Kinda ironic to see a NVMe utilize the old SATA power connector. 2 steps forward.... 1 step backward!
That is only for the cooler, if you can fit it into a PCIe 5.0 m.2 adaptor with a big copper heatsink and cooler fan, you don't need that crappy sata power
Gigabyte is already readying it's solution:

Almost noone can use those, unless they want to run without a GPU

RAID cards that require a 16x slot wipe out your primary and secondary GPU slots leaving a nice 4x slot for your GPU

Hey Wiz, if you have the time could you do a CDM run on an X570 motherboard (assuming you have an AM4 test bench?)

You can use the first two slot if your mainboard can bifurcate PCIe 1x8/2x4, so I can use my 7900XT and my m.2 adapter card.
Of course these mainboards usually more expensive, the crappy value ones will not do that, so you have to read the mainboard's manual carefully before buying any.
My current one can do it (GIGABYTE X570S AERO G for AM4) as I use mine and here is some options for AM5:
ASUS ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI
ASROCK X670E Taichi

that still locks the second slot to 4x/4x, which is two NVME drives, not the four NVME drive cards people keep linking to and complaining about not working like this thing
PCIe 4.0/3.0 x16 interface, compatible with PCIe x8 and x16 slots

But when you dig deeper, without a full x16 slot only two drives can be used

These boards have bifurcation to get 2 drives working - but their confusing ass documentation is poor at explaining things

Yes I may only use two m.2 SSD from the possible 4...
I hoping for at least 10 more PCIe lanes for the next upcoming mainstream boards than what we currently have with the AM5 ones :D
On the real reply:
If someone is really needs that kind of hardware, then those should afford a Threadripper system.
Also, not understanding the manual is a bad excuse, I will not vouch for the boardmakers, they could improve the manuals, especially MSI and ASUS.
But in the end, everything is there.

I'm just driven nuts on the issue because they must have been on sale or promoted by some youtuber, because they're popping up constantly in help threads from people on FB and reddit - not the same user in many places either, but people throwing 4x2TB in them to RAID them and then trying to use them in 8x or 4x slots

Modern boards/CPUs dont have the PCI-E lanes to spare, i'm with you in that'd it be great if future boards could do something like PCI-E 5.0 to the chipset that gives us double the lanes back in 4.0 for NVME or a chipset based slot on the motherboards but cost is always the issue

Sharing lanes or even often lacking like (16× physical slot with only 8 or sometime only 4× lanes are extremely lame ) I am totally agreeing, we need moar lanes!!1
But there are some product lines like AMD's TRX40 mainboards, for example this bad boiii:
TRX40 AORUS XTREME
1692175506032.png

Which board gives you
PCIEX16_1 - 16 lanes
PCIEX8_1 - 8 lanes
PCIEX16_2 - 16 lanes
PCIEX8_2 - 8 lanes
with no lane sharing between other PCIe slots or m.2 slots
1692175980168.png

Wish I could afford the even the low end 24 core CPUs to them, since the connectivity is so great, and the drop off with the mainstream platform is bigger than the Grand Canyon

Sadly high pcie lanes is a segmented off feature now.

It's usually by rich kids building their first PC and wanting to show them off, but ending up with panicked "why cant windows see my drives" followed by "why cant the BIOS see my drives" and "why doesnt my GPU work in slot 3"

It's a catastrophic series of help posts, because people never share specs or photos from the beginning and you can't really diagnose missing NVME's when they're in an unknown add-in card with NVME RAID enabled
