118 dollar for 2tb best drive for gaming ever made was too hard for me too resist. Even some gen5 drives don't beat the sn850x at 3mark ssd test.

Samsung USB firmware update boot

Thanks for that, I didn't know that was an option. Here I was using the awfull samsung app when I could just boot an image!

I Raid O two 1TB samsung 860 Evo but not for the speed but because I want a single storage pool for games since thats my steam drive.

I understand the point you were trying to make though but I think for a games drive its safe. Still have a Raid 0 array with two Intel 160GB SSD's that is still running today and that is about 10 years old.

I'm planning to do something in the same vein soon, zfs pool in a vm for the data integrity. I though about using AMD raid but the negative comments from Wendell on level1techs discouraged me from it.

WD SN850X 2TB for $118

That's awesome, I feel like a total chump having bought a 980 pro about one year and half ago for more than double that - prices were getting normal and I want one for the ps5, who would think prices would crash like they!?

I'm seeing two in AIDA64, the 2nd one, seems to be controller temperature
I think there only is two, I am going to report to hwinfo dev, on my 980 pro the first 2 detected sensors always have the exact same reading.

On the review, I looked at most of the pages, interestingly the 990 pro has high power usage at idle with power savings enabled compared to 980 pro, but as you mentioned in the conclusion I then did notice the better energy efficiency during writes, so that is interesting.

Also I liked how you had to get this drive, representing what people do in real life, looking for a bargian and ignoring it whilst the price wasnt reasonable, I could only imagine if all reviews were like this without samples. If the price isnt reasonable it then gets no coverage. :)

Question this below is from @b1k3rdude above

Why is there such a large difference in the RND4K Q32T16 numbers from the same drive?

They perform terribly, your QD1 speed is slower than a single drive. But if in 2023 you still think RAIDing SSDs is a good idea, more power to you.
I RAID them purely because Samsung didn't bring out the 4TB version in time for my build.

You aren't aware that you can create multiple STEAM libraries that basically act like one? ;) Going Raid 0 for your use case is just not smart, esp. if you're not interested in higher speeds that net no practical benefit anyways. Plus you end up with higher latency and a very increased chance of complete data loss.

Hopefully we get the Crucial T700 added to this list soon :)

Spoiler: it will shred all other drives. :D

As one of the world leaders in digital technology, Samsung pretty much makes any type of electronic device you can think of.

I can think of the DRAM chips for these SSDs and Samsung doesn't make them :D

Look at the screenshots again fella, mine is for Q32Q1, where as Wizzard's is for Q32T16.

Only in sequencials, even then only for 20s before the SLC cache is exhausted, then is down the 3.5k, at which point its the same as a good PCIe 4.0 SSD. And as for the 4KQD1 r/w its slightly better than my Sabrent at reads but then slower at writes - so imho not work the cost premium.

Did you update the article? I could have sworn I saw a Hynix chip in there.
Yeah, the image description used to say Hynix (copy and paste error)

Is this thing worth 30/40€ over Kingston KC3000 or WD SN850X?

Im not sure if its worth paying that samsung tax, especially considering some recent firmware issues they were having
2TB version no. But 1TB 990 Pro is worth it as it's the fastest 1TB PCIe 4.0 model out there i believe. Phison, Innogrit, WD and Solidigm controllers wont achieve their full performance until 2TB and my XPG Gammix S70 Blade 4TB based on Innogrit controller still loses to 1TB 990 Pro in some benchmarks.

As for sensors then yes Samsung has sensors for both NAND and Controller. You can easily detect which one is which by putting a load on the drive. The controller is usually marked as #2 and is always hotter than #1. Especially during load.

Hwinfo64 is not the best with drive sensors unfortunately. I have 3 Gen4 drives in my system and the only way to determine which on is which i have to place a load on one drive and see which temps go up and then rename that on is Hwinfo64.

CDM settings are different than in the review. Settings: Default (instead of NVMe SSD). Profile: Default. VBS: Dsabled. Drive not empty.

I'm so happy to see 4TB drives at or below $200.

The 2TB drives declining prices are even more encouraging.

My next build will have twice as much DDR5 memory as my last DDR4 build for the same price and I'll make a 4TB SSD the OS drive with 2TB drives as game storage.

I think you should swap those drives. My OS drives are still 512GB and nowhere near full, 4TB would be a waste. Unless you install games on the boot drive (which I'd recommend against).

Doesn't matter with an SSD.
If it fails it fails.

Back in the days when I was running the OS on a spinner, I always had my games on separate spinners because back then it did matter.

Indeed. I have OS on 1TB. Data on 2TB and games on 4TB. It's not about failure. It's about convenience.
If you have to reinstall the OS then data and games stay in place. And it's easier to upgrade one of those separately.
