Moderation Too Strict

Ain't nuthin' wrong with the mods here, even the ones that I don't like.

I'm on TPU since 2005 and in the past couple of years I noticed the moderation became extreme.

Like in real life discussion, it would be nice sometimes to make a joke, or even a tiny profanity, or even non-specific general insult. Some sense of humor.

But here the moderation over the years became worse even than government officials. Here you automatically get a warning even for bread crumbs.

God forbid if one makes a sexist joke, or post a funny GIF in response to a comment. Oh!!! "Only link or image posted".

@W1zzard

Maybe its time to do changes to the mod team.
No change in moderators' leads to one thing "Closemindedness."

"To the comment of rules being so easily to break they shatter like an eggshell, & one shouldn't break eggshells in the first place."

When you're driving down the road you don't want rules enforced so bad that if you go 1mph over the speed limit you automatically get a ticket, or worse get arrest for reckless driving.

rules should have some bending in them for leeway to make them strong. Not overbearing.

People should be given the chance to edit their comment/s, & it should be told/made known to them what the problem is with the comment/s.

I agree and I like all the mods, but expressing an opinion, without insulting anyone, should be accepted as fair critique sometimes, like I have just taken, absorbed and learned from, , ,, or wtaf was the point of this thread.

Mods aren't Gods , and having respect does not equal never questioning.

Doing so,, always privately, who does that help exactly

Mods always have my respect but I don't always agree with them.

How about mods take ownership so we know who closed a thread or issued warning points? Just a thought.

How would that do anything but create a convenient target for certain peoples outrage?

Ps n finally no mod inserts names on infractions, you never know who to ask what happened.

You should be DM'd with a warning/infraction, most of our system is setup for that. We did has some issues at one point after an upgrade, but I assure you that every warning I send, 0-point and beyond, every post deletion, every reply ban, every edit, I notify or DM. And as a team we try to all uphold that expectation.

If you've had a recent infraction/warning w/o contact, please DM me.

We have no problem taking ownership for handing out warnings and infractions. I believe you and I have had some great discussions in the past, and hope to continue that into the future. :toast:

How about a mod takes ownership so we know who closed a thread?

We often do, at least last I checked? Are we 100% perfect on that, no, admittedly we are not. I know any topic I've closed I have left at least a message that the topic has been closed... is that not taking ownership? Do you expect more than that?

I don't see topics being closed all over without at least public comments, warnings, and a final notice from the moderation team...so when topics are closed it really shouldn't be a surprise. Can we work to improve it? Absolutely, and we're all in agreement that we will do so and make sure it is crystal clear.

But while we asking favors of each other, can some folks work to keep us from having to close threads in the first place? Pro tips located in Rules & Guidelines, link in sig. :toast:

Well, the thought is that people behave badly because they hide behind a pseudonym (mine is Shrek)

I once posted about a puzzle on plier construction
(1) Technology puzzle | TechPowerUp Forums
but it was in the wrong place (my bad); but took warning points for this.

Not complaining, just adding to the discussion here; not trying to criticise anyone.

Lets not forget, any member, since the history of literally forever (even back with vbulletin) can go to there user profile and click on any of there warnings and see who issued it. Some on this thread have even asked that and had it answered before. Crazy how short memory can be. :)

I don't think so...

What did you click on?

I get that message when I click on any of my warnings.

So I can't see what moderator gave me points...

As always, and Im not sure why this is so tough to read from the guidlines, ask a super mod, or when that gets you nowhere, ask W1zzard.

Thank you. This is something we can review and hopefully resolve. But that is not something we directly control, we use the tools, but we don't manage/code/modify the tools, that is up to W1z.

But I do want to cast out there, anyone assuming that the moderation team was blocking your access while infracting you would be a case of perceptions gone wrong that can make things worse here. We don't know what we don't know, and not having access to your own warning/infraction list is a problem, you all should see what you have earned, how many points, when they expire, etc.

I hope we can get this resolved soon and appreciate some of you speaking up about this.

Exactly. Everyone here is worth responding to a question, and if people DM me I try my best to get back to them, between a busy career and family life, I spend a lot of extra personal time trying to support TPU both publicly and privately. I feel the rest of the team does a commendable job as well.

But if folks don't or won't communicate with us, we can't fix it, and we can't fix everything anyways...but that doesn't mean we can't try or at least have a discussion and go from there.

As-far-as contact, you can ask the mods listed for each section, super mods have access to all sections, but those roles also come with limits that sometimes require escalation and W1z has admin access to every thing and then some.

Yeeaahh I had to check my warnings and that isn't working on showing who did what. I know who did my warnings but doesn't change anything when the mod was enforcing the rules. Like what am I gonna do? Throw pie at them?

Some people apparently send them death threats. Which is about as low as it gets on the internet, and also probably the most stupid thing possible to do. I rather hope such people get permanent vacations.

So if a mod enforces the rules that were broken, and you feel you need to make your case, I feel this part of the guidelines helps cover that?

Or if a DM is started with the mod, can you not initiate a discussion? Otherwise, if you were in the wrong, what else is there to say? I guess maybe I'm missing part of the point maybe? Please correct me where I'm wrong.

It is amazing to what extents people will say things when they're being held accountable online. I wish death threats or threats in general towards us weren't as common as they are, but the "online tough guy" mentality is a thing when there's an alias. I agree, not a wise thing to do, and some folks may be shown the exit without permission to return.

No problem! Tell ya what, we'll make it a part of your sign-on bonus! Up to 5 death threats in your first 90-days. ;)

The places I could see a topic like Internet Tough Guy going in the Lounge... oh boy. Nightmare fuel. lol!

And just to add:

We also know where you live :)

Question: Am I the only one who likes to look up recent posts by "deleted user #xxxx" to see why they self-destructed?

Thank you for volunteering to moderate the next brawl in the mod's lounge.....:nutkick:
Speaking of that, all the guys do is strictly volunteer based and if there is any kind of pay that's between them, W1zz and the wall as far as I'm concerned.

You can visit. Actually I know a few mods live near me. My cats are friendly I swear.

I've suggested mods take alternative avatars before, obfuscation of persona.

IMHO if you're that angry you should time out yourself.

Important thought some are less eloquent, perhaps your taking things too harsh or too personally.

I think they're is too much of that especially if Pal gets you points:p

I'm not your buddy friend, we're All bro's ,wiggly hairs on a donut yo

Science.
