I'll go ahead and sum it up:

The Gran Turismo series as a whole (Except for the GT5 prequel).

Props to the Test Drive series (4 & 5 for sure) as well across PSX and PS2 systems .... The one for PS2 with the Charger on the cover is really good!

Also if you can, checkout Demolition Racer, a rarely mentioned gem for PSX - Loved scoring "Death from above" in that one!
Fast gameplay with some ridiculous tracks to race and stuff going on with what you could call "Wreckin-Racin" and you score points by doing both - Wrecking opponents and coming in first!
Decent game physics too (For a PSX) so if you spot a copy, give it a try.
Yes, there is a straightup "Demo" arena or two (or three) in it as well.

For the PSX and maybe for some non-racing (Competitive) stuff, "Driver" would fill the bill for some of you.
No competitive racing but still lots of speed, wild driving (Dodging cops) and if you want, a quick trip downtown (On your own time in the game) can get crazy in a hurry.

I played the heck out of GT on PS1. Mine was modded so I was running the Japanese version of GT 6 months before the NA release :D

Good times :)

I will probably get a bad response for even bring this up, but I have been loving the racing in Star Citizen.

Gran Turismo 4 has to be the GOAT racing game. Such an insane amount of content, that game was years ahead of its time and in some ways unmatched even today. The licenses and driving missions are so perfectly challenging, they hit this sweet spot where they are hard enough to take hours to complete but never get frustrating. The physics are not the most realistic but they perfectly fit the controllers of the era, it just feels so much fun to throw cars on the track when inertia is just a mere suggestion :). My only gripe with this game is that the english versions omitted the car descriptions that are present in GT5/6 (yes, I enjoy reading in a video game :p). Oh and also all of the cars sound like vacuum cleaners.

@AusWolf I like the Dirt Rally games too, but I suck at them so I tend to quit fast.
I'm not really good, either. :ohwell: I tend to enjoy simulators in short bursts anyway - I get bored in the long run. That's what makes me lazy to set up my wheel for Nascar Heat 5, even though I want to try it. :D

Nah, it's cool. Speaking of which, does anyone remember Star Wars Episode 1: Racer? :D

I bought the N64 expansion pack for that game, looked so sharp (relatively) on a 13" CRT.

I enjoyed the heck out of it on PC. There were quite a few planets mentioned in the movies and other games that were never shown, but this game had race tracks on a few of them. :)

In the past NFSMW, NFS Pro Street and original GRID.
NFS Pro Street was awesome in the first few stages, but once you got that highway race mode where your car went into some identity crisis and confused itself with a weightless space rocket, I stopped playing.

Do they even have joystick or HOTAS support?
They have had joystick support for many many years now. You don't need joysticks to be competitive but most of the competitive people use joysticks. HOSAS is usually preferred because 6 degrees of freedom. Some people do enjoy and use HOTAS. You can really go as wild with inputs as you want.

My favourites are easy to list: The entire Forza Motorsport series.

I have played most other racing games as well, but since the release of Forza Motorsport it has been the undisputed champion to me.

It was Gran Turismo 2 for me, now it's Beam NG . drive. Because of the best combo out there of Beam NG . drive + Automation.

I like some of the Need For Speeds as well. Notably Need For Speed III. It's a tricky one for Underground 2 (and possibly the same for first Underground as well)

I never got a chance to play the 2005 version. I did play some Street Racing Syndicate in 2004. It was the same one that came out in 2004, IIRC. (PlayStation 2?)
I don't ever remember coming across a PlayStation 3.

I find Beam NG .drive + Automation to be on whole new level never seen before, where not too long after seeing videos online of both of them, I sure got hooked! (YouTube videos, IIRC)
Nothing beats the ability to make vehicles to your specs in Automation! No wonder why I'm so excited about the upcoming new "openbeta" of Automation!

And, the graphics got better in Beam NG .drive this year. Honestly, I can't see one with better modern graphics then the most recent Beam NG . drive.

Seems to run well on Radeon RX 67x0 series.

Underground is also fine, yet I hate its "rubber band effect" on the CPU opponents' cars.

What a great timing as I'm having an AVGN maraton once again. His Big Rigs episode is one of my favourites.

Right now i am about to play and finish the Kaido Battle Series.

Racing games i played:

- Need for Speed, started with hot pursuit 2, Prostreet is my favorite part.
- Tokyo Xtreme Racer/ Shutokou Battle / Import Tuner Challenge
- Blur, happy that it got released, sad that they couldn't finish the second one.
- Juiced, love the bet and race system in the first, hated the second.
- World Racing, 1st got me into trance music, bought the second when it released on steam, long time i had really fun with a racing game.
- Burnout Revenge
- Forza Motorsport 4 & Horizon Series, they should fix their goddamn car models.
- Gran Turismo 2,4,6
- Dirt, Grid and TOCA series, last good games were Dirt Rally and Grid Autosport.
- Enthusia
- Test Drive Unlimited, ps2 version is the best. also it inspired the crew with the finding of wrecks as an example.
- Midnight Club 2, 3 and LA, 2nd best part and also got me into trance.
- Lotus Challenge (2001)
- Flatout/Wreckfest, my favorite for banger racing
- Mario Kart, especially DS for the story mode, Double Dash for the special items, Wii/7/8 for the gameplay.
- V Rally 3
- Ridge Racer 7/Unbounded
- Micro Machines
- Toybox Turbo
- Hot Wheels Unleashed
- Assetto Corsa
- F1 2020, not a bug fan of the genre but i enjoyed 2020
- Trackmania, that game helped me to shape my racing line as a kid. still the greatest time attack mode.
- Project Cars 1 & 2
- Moto Racer 4
- Street Legal Racing Redline
- GT Legends
- Burnin Rubber 5 ... best game for shitty computer.
