Hi guys

My friend looking for new platform for working PC, 3D rendering

He is basically upgrading from intel 10850K to Ryzen 7900X

Which mobo do you recommend to handle 128GB ram and what ram frequency

What we got atm
GPU Rtx 4080
PSU bequiet Straight Power 11 1000W Gold
Case bequiet 500DX RGB
AIO Fractal Celsius S24+ 240. Could this AIO handle Ryzen 7900X?

Thank you for help!

128GB of ram is going to be difficult beyond base jedec speeds regardless of board he chooses but you are going to want to select a board validated in it's qvl for 4x32GB

@ir_cow would be the best person to ask hopefully he isn't too busy.

Ryzen 7000 is going to run at high temps regardless of cooler I'd do some research on the coldplate to make sure it's a good fit for ryzen somthing like an Arctic 240 aio is going to be better and likely cost the same.

Why wouldn't you get more vram instead of 128gb ram?
Are you rendering on the ram?

im thinking also to get 2x48GB, isn't more safe with ryzen 7000?

Thank you for help! yep 128GB could be bad to run at 5600mhz or above with AM5 platform.

if 4 memory slots is a must - i would pick B650M AORUS ELITE AX or B650M GAMING X AX, ~ $189

IMO this can be build with smaller case and more suitable psu,

I'd get 2x24 gb and see if it's not enough. Then I'd add another 2x24 (or 2x32) if necessary.

What kind of 3d work needs 128gb ram while only 16gb vram

How long 3d work has he done in the past? How much ram he has now?
He might be making the wrong decisions on hardware.

My impression is 3d artists have several GPUs. I've never came across an artist whom was using octruple amount of ram vs vram.

Ryzen 7000 series is designed to run at 95c regardless of cooler. The tricky part is if you don't have enough cooling potential, the boost won't be as high.

As for 128GB support, a have yet to retest since the new AGEAS update came out. Previously it was 4400-4800 with 4x dual-rank memory in 1:1 Ratio. Good news is 2:1 actually works so higher frequency is possible at the expense of latency.

fun fact: Asus's B650E boards didn't get newest Agesa Combo AM5 PI 1.0.0.7c, but X670E series has it already. B650E still has Combo AM5 PI 1.0.0.7b version

seems we need to get X670E?

Cheapest x670e is 260$ from ASRock, 300$ from MSI
All support 192gb ram
You can get an Asus for 300$, but max ram is 128gb

micro-ATX is out of options

All AMD MBs will eventually get 1.0.0.7c or newer. Each vendor rolls out the updates differently.

- I'm the current memory reviewer so I have a lot of kits :) . 6400 64GB kits is the highest I have, but OC can go much higher. Truly limited by the CPU IMC here.

Honestly for motherboard reviews it would be really great to see how much ram they can stably handle and at what speeds. The prosumer space basically evaporated so now to get 128 GB of ram stable on a consumer board is a crapshoot.

i checked in EU what 2x48gb ram i could get eventually. They have all crap timings 40-40-40-90 at 5600MHz, but voltage is 1.25

i guess its what we have now with 2x48gb ram, for sure technology will be better later .

You can go for 128GB just pick something that's rated for lower speeds, you do not need the fastest memory for 3D rendering/modeling.

Btw, please watch this video. You can see 13700k outperforms 7900x:

They're comparing with 7950x not 7900x. Along with 7800x3d (which is terrible price/perf for content creation)

I have bad news than. If you go above 1:1 ratio for memory, those timings are not a big deal because the latency penalty is 20ns. After all, you priority should be memory density, not timings.

In reality, DDR5-4400 vs DDR-5600 isnt going to make a difference when the CPU renders are hours long. You might have 10 minutes less, but in the grand scheme, that isn't a major loss.

x670 is just added peripherals - you can say its 2 B650 glued together,

both boards you listed are way more expensive, atx and offer nothing more than what i posed,

Upgrade to 8800x3d?

GIF by MOODMAN

8800x3d is going to cost more than 7900x and be slower than it in 3d software.
Besides selling 7900x is hard as its gaming performance is same as 5800x3d Link
So you're going to buy a 300$ motherboard and fill every slot with 48gb sticks and then when Lisa comes with a new processor, you're going to grab her hand and pay another 300$ to make your workflow slower?

And 14gen intel won't be much different than 13 gen
It's faster than 7950x and probably same as 8900x
Announcement mid Sep, available mid October

At least wait until 14th gen is released, it should make your Ryzen drop in price.

If the computer is for 3D Rendering, depending on the program, it can be offloaded to the Graphics Card. I know blender has this. Brings 5min Intel 13900K renders to under 30 seconds with just a 3080 Ti. Very impressive. Now not all type of scenes will work with CUDA rendering. Something you will have to research.

I would personally just go with DDR5-5600 2x48GB (96GB), unless 128+ is a absolutely necessary. Otherwise I'm pretty confident that DDR5-4800 is still the soft limit for 128GB / 196 in a 1:1 ratio configuration. Going to say 5600+ in 2:1 ratio will negatively impact performance if the program in question favors latency over raw bandwidth. As I said before, these CPU renders can take hours. But say it's 5 minutes per frame. You only lose a few seconds between the "fastest" memory configuration and the slowest. More cores will speed things up.

Do you know what 3D software will be used?

this one: Autodesk 3ds max, zbrush, marvelous designer, unreal engine
Hmmm, I only know the old versions of these programs. Might want to check up and see if support has increased.

3Ds Max I think support CUDA rendering. zbrush was 100% CPU a few years back. marvelous designer - no idea and Unreal is 100% CPU for banking textures. It kinda seems like HEDT is a better platform for a higher core count. But I don't see you needing over 64GB of ram.
