Hi,

Helped my friend to build budget gaming PC. He installed windows yesterday, everything is working. Except second nvme drive is not visible in bios nor in windows. He installed newest chipset drivers and I updated newest bios a few weeks back.

Are there some settings in bios that he must change? I told him to swap drives to see if the other drive is DOA. I'm still waiting for the result.

MB: Asus Prime X470 Pro
CPU: Ryzen 5700X
Nvme1: Kingston fury renegade 1Tb (near CPU, working)
Nvme2: WD black sn850x 2Tb (not working)

I hope OP has read the manual for the second M.2._2.

AMD X470 Chipset:
- M.2_2 socket 3* with M Key, Type 2242/ 2260/ 2280 (PCIe 3.0 x2 mode
and SATA mode) storage devices support
- 6 x Serial ATA 6 Gb/s connectors with RAID 0, RAID 1 and RAID 10
support
* The M.2_2 socket shares PCIe clock with PCIe x1_1. When PCIe x1_1 or PCIe
x1_3 is occupied, the M.2_2 socket can only support SATA mode.
**Supports PCIe RAID conſgurations via onboard M.2 storages

Another note I have tried on AM4 a couple of times where I cannot see a M.2. device I would take off the heatsink and just re-seat the M.2. and than it would normally work, have you tried this @Hattu ?

can you see it in disk management?
It's not visible anywhere.

I'm aware about it's limitations. Only 2x pcie3 lanes available. And there are no other cards in pcie-slots, only rtx2070.

It's my son's old motherboard and he has used both slots, so they should work.

Or have I misunderstood something?

Nope it should work, try to take the ssd out of the m.2. slot and put it back in, as from my experience I had this where some AM4 boards specially Asus would fint it this was on B550 and X570 boards I had.

Simplest check, swap the SSDs and see if the SN850X shows up. If it does then the problem is likely that it doesn't like PCIe 3.0 and/or only 2 lanes of it (basically you're running the drive at PCIe 4.0 x1).

Personally I'd buy a PCIe-to-M.2 adapter and drop it in the second PCIe x16 slot. That will at least give the drive you plug in there, 4 lanes of PCIe versus only the 2 it would get from the 2nd M.2 slot. Sure the primary (GPU) slot will only run at x8, but that's way less of a problem IMO.

My friend went to his home brewery to come down and make some ale.

He then swapped the drives later yesterday evening and now they are both working.

Maybe there was contact issue or something was incompatible.

He may buy adapter for the second drive. Or not. Newer MB may be an option too, but the whole idea was to build budget system, mainly for light gaming and some work.

Thanks everyone. :rockout:

Too much "ale" can contribute to this kind of hw issues, its a common know issue among the communities... seems there's a "lack" of connection :banghead::roll::banghead:
