Zen 3, any zen 3, is a way bigger heat exchanger than any 13th gen or zen 4. Match the performance and your zen 3 will consume double or even more wattage of the 14900k.

And that in no way makes what was said in that post wrong. I know people are getting emotional when intel is mentioned (they feel the need to attack it no matter what) so let's stick to ryzen. A 7950x is way way more efficient at the same wattage compared to the 5950x. That's a fact. Therefore the biggest heat exchange is the 5950x, since it needs way more wattage for the same work done. Having a zen 3 and commenting (negatively) about the efficiency of zen 4 is just delusional.

Meh whatever its just one generation without any major changes, and at least they are calling it raptor lake refresh. If they do it next year too then I think that will be worthy of some criticism.

It floods the press with contentless content, diluting the ratio of actual independent reviews to marketing fluff content like unboxings and obfuscating the real job of independent review sites.

Articles like this will clog up future search results, too - so this isn't just a problem for today, but it impacts consumers looking for independent reviews for the entire duration of the products useful lifespan.

If you like it, that's fine. This is just my opinion and I don't like the increasing manipulation Nvidia/Intel/AMD/Apple have on the independent review cycle. Many content creators have independently expressed their dislike of the multi-stage embargos and the goal of the corporations dictating these embargos is simple - to flood all the content streams with more of their marketing. If you like having a single release rammed in your face by every site and channel six times with pre-anouncement teasers, announcements, official preview performance benchmarks, not-so-unofficial leaks, unboxings, and then finally actual reviews - then fine.

Personally, I was quite happy to have the "classic" release schedule of an announcement, and then a launch review. Nice and simple, no extra hype, and no portion-controlled steady dribble of content at a rate and frequency of the corporation's choosing.

What I find the funniest is that Intel really means to go ahead with a full-size launch event for these things. I hope the media pans them for it.

The 14900K isn't a bad processor, it's just not a new processor, and this time, we didn't even get a coat of paint... it's the same old Raptor Lake we've seen struggling against Zen 4 for the chart toppers for a year now. Nothing new.

Agreed, but... it's not really a substantial bump on the i5 segment either. It seems like the star of this show is specifically the i7-14700K, it's the only one that offers a meaningful improvement over the 13700K, or a meaningful improvement at all.

Thing is, it's nothing a tuned 13600K won't match or exceed, and in my case, I already have a 13900KS. So like... I really get nothing

I feel like these CPUs are not worthy of a full generation, they should have been called -13650K, -13750K and -13950K instead.

It is also assumed that Arrow lake's i7 has at least better MT performance. A certain degree of IPC improvement can be expected.

It caused the spectacular collapse of Zen 3 prices. AMD could no longer afford to sell ryzen 5 for $300+ and Ryzen 7 for $400+ and launched, very late, budget Zen 3 processors (5600 non X, 5500, etc.)

2022 - 13th
It caused a downward revaluation of Zen 3 and 4 prices. 12th prices also dropped.

2023 - 14th
It is certainly not a viable option for upgrading from 12-13th the same class (i9->i9, for example) but it is a major upgrade from i3/i5 to i7/i9. Good prices will lead to lower prices on everything that has been released so far, including Zen.

I don't understand what the AMD fans are upset about. I really don't understand that without these Intel releases, they were buying r5 for $300+, r7 for $400+, and for r9 and X3D they had to sell their house?

It's more difficult to cool, though, since the chiplets are smaller and the IHS is thicker. At stock TDP, the 5950X was actually one of the coolest high-end CPUs ever.

14th gen is just the 13th gen with new numbers, the 13900KS becomes the 14900K is all it is

Yeah, this looks about the same as what I personally have in mind, although I am unsure the 14900KS will ever release. They might pull one last rabbit out of the Intel 7 hat, but I doubt it. The 13900KS is already insanely tightly binned, and while the 14900K's matching its clocks on paper; due to the tighter tolerances on 13900KS I still expect them to be better, if only slightly so.

It does not. There are no physical changes and there is no hardware revision, no new stepping. The extra L3 cache you are seeing is associated to the extra E-core cluster that the 14700K has. This is the only SKU where there has been a change, i7 went from 8P+8E to 8P+12E. The i5 and i9 are unchanged.

Interesting. This is exactly what I was expecting, the i9-13900KS ever so slightly outperforming the 14900K as seen in the 0.1 and 1% lows, with about the same fps averages. Can't wait for the reviews to hit.

I can't either, if the reviews are anything short of a grill then I will be disappointed, as this generation seems to be a big nothing burger and intel should be bonked for wasting our time. The userbenchmark copium train will be interesting to see though.

Also interested to see how things go for the i7-14700K, as that one seems to offer something

I bought an open-box Z690 near-flagship motherboard for half-price (Z690 Aorus Master) from Microcenter because I was picky about some options I wanted; I bought open box G.Skill Trident DDR5 for less too. If I decide to upgrade from a 13600k, it will be drop-in.

I definitely don’t think Raptor Lake Refresh is a great deal if one is building a whole new system; I’d probably wait a generation if one has ninth-gen Intel hardware or newer. This is the last gasp for LGA1700; I wouldn’t put a motherboard into it unless one has already.

For me, the mainboard is nearly as important as the CPU and I only build once every five years now. A 14700/14700K might be worth it. Whether that’s immediately or when they go to the eventual discount cycle is another matter.
