Hello! I missed you guys! I have a router question. I had a crappy Zytel router I was renting from Altafiber and I saw this router on sale so I bought it. Here it is https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-wifi-routers/rt-ax3000/. Was wondering if it’s a decent router for $150.00 or would I notice a difference taking it back and for $30.00 dollars getting this other router. https://www.asus.com/us/networking-iot-servers/wifi-routers/asus-gaming-routers/rt-ax82u/ it’s on sale for $179.00. If you have anyother options let me know. The current ASUS router I have is much better than what I had, and I have a pretty small house less than 2000 square feet. Using 800Mpbs fiber connection. Looking to spend less than $200.

Thanks in advance for any impute.

Going from the Zytel to your to the AX3000 should provide you with a significant performance boost. Going from the X3000 to the AX5400 will get you distracting, but pretty lights.

So you think it’s not that big of an upgrade then. Thanks for your help! I never was a networking guy. This forum has been a great part of my life. The money it has saved me and the friends I have made over the years have been great. I can always count on Wizard and the boys.

Most likely the bandwidth your Internet provider is providing will be your limiting factor.

Seems to be using its max potential. Plus the version Is ASUS RT- AX 3000 version V.2 . So it’s updated with faster quad core processors I believe than what I posted.

You would have to be connected with fiber and most likely getting your ISPs fastest fiber service to take full advantage of 802.11ax, 5GHz band and 2402Mbps. And if that is the case, then I envy you!

How many users/devices? What speed are you getting from the ax3000 of that 800down. Does your PC support wifi6? The main benefit from the ax82u would be multiple users at the same time but the better option would be keep ax3000 and look at getting 2nd ax3000 in the future to run in aimesh mode if you need better coverage and more consistent speeds around the whole house. How many floors is your house? I personally have ax88u and ax86u in wired aimesh mode and with msi z490 unify which has wifi 6 it gives me same results as wired.

I have about 25 devices attached to my network two of the fire cubes in my house have Wi-Fi 6 and my Ipad Pro has Wi-Fi 6 two new MacBook airs I believe have Wi-Fi six , and we have three iPhone 15s which have wi-Fi 6. All the rest of the devices are TVs and the usual stuff. And yes, it is connected to fiber optic. I have a bilevel style home that’s around 1300 ft.² of living space. I believe the Ax 3000 has a quad core processor running at 1.7 GHz and Ax 5400 has a quad core running at 1.5 GHz. I don’t know how that figures into this.I believe both support Aimesh

Update took the Ax3000V.2 back and bought a

Asus RT-AX86U Pro router for $50.00 more . What is the green port for I'm A bit confused. The box is lacking a bunch of documentation explaining how it can be used and configured. Is there any real benefit?

Yo, welcome back. It looks like the green port is 2.5gGbps port. Not sure if it is strictly WAN, or can get configured as LAN port

As pointed out, that's a 2.5 Gbps port which you can configure to either be the WAN port, or a LAN port.
It's mostly useless though. since you're limited to one device at that speed.

That said, you did the right thing, the RT-AX86U Pro is a good piece of kit and based on the amount of devices you have, it'll be a vastly superior router to the first one you got.
One big advantage is that you'll be able to make proper use of MU-MIMO, since most client devices are either 1x1 or 2x2, which means at least two devices should be able to utilise each frequency band properly without interfering with the other when you're saying downloading something on one device and streaming something on the other.

Also note that Merlin offers a third party firmware for that model which adds some extra features and security fixes, if that's something that tickles your fancy. Note that it has the same UI and won't void the warranty. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

Thanks for the info. I did not realize just how bad the old rental router was. This new one is crazy good. Everything in my home just works better. The other router AX3000 V.2 was good believe it or not. It is a new update version of the Ax3000 with a quad at 1.7GHz up from a Tricore at 1.5GHz. What is crazy is the Ax3000 claims to have better range than the new Pro does. I do not think it does and the Pro just seem better than its smaller brother. The Ax3000 was super small but surprisingly powerful. But I am glad I took it back because this new Pro router is great.

Thanks to everyone here for the comments. I have counted on this forum for about 17+ years for help. I can always count on you guys!

Again thanks to you all!
