Can anyone tell me why this stays black? Direct x fails to instail and the Dil file? It seems the GPU i have on there is the only one that works on the board.

I was just curious about the restore disc for all of the Original Dell stuff. But I probably don't actually want all that bloatware.

I just installed from an XP SP3 disc I had on hand. Took me awhile to get driver's working, but I got everything I need.

Going to see how it games. Annoying I have to rebuy games I already own because steam hasn't supported XP in years. Using GOG. Will see how it runs. Mobility X1400 seems similar to a desktop X1300 so I'm not expecting much. CPU should be ok for early 00s games though.

Why don,t you just use the games ypu have,whithout using steam?I don,t suppose you had the problem i had with the black on the GPUZ .?I have never used steam myself. service pack 4?

I have the same original Alienware as shown in the picture for that video, other than the one I have is black.

Because they were purchased on Steam and require the Steam client to function. There are workarounds for making steam work on XP but I'm not dealing with that. I just got a few games on GOG to test.

I have a physical disc for crysis but no way that will run playably here. Crysis on my t7400 8400gs embedded desktop was awful.

Running the original deus ex on here. Never played it before. Excellent experience here, runs it easily. Granted it's 6 years newer than the game.

You could also make a ISO file and upload it to Google drive.

While I have those, there is a known good/safe ISO repository that I would link them to.

No. The ISO is question is limited to properly licensed DELL machines and works properly ONLY on selected DELL machines. For OEM systems the license key is encoded in the BIOS and without it present, the install doesn't go well.

And, it just an ISO image being shared. Doesn't have anything to do with the license.

Correct. And before sharing I would ask the user in question for proof that the he actually owns the system in question. A screenshot of the front BIOS page with the service tag would be enough.

So no, not casually "sharing" Windows software.

I never did but one of my good friends growing up had that same green Alienware. He bought it before we became friends but I remembered he spent like $2,500 on it and I checked out the specs and died laughing because my $900 custom build from parts on Newegg was far better in every way. He was definitely all butt hurt when I told him how much I had put into mine at around the same time. I still want one of those cases though for a fun nostalgia build or a resto-mod.

Because they're dell and didn't want to use off the shelf parts when they had a ton of proprietary crap laying around that they were using in their own machines

And to answer the Alienware better before dell buyout it would be a YES they were as they used off the shelf components instead of proprietary garbage like dell who continually try to stuff hotter gear into a case not designed for it

The Dell restore cd would likely have installed a bunch of other bloatware crap so it's a non dell copy of XP with an official dell wallpaper put on it. I might make some more tweaks to it and add some dell software if there's anything useful to add.

This is definitely not an unmodified copy of XP, but I burned this ISO I got from a Google drive included with an XP key I bought on eBay in like 2018 and have used the disc on tons of systems since.

Because XP runs well on spinners, I'll keep XP on this drive and put either vista or 7 on the small SSD I got for it and switch between them. Super easy to swap drives on these. Love old laptops for that.

yea that's a no no one OS install per key unless you bought a volume license and have a ton of unused installs left for that key and most if not all VLK's are either fake or stolen on eBay

I had an R11 with a 2600k and originally sli fermi and 875w 80+ silver psu. Had a 120mm aio and the board was dell but standard matx and even could overclock in bios. Fancy vrm cooling, good quality standard board and PSU

But it was still starting to get Dell itis since the aio screwed into the case not a backplate. The RGB and fan control was all by separate daughterboards internally and likely wouldn't work with a different board. Case had no airflow and Dell used 20w fans to compensate. Very hard system to service.

It's also encoded in the Dell BIOS. So using a Dell XP disc has that benefit as it will self-activate. Most OS discs from Dell are without any additional programs/bloat/drivers. So if you can get one, it really is the best way to install XP on a Dell system.

I have never heard of it before ust looked it up thats the wonder of the internet you can look up anything.
BTX (for Balanced Technology eXtended) is a form factor for motherboards, originally intended to be the replacement for the aging ATX motherboard form factor in late 2004 and early 2005.

It was designed to alleviate some of the issues that arose from using newer technologies (which often demand more power and create more heat) on motherboards compliant with the circa 1996 ATX specification. The ATX and BTX standards were both proposed by Intel. However, future development of BTX retail products by Intel was canceled in September 2006 following Intel's decision to refocus on low-power CPUs after suffering scaling and thermal issues with the Pentium 4.

The first company to implement BTX was Gateway Inc, followed by Dell and MPC. The first generation of Apple's Mac Pro used some elements of the BTX design system as well, but was not BTX-compliant, instead using a proprietary form factor.
So it was ment to replace ATX

My 3d Mark on my XP CF card it is not a industral one.Not sure how long i will have it on here.The GPU is the only one that works on here.Why does it just stay in black and not do anything at all At least it is working on a CF card. Nut i am not happy with the problems.

It was a lofty idea at the time and really would have needed some time to implement correctly, but they tried to just prybar it into the already established ATX world and it didnt go well. Like @Athlonite said above Dell just made it worse.

A prybar (and perhaps some high explosives) was going to be the only way BTX could've worked. AT was of course ushered in by the PC-AT, and the entire US PC market basically revolved around it by the mid-80s. ATX was a necessary evolution that was itself muscled into acceptance to an extent, but it worked well enough that the transition to BTX was an order of magnitude more difficult. I'm not sure it would have fully caught on even if Intel had stayed behind it.

It wasn't THAT bad. Yes, somethings were annoying and certain others were a pain to deal with, but it was somewhat functional in certain ways.

It was just annoying that you couldn’t just swap in a standard ATX board. If you wanted to upgrade an older dell from say a Pentium 4/D to a Core 2 or newer, you had to source a Dell BTX board that supported it instead of just buying a sweet retail board on Newegg. At least the older Dell Demension 4600 (and similar) used MATX, so you could really make one of those dinky things a super sleeper LOL. Which I really want to do soon

Most OS discs from Dell are without any additional programs/bloat/drivers. So if you can get one, it really is the best way to install XP on a Dell system.

More on this subject. Below are my Dell XP discs. The first is the OS disc which is just a plain-jane Dell branded XP install. The other is the bundled programs disc. I don't have the drivers & utilities disc anymore.

This is what I recommend you look for concerning that Dell system. Ebay is a good place and fairly inexpensive.

XP install stops at this point every time why ? The iso burned with out any errores so why should it stop in the same spot
