It will be running at close to 50% load so that's good for efficiency.

In my usual quest to get more performance using trailing edge hardware spending as little as possible, I have upgraded my previous iteration of cheap hardware from a Haswell Xeon 4c/8t system to an X99 system using a Broadwell-EP 6c/12t CPU as Cyberpunk 2077/Phantom Liberty really needs more threads! I picked up a Lenovo Orion motherboard for apx $35, a Xeon E5-1650 v4 CPU for apx $16, and 16GB (4GB x 4) of 2400MHz DDR4 ECC memory for apx $15 and ended up having to ditch my old CoolerMaster Elite 342 case for a spare Rosewill FBM-01 I've had sitting around. The reason for this, is unlike my last Lenovo M93 motherboard, this new one has an odd protrusion at the top of the board that actually hit the top mounted power supply in the CoolerMaster case. Since the Rosewill case has more room between the motherboard and the power supply, the oddly shaped Orion motherboard fits without hitting the power supply.

Let me tell you, moving my components into this ancient design case and making it look OK with good airflow was a chore, and is pretty much the equivalent of the old saying about stuffing 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag LOL. But I managed to jam everything in there hiding most of the modular cabling below my optical drive and cooling performance is quite decent. I feel we are in the golden era of cheap but powerful hardware no doubt - I have literally less then $70 in this whole upgrade!

Funny thing is my retro system is also in a Rosewill FBM-01, so my desk looks pretty good with monitor in the middle and two matched machines on either side.

It's been thoroughly abused and it's extremely slow compared to my not-so-nouveau m.2 NVMe SSD. Yet it works. And yes, I just installed Win10 there and tortured this whole system (i3-6100 + H110M + 16 GB dual channel DDR4-2133 + RX 480) by playing Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p + FSR Performance.

Not enjoyable, sluggish, stutterish, yet playable.

1st arrivale :
the fit is a bit fiddly (the plug is too long) but it does not affect stability once on desk ...


at least now, no cable "sprouting" from the side of the screen and more conventient for landscape mode

received the ibroz dock for the ally ... resold it at retail price, it was at least 5 time too expensive (well, that's what i get for ordering locally to avoid a few weeks wait ... it did look nice but mostly made of plastic a bit too big for my liking, also featuring a door on the bottom, hidden under a thick sticker with the most bog basic spec list i ever saw, aka: the type of device, "4K/60Hz dock", and model number, shaped like it would be for a M.2 NVMe 2280 slot ... buuuuttttt : nope and shipped in a box with the same, more or less, volume as the ally box, due to the support arch being non removable)
if it did had the M.2 NVMe slot, the price would have been ... well with a 50% discount maybe... ok

ordered a more generic dock (but mostly made of metal) for a 6th of the ibroz price (still waiting on it but that's fine)

Let's be fair, I didn't say it was on-par with an SSD. I said it was still usable. Windows/Linux needs a surprisingly low level of data bandwidth to be acceptably fast. That WD Black, after fresh formatting and partitioning would provide more than enough data bandwidth for an OS to run well.

I don't care what anyone says, that performance is enough to still be usable and viable for any older/retro system. Windows 10 is still perfectly happy to run on a 2.5" 5400rpm drive so a WD Black is fine. Not optimal, but usable.

I could just use a 24-12 V step down buck converter but eh.
