Think quite a few people got the HD5850 too, which wasn't a bad card either, like the GTX 470.

I myself had a GTX 275 but only because I was running 2x 9800 GTX in sli and one went bad, so the shop replaced the both of them with just one GTX 275.
I finally found a second 9800 GTX+ to run in SLI. I really need an SLI board lol.

Gotta love how less cooling an old P4 system needs compared to modern beasts.

Need to test that is it easy to OC that CPU to 4GHz with that small tower cooler (originally from an Acer system with a Celeron D)

EDIT: Now I freed up few fans as I disassembled my 2500K system and put an air cooler to it, so I can put more ventilation to the old P4 :)

I remember having a GTS 250 1GB in my media PC about a decade ago. Can't remember was it with a 65nm or 55nm chip though.
Pretty sure those are 55nm. Basically a 1GB 9800GTX+!

You might be right, I probably got mixed up with GTX 260 216shader as some of those used the older 65nm GT200 GPU.

Yeah I had one of those GTX 260 Core 216’s. Great bang for buck at the time over the regular 260’s.

IIRC, the memory should have some wiggle room unless it's a less than optimal sample of the card. Silicon lottery is always a thing...

Windows? XP is what the system came with and you can find the Dell system restore disc "online".
I was thinking Vista since it's been so long since I messed with it. But surely the XP restore disc is the best choice. I might look for one.

These were pretty awesome when new. Crazy how well it held up! I installed windows 10 on a first gen i3 HP lappy w/4gigs of ram and its smooooth. This probably just needs an SSD.
Physically it's held up great. This is before inspirons got cost cut so it's very sturdy.

Sadly an SSD would only help so much, but I might still get one. A T2080 is probably a small fraction of the power of a first generation i3. It's also 32 bit only.

I'm looking into upgrading this to a 64 bit CPU but not sure if it's possible. I need to look into what chipset this uses.

Hm, Vista.. last time I used it just before Win7 was out, and since I had an okay system (C2D E6400 @ 3.4GHz, 4GB RAM, HD 3870X2) it ran just as well as 7 later on.

Practically Vista got so much shit because it was preinstalled on underpowered prebuilts (single core, 512MB or 1GB RAM, integrated GPU..). With a beefier system, it was an ok OS. Not nearly as bad as everyone usually says.

Got around to the second Inspiron I bought from Goodwill. This one is a 6400 and is in nearly perfect cosmetic condition once I cleaned it up a bit.

Laptop has a T2080 1.73ghz Core Duo (potato), 2+512mb RAM, Radeon X1400, 120GB SATA HDD. It came with a 65w brick and a non functional battery.

For some reason Goodwill decided to install Windows 10 onto this. It's completely unusable, as you'd imagine. I'll work on fixing that shortly here. Unsure what OS to go with. I have an XP disc on hand.

Also wouldn't mind putting a cheap SSD in here and a better CPU. I don't know If I could put a 65nm core 2 in here or not.

Really love the chassis of these. Easy to repair, solid design, good keyboard, blue lit media control buttons are cool.
Many Dell laptops from that era have a very similar chassis. I am familiar with it; I had a 120 GB BX500 in my old Dell (the old TLC version, that is). As for the OS, I would recommend trying out Haiku on it. I don't know if the audio will work if it has a Sigmatel AC97 chipset though.

Vista was pretty shite IME even on good hardware pre-SP1. After that it was pretty okay, particularly after some judicious UI tweaks.

I have to admit that I wasn't an early adopter, but IIRC Vista was bashed during its whole lifetime.

Heey it used practically the same drivers as Win7, probably they just sucked in the beginning since I can't remember anything special about devices' Win7 drivers being crap. And I used Win7 x64 from the beginning to the end (except when I tested it with old non-x64 hardware but that's a whole different story)..

Damn, my P5Q Pro is alive as well, thought that it was dead. The problem was with the RAM, tested the same 2x1GB sticks which worked with other boards I've tested on this week, and POSTed on the first try.

So the P4 setup is finally what I want it to be. :toast:

-P4 541 @ 3.6GHz
-Asus P5Q Pro
-2GB DDR2-667
-X800 GT @ 600/525

Though I'd love to have a X800 XT PE or something there but I'll try to keep it as is. I have a Cedarmill P4 but I think that the Prescott-1M chip is more appropriate. Would need an older mobo though instead of a high-end P45 one. :D

Is 3.6ghz the highest that 541 will go? I feel like they could hit close to 4ghz will decent cooling!

also, share some pics!

That cooler sucks. Though I have plans for improving it in some point since I disassembled the waterloop from my 2500K setup ;)

I'll post some pics later today or tomorrow when I fire it up the next time :toast:

Did some research and it seems this chipset does up to 666mhz FSB 65nm Core 2 Duos.

I bought a T7400, another 2GB sodimm, and a 64GB SSD from AliExpress. Should be here in a few weeks. Hope it all works.

I found an restore disc off of Internet archive for XP SP2. May or may not use it.
