The Lexar NM790 enjoys immense popularity, thanks to its competitive pricing and exceptional performance. Now, there's an additional variant equipped with a heatsink. Our review's thermal tests confirm its excellent performance—no thermal throttling, even under heavy loads.

Hi,
Best items I got pre black friday beside a laptop was 2-sn850x 4tb for 230.us a pop
To bad WD didn't offer a heatsink model for you to test.

In this laptop on the acer stock m.2 as well maxed at 64c and again on my z490 rig
Not bad for a couple cheap 8.us per heatsinks especially in a laptop :rockout:

@W1zzard: You should probably add the fact that it is a single-sided 4TB drive as in the "Pro" column since a lot of laptops can't be upgraded with double-sided M.2 drives (and update the original NM790 review as well). Although most laptops buyers should probably stick to the SKU without the heatsink and use thermal pads if needed.

Personally, I'd like to see a double-sided 8TB version of that drive as soon as possible. Got one 4TB and a couple of 2TBs of the NM790 already and they are really great for game- and asset-libraries, especially since they cost basically the same as TLC SATA drives of the same size where I live.

Given the arrangement of the fans, is there any airflow at all over the SSDs?

Seems SSD pricing shot way up over the last few days. Just bought an FX900 4TB for $200 last week and now it's $250. I don't think the NM790 is worth anywhere near $280, the non-heatsink version was $200 after thanksgiving. You can still get a MP34 4TB SSD off newegg right now for $151 making it a great deal for a decent performing TLC drive. There's also the Silicon Power US75 4TB TLC drive for $209. Not as good value as the MP34 but for those that want most of the performance it's an option. It also carries a 5 year warranty. For the vast majority of people, you will not be able to tell the dfiference btween the MP34 / US75 and the NM790. Current pricing ($280) doesn't really make sense, you are paying a lot of money for a gain in performance that'll only be noticeable in certain tasks and in benchmarks. For those people, I don't see a reason why you wouldn't just get a PCIe 5.0 drive like the T700. At $280 the NM790 is almost twice the cost of mid-ranged SSDs, it's far into the arena of dimminishing returns.

Hi,
No holes on the bottom cover where the m.2s are located but there are some between and below
Red boxes show where air gets pulled in.

Is the 2TB heatsink smaller? As I am curious why the heatsink costs more on the 4TB model vs the 2TB.

The higher mass of the cooler alone give SOME extra cooling.
Hi,
Without the heatsinks I added the m.2s both were pretty bad
So, not to much going on air flow wise on them.
Acer stock m.2 is right next to the cooling pipe so it's max before adding the heatsink was about 4-5c cooler that the other.

Wild thing is what these manufacture want just for their basic heatsinks installed lol
Save money buy your own install it knowing even a 7-8.us is as good or better than theirs are

it's great to see 4 TB SSDs getting sort of affordable without using QLC.
Yeah just opt for the naked ones

After reading the article, I decided to order one. It's currently on sale in My region for $205, compared to $195 for "bare" version. With 4TB KC3000 settling in at over $300 for the last 6months, and no discounts in sight, nm790 is no brainer.

Seems all the preemptive Black Friday deals are gone. Glad I got my 4TB m.2 when I did at $330 CAD, it's now $460 CAD.

in chinese forums, chiphell mydrivers etc, this brand of controller do not hold long term stability it seems.
it is worse than your already poor phison controllers.

I wonder why it does not go in proportion to the capacity.

1TB version uses 2 NAND flash chips that seem to be different (slightly worse?) than the 2TB and 4TB model, who each have 2 and 4 chips respectively.

I purchased this SSD recently but it seems to be underperforming as per the picture above. The advertised speeds are 7400/6500. - There is no operating system installed on it and I also tried these tests when the drive was empty with similar results. Temperatures max out at 72°C.

For reference my Kingston KC3000 2TB in the same M.2 slot advertised with 7000/7000, achieves 7330/7050, even when running the operaitng system.

Would you consider this an acceptable difference from advertised speeds? (around 860/1145 MB/s below)
