Honest question, was the unboxing part of the sampling agreement?
Other than "respect the embargo", there is no requirements or anything. Intel would probably be happy to have a review at some point. My job is to inform you guys of things happening in the hardware space, 14th Gen is one of the biggest launches this year

One year, with the 13900KS specifically being released in mid-January. This is physically the same silicon with the same stepping and the microcode, so I would be quite cross if the Application Optimization thing is left out of the original Raptor Lake models just to create a gap between these CPUs. They... offer us absolutely nothing this time.

Oh, really, is that right? I was wondering about this because the only way I can undervolt my 13600k with my mobo is with a bios hack to downgrade the microcode, and was thinking of a getting a 14700k but wasn't sure if it was compatible and I might need undervolting because of my cooling solution and psu. I even asked gigabyte, and they didn't know either.

That doesn't seem right. Voltage control is fully unlocked on the K chips. Must be some limitation with the B760 chipset, then. I use a negative voltage offset to undervolt my 13900KS just fine on my Z690 board.

But yes, the 14th gen chips have the same stepping, same CPUID and same internal model as the existing Raptor Lake chips. Zero physical changes.

Yeah that's right it's because of the chipset. From what I understand undervolting was taken away at some point because of a vulnerability that was found.

Good to see Intel learned nothing from the past and keeps happily churning out +4% performance "generations" that are a pure waste of time and just an PR stunt (at worst bad for the environment, which is another thing Intel isn't good at, behaving like a big old dinosaur). Terrible company that I will never buy again unless there's no alternative.

So a new Heat exchanger from intel. Good, it´s going to be a cold cold winter i´ve been told.

But i am not in a hurry to upgrade. Zen 3 still does a fine job and zen 3 is not so much of a Heat exchanger as Intels 13/14 gen and AMD Zen 4 and maybe the upcommomg Zen 5.
If i deside to upgrade back to intel again. It will not be before a new socket comes out propaly with 15 gen.

But don´t worry, i have my own Heat exchangers in form of RTX 4060/4090. They will keep me warm and cosy this winter....

What do you mean? I do not think that the publishers are oblidged to unbox it, or publish the review the very first second they are allowed to. They just choose to do it because it brings some views and money. The more and the sooner they do, the more views they get.
Just curious.

Thanks for the reply and yeah I did not want to claim or spread anything, I was simply curious about these unboxings at so many media outlets. I do like the in depths articles and reviews here, not so much a fan of any unboxings at all, but that is a personal thing.

I don't consider that a big launch anyway, since it is a minor refresh. The only real refreshing thing is the 14700K in my opinion.

I think we get the answer if all the reviewers show an unboxing.

Yeah that's right it's because of the chipset. From what I understand undervolting was taken away at some point because of a vulnerability that was found.
Not fully taken away.

There is now a bios option which I think defaults to disabled for OS controlled undervolting, regardless of what that is set to, you can still undervolt in the bios.

That setting you have to enable if you want to undervolt with something like XTU.

Simple answer, want to mess with voltages and the like, buy a Z motherboard.

Yeah I dunno, undervolting never worked for me, even in the bios, until there was a bios update that added the ' uCode 0x104' option. It even says right there where you get the update 'CPU Internal Vcore and CPU Ring Voltage offset works on K-sku processors only when paired with 0x104 uCode version.' Anyway I just want to know if thats going to work on 14th gen. Its really only worth it to me if I don't have to change anything else, including mobo, psu, and cooling. And if I do upgrade, undervolting is a tool I want to have in my toolbox.

That perhaps would have been helpful a year ago :p

At the time I was thinking all I needed was the 13600k which is both cooled and powered pretty easy.

They are doing their jobs.

The review embargo is not up yet, so everybody's doing the next best thing. From a money perspective: very decent traffic on the article so far, on-par with many reviews that take multiple hours to complete. This article is 30 minutes of photos for me, then farm it out to one of our awesome staff members to write the text, maybe 1 hour, so I can continue with the actual review work, like benches, then I come back to verify content accuracy, fine-tune and off to the proofreader.

Nothing more valuable than performance slides based on the top dog chip overclocked to the silicon melting point & tested with pre-selected games. :D Let's just wait for independent reviews.

Anybody know when the embargo lifts?

That's very northern-hemisphere-centric. Our Australian and Brazilian forum friends are now calculating additional A/C costs in fear.
The southern hemisphere will now cycle into the BBQ season, so with a passive CPU cooler you could leverage the massive heat output for your summer grill parties. Intel branded steaks, yummy.

So overall not even half a gen of upgrade and calling it a refresh itself is stretching it let alone as SKUs call it 14th gen.
it isn't even a refresh, it is just a rebrand

at least the 13th gen had some cache, so refreshed the 12th gen

14th gen is just the 13th gen with new numbers, the 13900KS becomes the 14900K is all it is

I know it probably won't happen, but I'd love to see power consumption for P-cores only.

I'm curious if the increase from a 14600K to a 14700K is linear, or if the latter more efficient.
Ryzen 7600 and 7700 have pretty much identical power consumption, even though the 7700 has two more cores and higher clock speeds.

I wasn't able to find a comparison like this for 13th gen.

True, but that still comes with the risk of them losing press/review kits in the future.

Any less than positive review runs that risk. If you are that afraid of a company you really are not going to provide objective content to begin with.

It's amazing you can get a 13900K bundle with a Z790 ASUS motherboard and 32GB DDR5 for under $800 right now. Less than 1 year from now, you'll be able to get a 14900K with the same deal - or better.

Not sure if I should wait for the 14 or just grab the 13 during Black Friday?

Not worth waiting. These processors are functionally equal and the clock speed difference is honestly too little to bother. The 13900K will lose a couple of benchmarks but i doubt you can tell them apart. If you insist, you can buy the 14900K today by grabbing one of the last few remaining 13900KS that are still in stock instead.

Zen 3, any zen 3, is a way bigger heat exchanger than any 13th gen or zen 4. Match the performance and your zen 3 will consume double or even more wattage of the 14900k.
