & FG shenanigans.
There's also the time I sold my 2080ti for £1k & bought a 3080 FE for £649. But that was mining craze silly times. I did ask the 2080ti buyer why he was content spending so much when he could get something newer, faster & more efficient for cheaper. He said he doesn't like to be on the bleeding edge & didn't want to have to fight the crowds to get a new card. Fair enough I suppose! If only every upgrade could pay me £351

I still do want to buy this just for the sake of it being the last FE card with the blower fan design. I legit despise newer designs, both in Turings, Amperes, and Adas. MAAAAAAAYBE they are efficient but they look so awful it hurts to even think about it.

VR HMD Quest 2
I still do want to buy this just for the sake of it being the last FE card with the blower fan design. I legit despise newer designs, both in Turings, Amperes, and Adas. MAAAAAAAYBE they are efficient but they look so awful it hurts to even think about it.
Oh man, I remember opening every one of the FEs I've bought, those original slightly polygon-esque design ones looked so damn cool! They, err, ain't quiet though. The new designs are definitely way quieter!

I've still got my old 980 blower collecting dust in the cabinet - if interested? It was always nice having hot air exhausted out opposed to in.

That was my last blow/FE! Good riddance! The jet engine noise levels done it for me. I've only bought AIB cards ever since. Actually i would appreciate seeing more affordable options going forward resembling the 120mm ASUS noctua edition cards without having to mod and void warranty.

Thanks for the offer but I'm very far from the UK. Post expenses will be bigger than this GPU's market price.

"The fact is that NVIDIA owns the GPU market and AMD seems happy with their small market share, selling similar products at 10% less than NV. Maybe the upcoming Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT can change that."

Based on past experience, I'm not hopeful that AMD will initially price their new GPUs such that Nvidia is forced to reduce their own prices.

Personally I don't think people buying $500 graphics cards are gaming at 60Hz.
I do, but at 3840x2160 :D

This TV does 120Hz at 1080p.. but no thanks :)

Naming this generation "Ada" is a thorough insult to Ada Lovelace.

Look at the 7900 GRE and you'll see that you should expect no grand things from the RX 7800 - that is what you need to know

7900GRE performance is fine for a $500-600 target price, and it ought to be more power-efficient on smaller Navi32 silicon rather than the big Navi31's worst yields with tons of dead die area.

10-20% faster than a 6800XT at 10-20% lower power draw is a win. Pricing should (hopefully) be in line with current market price of RDNA2 - and it's no faster than the 6900XT which has been selling for sub-$600 for a long time now.

It's only competing against RDNA2 and Ampere. It's not competing against the 4070/Ti in this segment, because this far into the enthusiast price range, features like DLSS3 and RT performance are actually relevant. Raytraced with DLSS3 even comparing a 4070 to a 7900XTX is basically no contest; Upscaling is required, so DLSS is worth having over FSR. Frame gen is a bonus on top of that that AMD doesn't have at all, and Nvidia's base RT performance is significantly ahead of AMD's so the end result is an unplayable 20-30fps on one and silky-smooth 80fps on the other, at better image quality to boot....
