Most of the Dell machines from this era I've come across are very similar keyboard wise. It's certainly above average for the era and great by modern standards. Modern laptops rarely rival laptops of this era in keyboard feel.

Got around to the second Inspiron I bought from Goodwill. This one is a 6400 and is in nearly perfect cosmetic condition once I cleaned it up a bit.

Laptop has a T2080 1.73ghz Core Duo (potato), 2+512mb RAM, Radeon X1400, 120GB SATA HDD. It came with a 65w brick and a non functional battery.

For some reason Goodwill decided to install Windows 10 onto this. It's completely unusable, as you'd imagine. I'll work on fixing that shortly here. Unsure what OS to go with. I have an XP disc on hand.

Also wouldn't mind putting a cheap SSD in here and a better CPU. I don't know If I could put a 65nm core 2 in here or not.

Really love the chassis of these. Easy to repair, solid design, good keyboard, blue lit media control buttons are cool.

IIRC, the memory should have some wiggle room unless it's a less than optimal sample of the card. Silicon lottery is always a thing...

Windows? XP is what the system came with and you can find the Dell system restore disc "online".

Sadly, there is no way for 4ns class memory on pictured card to come even close to 2ns GDDR3 on GT model.

These were pretty awesome when new. Crazy how well it held up! I installed windows 10 on a first gen i3 HP lappy w/4gigs of ram and its smooooth. This probably just needs an SSD.

I got 11 to run on as old as a Core 2 Duo T6600 I think (Acer Aspire 6930G w/ HD4650 I think it was).

Runs great but I had to use a WD Black due to not having a SSD handy (and wasn't really going to get one just for 11, or a C2D for that matter).

Damn, had to put together a XP rig once again since I just love that mid-2000s hardware. Though the PSU & case are modern ones

-MSI K9N NeoV2
-Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (my slowest AM2 chip, on purpose)
-4GB DDR2-800 (I could go to 2x1GB if I check my drawers)
-Radeon X800 GT @ 600/525
-SATA DVD-ROM
-Seagate 2.5" 7200rpm 250GB SATA (actually pretty snappy for a 2.5" drive)
-Fractal ION Gold 550W
-Fractal Focus G

That is awesome! Solid setup. I have a 5200+ I want to do an SLI setup with my 7900 GT’s lol. Need a few more things. I only have a crossfire board of course but no ATI cards at the moment lol.

Nah, scrapped that. For celebration of today's super-heater 14900K, I swapped the mobo to a LGA775 Asus and put a P4 541 there. I have newer ones as well (as 45nm Core2 CPUs) but I wanted to make a 2004-ish high-end machine. Other parts remain the same.

(and yeah, X800 GT was released in 2005 but after all, it's more like a 9800 XT on steroids)

Fine then, you got me sold on the 754+9700 combo.

Here's what I came up with, for now:

- MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R
- A64 3000+ skt754
- 2.5GB DDR400
- Hercules Prophet 9700 Pro 128MB
- Samsung SP1654N IDE + 2x74GB WD Raptor
- ASUS DRW-1814BL DVD drive
- HKC SZ-430PDR 430W PSU (would have went for a Seasonic but that one needs a full recap and I don't have caps atm)
- Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
- ASUS WL-138g WLAN card
- ASUS K8A9-8SB3 cooler
- JNC-Nokia RJA-7610 case
- XP SP3 Integral Edition (SATA and all known updates, I think it includes POSReady updates as well)

Think quite a few people got the HD5850 too, which wasn't a bad card either, like the GTX 470.

I myself had a GTX 275 but only because I was running 2x 9800 GTX in sli and one went bad, so the shop replaced the both of them with just one GTX 275.
