So, realistically - what would it take to push a Nividia FE 4090 to this kind of limit?
Not happening. Even at stock, the Matrix is faster than the manually overclocked FE. Maybe with some custom loop on the FE, not sure. Check the 3DMark ORB for TimeSpy Extreme GT1 results, these should be directly comparable to my OC results

This GPU is disgustingly awesome. I understand what it's for and who it is aimed at, but it's the price of two 4090s. No matter the warranty of how well crafted it is, at $3200, this product makes no sense, even if you're reaching out for the absolute best regardless of price. It's a very difficult proposition, with Ada being one year old and its successor no doubt being already in heavy development over at Nvidia. Let's just say you won't have any more fun with this than you would with a regular 4090, and perhaps even a high-end 4080 at this point.

For 3200$ you can buy 2 RTX 4090 for 1600$ each, connect them in SLI, get almost double the performance and show the middle one to thos asking 3200$ for a single unit :D

Wait, is this even a thing? I had no idea that the 4090 could be used in SLI mode. For some reason I thought all the GPU-makers have stopped supporting multi-GPU setups.

My big win from this article is the [new to me] Cost Per Frame table at different target resolutions. Very informative and certainly will be much more helpful in making buying decisions going forward as compared to other calculations.

Also, the Too Expensive Award! Haha! That certainly is well-deserved in this instance. Imo, this is a stupid product at a stupid price. But, hey, what do I know?

Stopped reading at "3200$".

That's insane.

Exactly!

A graphics card, invidious consumption edition.
Well, it's a graphics card. Slightly faster than other graphics cards, just as obsolete in five years. Built to impress some people, but many people are impressed by shiny things so meh.

They realized that they can sell the same cards at 3x the markup for miners, 0x the markup for the server market, or 100x the markup for the AI market. They have a limited allotment of wafers, so they have to jack up prices on consumer grade stuff to make it worth it instead of allocating 100% into AI market. Gaming cards only gives PR value now since it establishes the performance crown, but it doesn't bring in (as much) money (compared to the professional market).

It's probably also why AMD gives no crap that they dropped to single digit market share - they can make more money on Zen and EPYC than on Radeons, so they put less money into wafers and probably to R&D too. And I'd bet that the lack of R&D funds is why the MCM RDNA4 chips ended up as duds (at least maybe we can hope that they'll push their midrange cards at sane prices and we'll have another Polaris-like generation).

The 360/PS3 generation was a complete and utter joke as far as the hardware was concerned, and I'm saying that as someone who spent the day attempting to reflow dead PS3s. Plus both consoles had in-order execution only.

But the one after that had more sturdy hardware, didn't it?

360/PS3/Wii was a joke as far as HARDWARE is concerned.

But the GAMEPLAY WAS INCREDIBLE.

What happened to Dance Dance Revolution?

Guitar Hero?

Rock Band?

Why is it all we have to choose from on the MOST POWERFUL CONSOLES EVER is a bunch of BORING first person shooters and LAZILY MADE RPG Open-World games?

multi GPU yes. but clearly SLI isn't possible anymore.

Well the matrix doesn't show anything all that exceptional, for starters the metal frame concentrates too much weight where it does nothing but to hide the red copper coldplate which is very ingenious for compatibility reasons, just buy a new cold plate and reuse it on a 5090, just make it more full cover oriented and we should see more of it but the liquid tim is a mess. A weak pump and a strange contraption leading to an ugly braided tubing and outdated 360 rad that must be copper. but what if i'd like something more compact and transparent.

Hopefully tech reviewers get free samples it's the best thing every day for the nostalgic memories to evoke.

Which doesn't happen in my brain anymore for some reason. these days im just dying for the good old smell of unboxing a GPU. Can't transfer that over the internet.

I love the flat frequency curve!

I expected the card to be a bit quieter, though.

I'm curious about how they managed to achieve better performance than a full-cover-block-cooled card. However, the use of liquid metal with a non-nickel plate copper plate raises concerns. Additionally, it appears that the cooling system is mainly focused on the core and VRM, as the memory seems to be hot without any airflow.

Someone else posted it as well. Asus says they know better than he does basically which I find suspect and point towards it's longish warranty in some territories.
Liquid metal is perfectly fine on naked copper. It doesn't corrode it like aluminmum. What happens is the liquid metal basically "merges" into the copper. Doesn't destroy it, doesn't ruin the thermal conductivity. I have it like this on my 3090 for 2+ years now.

The only issue is, because the copper basically "absorbs" the LM until it saturates, usually you need to apply LM, use the card for a couple of weeks, then open it and reapply. Now you are good to go for basically ever. I hope Asus has done this, if not, the card will need repasting it at some point.

Here here! Aside from PSVR 2, where are the physical & fun games?! I had so much fun with Guitar Hero & Rock Band, I miss them.

I'd cut off the tubes and put it as a waterblock for the gpu... anyone knows the pump spec inside the block?

This is absolutely a horrible value, and we are getting screw** by the PC industry.

Let’s look at last gen shall we?

The RTX3090 Strix had a higher MSRP and it was more expensive than the RTX3090 Kingpin Hybrid! The Kingpin Hybrid had a 360MM AIO, and it had a hand binned die, and hand binned GDDR6X. And ASUS’s “run of the mill“ “Air-Cool” “STRIX 3090” had none of that, and it was still more EXPENSIVE…Is ASUS insane??? They really think they can charge more money for a run of the mill GPU, vs. an elite overclocking GPU. So, obviously when Asus did release an elite overclocking GPU aka “Matrix 4090” they are absolutely gonna charge an arm and a leg for it. Because ASUS thinks they are special for some reason.

Where is EVGA at? Man, we need a 4090 Kingpin Hybrid to come in and whoop this thing down for $2,249. I’d buy one. But this Matrix?! Lol. No thanks. I would grab an FE and a dual sided waterblock. Or better yet, I would buy a 4090 Galax HOF!!! Which I would MUCH rather have. GPU’s with AIO’s are lame anyways

This is an elite card, with an elite price tag, it should already come pre-installed with an elite waterblock attached. Not a gamer boy AIO cooler.

Nice to see the "Matrix" name comeback, thought it long gone like MSI "Lightning".
This is practically the best GPU if all you want is to pay BIG on a GPU.
It`s actually it`s main feature- The most expansive consumer GPU available (or worst pref/$$$ if you like).

It's funny to see manufacturers compete on price, but the other way around (the more expensive, the better?).

interesting that this card can OC like 5% more than others with the same voltage limits.

is there any graph with the thermal dynamic frequency based on temperature for the 4000 like it was for the 3000?

Hello everyone,

Can you explain to me how you manage to have 1543MHz in memory while I have the same as you and I cannot go beyond 1438mHZ otherwise it crashes!!

Either Asus sent you an unusual card or we French are entitled to crappy chips, excuse me for the expression..... I think it will quickly return to the seller and get my money back!

Overclocking is down to silicon quality (among other factors). Just because your card doesn't reach the stars with its VRAM clock, it doesn't mean it's defective.

Drawing an overall conclusion of a country's GPU supply based on two samples (yours and the one in the review) is stupid.

Ok but putting €3500 on a card when I also have a liquid MSi X in RTX 4090 which does the same thing, I don't find that too normal.....
